By now it has become an annual tradition, a symbol of the LGBTQ movement and a celebration of Pride. Today, Starbucks raised its Pride Flag high above its headquarters at the Starbucks Support Center, as it has <a href="https://stories.starbucks.com/stories/2014/for-the-first-time-starbucks-raises-the-pride-flag-atop-its-headquarters/">each June since 2014</a>. At 19 by 38 feet, the rainbow banner is larger than the average Seattle apartment, and among the largest ever made to recognize lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer inclusion.

Starbucks’ support for the LGBTQ community <a href="https://stories.starbucks.com/stories/2019/starbucks-pride-a-long-legacy-of-lgbtq-inclusion/">goes back decades</a>, offering health benefits for same-sex domestic partners of part- and full-time employees since 1998. More than 10 years ago, Starbucks established Workplace Gender Transition Guidelines to support transgender partners and added coverage of gender reassignment surgery to the company’s health benefits in 2013, and <a href="https://stories.starbucks.com/stories/2018/they-are-lifesaving-starbucks-offers-expanded-benefits-for-trans-people/">expanded benefits in 2018</a>. The company has also spoken out in <a href="https://news.starbucks.com/news/starbucks-applauds-supreme-courts-ruling-on-marriage-equality">support of marriage equality</a>, helped create <a href="https://news.starbucks.com/news/safe-place-program-at-starbucks">safe spaces</a> for victims of anti-LGBTQ-related crimes and harassment, and <a href="https://news.starbucks.com/views/starbucks-commitment-to-inclusion">urged equal treatment for the LGBTQ community.</a>

Starbucks partners have been powerful advocates for the LGBTQ community both inside and outside the company from the beginning. The <a href="https://www.facebook.com/StarbucksPride/">Starbucks Pride Alliance Network</a>, which held its first informal meeting in 1996, now includes thousands of partners in chapters around the world.

Williams underscored the company’s commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion as a core part of its mission and values. “There’s never been a more important time for all of us to stand together however we self-identify. We’re all in this together,” she said.

Once upon a time, s’mores were a humble dessert. The original recipe was from a scouting magazine in the 1920s, calling for a toasted marshmallow sandwiched between pieces of chocolate and two graham crackers. 

But now s’mores aren’t just for campfires anymore. 

You can roast your own tableside in high-end restaurants, sidle up to a s’mores bar at a wedding reception, or order them to-go at a neighborhood food truck. They have inspired such culinary creations as s’mores grilled cheese sandwiches, muffins and pizza – even a s’mores burrito. There’s something nostalgic in that combination of melted chocolate, roasted marshmallow and crunchy graham crackers that makes it <a href="https://imbibeinc.com/food-and-beverage-industry-media/blog-postings-from-the-drink-tank/trendspotting-2019-trends">one of the top beverage trends for 2019</a>.

Now Starbucks <a href="https://www.starbucks.com/menu/drinks/frappuccino-blended-beverages/s-mores-frappuccino">S’mores Frappuccino®</a> blended coffee <a href="https://stories.starbucks.com/stories/2019/smores-frappuccino-blended-beverage-will-return-to-starbucks-next-week/">is back in Starbucks stores</a> in the United States and Canada starting today (April 30) for a limited time, while supplies last (along with <a href="https://www.starbucks.com/menu/drinks/frappuccino-blended-beverages/mocha-cookie-crumble-frappuccino-blended-coffee">Mocha Cookie Crumble Frappuccino</a> and <a href="https://www.starbucks.com/menu/drinks/frappuccino-blended-beverages/caramel-ribbon-crunch-frappuccino-blended-beverage">Caramel Ribbon Crunch Frappuccino</a>).

It was those memories of summertime that first sparked the idea for the beverage, which was first introduced in 2015. Paloma Carrington-Bataller, manager of product development for Starbucks, wasn’t yet on the R&amp;D team but knows its origin story well.

“When we start creating a new beverage, we always try to think about our customer. What they are doing? How do they want to be feeling? What is their mindset? All those things go into every beverage we make,” she said.

The R&amp;D partners started with the idea of summers in the outdoors and spending time with friends and family. That led to the concept of roasting s’mores around a campfire. They came up with a Frappuccino recipe that’s a deconstructed version of the fireside classic with milk chocolate sauce, a creamy blend of vanilla, coffee, milk and ice that’s finished off with marshmallowy whipped cream and a graham cracker crumble. 

“Customers loved it,” Carrington-Bataller said. “There’s something about that first sip of marshmallow whip and the rich texture of our amazing milk chocolate sauce. It takes you right back to memories of summer camp or gathering around a bonfire with friends.”

