On Dec. 1, in recognition of Giving Tuesday and World AIDS Day, The Starbucks Foundation will donate $500,000 to the Global Fund to help fight AIDS with (RED).

The donation will support the Global Fund’s COVID-19 Response, which aims to strengthen health systems and mitigate the impact of COVID-19 on AIDS programs. These funds will help protect the extraordinary gains the global health community has made in the fight against AIDS and ensure continued access to life-saving treatment and services.

&nbsp;This donation builds on Starbucks prior efforts to support the global fight against AIDS. Since Starbucks partnership with (RED) began in 2008, Starbucks has generated more than $16 million in donations to help fight AIDS.

As the people of Lebanon start to rebuild following the catastrophic explosions in Beirut Port this month, The Starbucks Foundation and Alshaya Group have committed matching donations of $100,000 each to support disaster relief and rebuilding efforts on the ground.

The funding will be distributed to a number of organizations with the goal of giving immediate relief and supporting the city’s recovery, with a specific emphasis on food and shelter.

The Starbucks Foundation will immediately donate $75,000 to CARE International who are working to provide shelter and other immediate assistance to homeless families, and $25,000 to World Central Kitchen who are serving more than 10,000 meals daily to people at local hospitals, seniors isolated at home, first responders, volunteers and community organizations.

Reflecting its strong links with the local community, Alshaya Group will donate $100,000 to the Lebanon-based aid organization, Offre Joie, who are providing shelter to displaced families and organizing volunteers to clean up and rehabilitate homes. 

“Our thoughts are with the people of Lebanon who have been impacted, as well as all of the emergency personnel who have responded to this tragic event,” said Duncan Moir, President, Starbucks Europe, Middle East and Africa. “While this donation will help with the recovery it’s our partners (employees) who are responding with humanity and empathy and we are very proud of how they are serving their communities, every day.”

Alshaya Group has partnered with Starbucks since 1999 to operate the brand across the Middle East and currently has over 40 Starbucks locations in Lebanon. SEATTLE – As part of ongoing efforts to support communities around the world amid the unprecedented impact of COVID-19, today The Starbucks Foundation announced it is donating more than $3 million to support community response efforts globally.

On a global scale, The Starbucks Foundation will contribute $1 million to the COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund in support of the World Health Organization (WHO), powered by the United Nations. The fund strengthens WHO’s efforts to track and understand the spread of the virus, help patients get the care they need and workers get essential supplies and information, and accelerates the development of vaccines, tests and treatments<a>. </a>

“Diseases don’t respect borders, and I am so grateful to The Starbucks Foundation, one of my home state’s great innovators, for helping fight this pandemic both locally and globally,” said Elizabeth Cousens, President and CEO of the UN Foundation. “This historic fund marks the first time everyone can help the World Health Organization’s lifesaving work supporting all countries to prevent, detect and respond to COVID-19, especially where needs are greatest.”

In China, where early signs of recovery from COVID-19 are showing, The Starbucks Foundation will contribute $1 million to Give2Asia to fund a project focused on supporting front-line medical workers, and strengthening grassroots capabilities to safeguard the future of local communities. The donation will help provide training to doctors in less developed areas on the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of coronavirus and other respiratory diseases; educate local communities on disease prevention; and offer free counseling to healthcare workers psychologically impacted by COVID-19.

The donation follows&nbsp;Starbucks China RMB&nbsp;3 million donation to the China Red Cross Foundation. This donation was issued in the early days of the COVID-19 outbreak in China to help provide essential supplies and to protect and support the medical personnel working tirelessly at the front line in Hubei province.

Supporting Vulnerable Communities in the U.S. and Canada 

Beginning with local nonprofit partners in Starbucks home of Seattle, The Starbucks Foundation has donated $250,000 – with a focus on helping unsheltered families and vulnerable populations in shelters prepare and stay safe. These donations to Mary’s Place, Wellspring Family Services, United Way of King County, Catholic Community Services and FareStart<a> </a>are helping support preparedness and stabilization of families and individuals in shelter, and ensure continued service delivery, especially as needs of the most vulnerable increase.

“We are in uncharted territory, learning together how we can best keep our families and loved ones safe and healthy. We are so thankful for our partners at The Starbucks Foundation who have come alongside us and more than 600 moms, dads and children who are staying in our shelter communities, to help bridge the gap and make sure we have what we need to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 virus,” said Marty Hartman, Executive Director, Mary’s Place. “This critical funding will help with unforeseen expenses for medical and cleaning supplies, additional staff and overtime to help care for more than 300 children in shelter who no longer have school to go to each day, and curb the threat of the virus by helping more families move out of shelter and into housing.” 

This support is in addition to The Starbucks Foundation’s $250,000 donation in early March to help launch the COVID-19 Response Fund hosted by Seattle Foundation.

In New York City, where the virus has the highest rate of community spread, The Starbucks Foundation is contributing $250,000 to Robin Hood’s COVID Response Fund, which supports nonprofit organizations on the front lines in providing emergency support to New Yorkers. Another $50,000 donation will enable United Way of New York City to provide food, learning and other resources to communities disproportionately affected by the economic consequences of the crisis. The Starbucks Foundation is also contributing $25,000 to the New York City Police Foundation to purchase supplies that NYPD officers need to keep themselves safe, and $25,000 to the Food Bank for New York City to ensure New York residents in need continue to have access to meals during times of crisis.

Nationally, The Starbucks Foundation supported United Way Worldwide’s COVID-19 Community Response and Recovery Fund with a $250,000 donation to help the most vulnerable populations across the U.S. receive critical financial and social service support.

“The United Way network is responding in communities around the world to the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Suzanne McCormick, U.S. President of United Way Worldwide. “We are grateful that The Starbucks Foundation has joined us in our response. This generous donation to the United Way COVID-19 Community Response and Recovery Fund and to United Way of New York, will allow us to continue to support local communities as we grapple with this massive health and economic crisis.”

In Canada, The Starbucks Foundation is supporting vulnerable communities and front-line health care workers with a $100,000 CAD donation to United Way Centraide Canada’s COVID-19 Community Response and Recovery Fund and a $100,000 CAD donation to support hospital foundations across the country.

In addition to these donations, last week Starbucks announced it will give a free tall brewed coffee to front-line responders to the COVID-19 outbreak through May 3. This commitment was accompanied by a $500,000 donation from The Starbucks Foundation to support U.S. front-line responders with equal donations to&nbsp;Direct Relief to support the delivery of personal protective equipment and essential medical items and to Operation Gratitude to deliver 50,000 care packages and handwritten letters to first responders and health care workers.

Women have the potential to empower and transform lives in coffee- and tea-growing communities. 

Since International Women’s Day 2018, The Starbucks Foundation has been working toward a <a href="https://stories.starbucks.com/press/2018/starbucks-partners-with-malala-fund-to-invest-in-women/">goal to empower 250,000 women and girls in origin communities by 2025</a>. This effort has <a href="https://stories.starbucks.com/stories/2019/the-starbucks-foundations-origin-grants-to-empower-women-and-girls/">already made a difference</a> in the lives of more than 66,000 women through programs around women’s leadership, access to finance, and healthy homes in coffee- and tea-growing communities across Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Over the past year, The Starbucks Foundation has awarded additional Origin Grants to help continue to break down barriers to education, promote clean water and sanitation (WASH), and create economic opportunities for women and girls. This brings the total number of foundation grantees working in coffee and tea-growing communities to 18, with grants totaling more than $5 million.

Days for Girls | Kenya, 2020 – 2022

To empower 15,000 women and girls in Kenya’s tea communities through sustainable menstrual kits, health education, and social enterprises that shatter stigmas and create dignity and opportunity. The program will promote menstrual hygiene awareness, increased access to supplies, local advocates, and income generating opportunities for women and girls.

Girl Rising | India, 2019 – 2020

To create a new curriculum focused on changing gender norms and building skills for women and girls from tea estates in Assam, India. In partnership with Barefoot College, the program will equip teachers and strengthen the self-confidence, leadership and life skills of 1,500 adolescent girls from tea estates.

Grounds for Health | Ethiopia, 2020 – 2022

To improve access to life saving health screening services in coffee communities in Ethiopia to reach and break barriers for more than 30,000 women. Through expansion of health centers, delivery of health screening equipment and skill building for local health workers, the program will help early detection and treatment of cervical cancer in coffee-producing communities.

Instituto del Café de Costa Rica (ICAFE) | Costa Rica, 2019 – 2022

To support safe places for children of migrant coffee pickers to stay during the day with nutritional resources and educational games and tools that promote improved hygiene and well-being at Casas de la Alegria. ICAFE and local partners will offer Health Week programming that will serve over 800 girls and boys who are three years old and above, teaching and encouraging them to adopt health and hygiene behaviors.&nbsp;

Malala Fund | Brazil and Ethiopia, 2020 – 2021

To invest in and partner with local education leaders and innovators working to advance girls' education in Ethiopia and Brazil. Support will help advocates in creating girl-friendly school environments in Ethiopia and improving resources, girls’ access to education and retention in school in Brazil.

Mercy Corps | India, 2020 – 2022

To improve the living conditions of tea-growing communities in Assam, India through improved clean water and circular sanitation solutions including infrastructure, education and behavior change. This pilot program will create a scalable sanitation model while providing access to sanitation infrastructure and water supply for 300 households and training more than 3,800 women and their families in sanitation and hygiene practices. 