The Frappuccino was a customer-favorite for three summers before <a href="https://stories.starbucks.com/stories/2019/smores-frappuccino-blended-beverage-will-return-to-starbucks-next-week/">taking a hiatus</a> in 2018 and had a passionate fan base like <a href="https://stories.starbucks.com/press/2018/fall-arrives-at-starbucks-with-return-of-psl/">Pumpkin Spice Latte</a>. Customers didn’t take it well.

“My friends know I work at Starbucks and I got phone calls from them, asking why it wasn’t in stores,” she said. “People were upset!” 

Now that S’mores Frappuccino is back on the menu at Starbucks this summer by popular demand, she gets to enjoy hearing from friends about their favorite drink again. 

“I think one of the reasons people love s’mores so much is that they aren’t something you make for only yourself,” she said. “It’s something that’s shared with others.”

Twenty-five years ago this spring, more than a million people were killed in the Rwanda genocide against the Tutsi. But the seeds of division between Hutus and Tutsis, the country’s two largest ethnic groups, can be traced back decades<a href="https://rwandaembassy.org/about-rwanda">. In 1919, Belgian colonists</a> arrived in Rwanda and created ID cards identifying people by their ethnicities. The colonists considered Tutsis, who traditionally were cattle herders, to be above Hutus, who were known as farmers, and provided the Tutsis with more economic opportunities. In 1959, during a Hutu revolt against the colonial rule, thousands of Tutsis were killed. After Rwanda became independent from Belgium in 1962, Hutus took power. <a href="http://www.un.org/en/preventgenocide/rwanda/education/rwandagenocide.shtml">As years went on</a>, some Tutsis who had fled to Uganda formed the Rwandan Patriotic Front, led by a man named Paul Kagame.

April 6, 1994 President Juvenal Habyarimana is killed

Rwandan President Juvenal Habyarimana, a Hutu, is in a plane that is shot down the night of April 6, 1994. Hutus blame the Tutsi. Tutsis say it was Hutus looking for a reason to trigger what came next. To this day, the true cause of the crash <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-46687492">isn’t entirely clear.</a>

After Habyarimana’s plane goes down, calls go out over government-sponsored radio stations for Hutus to kill “the cockroaches,” or Tutsis. 

April 7, 1994 to July 1994 100 days of bloodshed, 1 million killed

Over the course of 100 days, a million Tutsis and moderate Hutus who opposed the genocide, are killed. Neighbor rises up against neighbor as the Hutus, the country’s largest ethnic group, attack Tutsis. 

The Rwandan Patriotic Front, led by Paul Kagame, defeats the extremist Hutu forces and ends the genocide. Pasteur Bizimungu becomes president of Rwanda. 

Rwanda's first genocide trial opens at the International Criminal Tribunal for those accused of participating in the genocide. Due to the high number of those accused, community courts, called <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-18490348">gacaca,</a> are later formed across Rwanda.

Umuganda, where communities and neighbors come together once a month to work on a community project <a href="http://www.rgb.rw/index.php?id=37">is re-introduced in Rwanda</a> to encourage unity. On the last Saturday of the month, continuing to present day, all able-bodied people between the ages of 18-65 are required to spend three hours working together on a project.

Hutu President Pasteur Bizimungu resigns after falling out with members of his Tutsi-dominated ruling party. Vice President Paul Kagame is elected president by members of parliament and ministers.

That same year, Kagame announces Vision 2020, a framework to help reduce poverty by focusing on specific goals, including agricultural transformation.

Starbucks launches <a href="https://www.starbucks.com/responsibility/community/farmer-support/social-development-investments">Global Farmer Fund, </a>and begins providing access to credit for coffee farmers at reasonable terms. This soon evolves into a commitment to provide $50 million to coffee communities around the world by 2020. Rwanda goes on to become one of the countries to receive funds.

The United States Agency for International Development begins investing in coffee’s infrastructure in Rwanda<a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2006/08/06/business/yourmoney/06coffee.html">, providing financing for co-ops</a> to build washing stations, provide training and more.

2004 Abakundakawa coffee cooperative forms; genocide memorial opens

The Abakundakawa Cooperative, comprised of men and women in the Rushashi area who grow coffee, is formed. In the years to come, Starbucks develops a relationship with the cooperative.

Also in 2004, the <a href="https://www.kgm.rw/">Kigali Genocide Memorial</a> opens, featuring photos of those killed and special exhibits. Today, it serves as the final resting ground for the remains of 250,000 people killed in the genocide.

2008 Hingakawa women's coffee co-op opens

A group of women from Abakundakawa form their own, women-led cooperative called Hingakawa. It begins with 160 women, each required to have at least 100 coffee trees. It is comprised of women whose husbands had been killed during the genocide and those whose husbands participated in the killings. In addition to helping provide an income to women, it also provides a way for them to connect across past divisions to find common ground. In the years to come, Starbucks will develop a relationship with Hingakawa.

The <a href="https://www.starbucks.com/responsibility/community/starbucks-foundation">Starbucks Foundation</a> awards a 3-year, $1 million grant to <a href="https://stories.starbucks.com/stories/2008/starbucks-foundation-awards-us2-million-from-the-ethos-water-fund-to-help-i/">CARE</a> to support water, sanitation and hygiene education programs for coffee communities in Rwanda.

2009 Starbucks Farmer Support Center comes to Rwanda

Starbucks opens a <a href="https://www.starbucks.com/responsibility/community/farmer-support/farmer-support-centers">Farmer Support Center</a> in Kigali, Rwanda, where agronomists working one-on-one with farmers in the field help improve the quality and profitability of their crops, as well as support co-ops and suppliers.

Rwanda officially closes its gacaca courts, which had tried 2 million people accused of crimes during the genocide. About 65 percent of them were found guilty. 

Inspired by a Starbucks partner’s visit to Rwanda, <a href="https://stories.starbucks.com/stories/2016/uk-starbucks-stores-help-farmers/">Starbucks stores in the UK begin an annual Coffee + Cows campaign to raise money for Send a Cow</a>, which provides training, tools, seeds and livestock to farmers in Rwanda.

2016 Rwanda joins Sustainable Coffee Challenge

Rwanda becomes one of the first countries to join the <a href="https://www.conservation.org/stories/sustainable-coffee-challenge/Pages/overview.aspx">Sustainable Coffee Challenge</a> – a global collaborative effort by Conservation International and Starbucks aimed at making coffee the world's first sustainable agricultural product.

Starbucks offers Hingakawa Reserve coffee in the U.S. for the first time. 

2018 Grants to support empowerment of women and girls

The Starbucks Foundation announces a <a href="https://stories.starbucks.com/press/2018/starbucks-partners-with-malala-fund-to-invest-in-women/">new goal of empowering 250,000 women and girls</a> in coffee, tea and cocoa growing communities by 2025. Three grants made to <a href="https://stories.starbucks.com/stories/2019/the-starbucks-foundations-origin-grants-to-empower-women-and-girls/">Days for Girls, Send a Cow, and World Relief</a> totaling more than $1 million will support programs around women’s leadership, access to finance, and healthy homes in Rwanda.

Hingakawa coffee to be sold in the summer of 2019 at select Starbucks stores in the Asia Pacific and Latin American markets.

The Starbucks Passport Series will include Starbucks Blonde Roast Rwanda coffee in U.S. Starbucks stores over the summer.

Commemorations will be held <a href="https://en.unesco.org/events/commemoration-25th-anniversary-1994-genocide-against-tutsi-rwanda">around the world</a> in April, marking <a href="https://genocidesurvivorsfoundation.org/25th-anniversary-commemoration-events-in-april/">the 25th anniversary</a> of the genocide.

Seattle (Mar. 20, 2019) – Starbucks Corporation (NASDAQ: SBUX) today announced its pioneering investment in the new Valor Siren Ventures I L.P. (VSV), which will serve as a growth driver for the next generation of food and retail start-up technology companies. Managed by Valor Equity Partners, a leading growth-focused private equity investment firm that was among the first investors in food technology, the new fund will identify and invest in companies that are developing technologies, products, and solutions relating to food or retail. These verticals are increasingly relevant to Starbucks as it seeks to support its world-class talent with an innovation agenda accelerated by external relationships.

The Starbucks $100 million cornerstone commitment to VSV is the first of its kind for the company, and the new fund will seek to raise an additional $300 million in the coming months from other strategic partners and key institutional investors. TOKYO – After announcing the opening of the Tokyo Roastery almost three years ago, partners at the Tokyo Roastery are ready to showcase their craft.

Later this week, the doors to the Roastery will open along the Meguro River’s edge, just weeks before the famous cherry blossoms reach full bloom. The four-story tribute to coffee, craft and community celebrates Japanese tradition through the passion of the partners that work there.

Just in time for Valentine's Day, here's a taste of chocolate at Starbucks