Village Enterprise | Kenya, 2020 – 2022

To equip more than 2,000 women in tea growing regions of Kenya with the knowledge, tools and mentorship to start sustainable businesses and savings groups. The entrepreneurship program also includes business skills and financial literacy training and mentorship and will support women in launching more than 700 new small businesses.

Since 2018, The Starbucks Foundation has been supporting women and girls in coffee- and tea-growing communities through a variety of grants to organizations working in Africa, Asia and Latin America.

Starbucks has a long history of investment in coffee, tea and cocoa producing communities to address their most critical needs, with a recognition that an investment in women and girls leads to greater impact for families and communities as a whole. On International Women’s Day 2018, The Starbucks Foundation announced a <a href="https://stories.starbucks.com/press/2018/starbucks-partners-with-malala-fund-to-invest-in-women/">new goal to empower 250,000 women and girls in origin communities by 2025</a>.

To reach that goal, The Starbucks Foundation is supporting programs around women’s leadership, access to finance, and healthy homes. These projects aim to break down barriers to education, promote clean water and sanitation (WASH), and create economic opportunities for women and girls. Since 2018, The Starbucks Foundation has made 11 grants totaling nearly $4 million to organizations working with coffee and tea communities across Africa, Asia, and Latin America. These grant recipients include:

Malala Fund | Global, 2018-2020 To support girls’ education through advocacy, amplifying young women's voices and expanding the Gulmakai Network of education activists. This includes the selection of Bondita Acharaya of the Purva Bharati Educational Trust as a Gulmakai Champion, whose project will enroll out-ofschool girls, train girls as education advocates, and work with tea plantations to improve learning outcomes for 3,200 girls in Assam, India.

Lutheran World Relief | Colombia, 2018-2021 To empower women in Tolima, Colombia through improved sanitation and greater economic opportunity. The project will strengthen local women’s associations, increase access to finance through micro-loans, and promote women’s leadership in cooperatives through gender-integration training, ultimately reaching 3,000 people.

Instituto del Café de Costa Rica | Costa Rica, 2018-2019 To support safe places for children of migrant coffee pickers to stay during the day with educational games and tools that promote improved hygiene and well-being at Casas de la Alegria. ICAFE and local partners developed a Health Week for over 500 girls and boys, which included various activities and workshop to promote improved hygiene and well-being for the children and their families.

Barefoot College | India, 2018-2021 To promote women’s economic leadership and wellness in tea communities in India, particularly among seasonal workers. The program will empower women workers with personal skills development and training on technical skills in honey and solar devices production and scale, and also encourage self-care, nutrition and sanitation through greater awareness and better access to facilities, aiming to directly benefit over 3,000 community members.

UNICEF Ethical Tea Partnership | India, 2018-2021 To improve the lives of women and children in Assam’s tea communities. The Ethical Tea Partnership and UNICEF will promote health, nutrition, education, water, sanitation, and hygiene, while also empowering adolescent girls and boys with knowledge, skills, and support.

CARE | Indonesia, 2018-2020 To support women and girls’ economic empowerment and water/sanitation/hygiene (WASH) programs in West Java, Indonesia. The project will engage 1,750 individuals in a tea smallholder village; providing capacity building in women’s leadership, financial literacy and WASH practices as well as greater access to financial services

Lutheran World Relief | Indonesia, 2018-2021 To support women-led community health and hygiene programs for 2,100 households in Indonesian coffee-producing villages. Trainings will focus on improving the capacities of women in leadership roles in addressing and advocating on water, health, and sanitation issues in their communities, including within existing community governance structures.

Roger Federer Foundation | Malawi, 2018-2021 To support quality early childhood education, including water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) programs, in community based childcare centers in vulnerable villages bordering tea communities in Malawi. This project includes improvements and educational programming reaching 1,600 children in 10 preschools, as well as empowerment of management committees and caregivers.

Days for Girls International | Rwanda, 2018-2019 To build leadership and income-earning potential of women farmers in Rwanda by creating access to washable menstrual supplies, entrepreneurial opportunities, and community health education training. The establishment of sewing enterprises to locally produce the supplies and a training program to mentor women to serve as community health educators, allow women to fully participate in their communities with confidence.

Send a Cow | Rwanda, 2018-2021 To empower 15,400 people in coffee growing communities in Rwanda with the knowledge and skills to live healthily and sustainably from the land. The project will improve farm production, access to water, sanitation and home hygiene, and support social and economic empowerment leading to healthier homes and families.

World Relief | Rwanda, 2018-2021 To empower 12,960 women to thrive through safe relationships, healthy homes, and clean drinking water and economic opportunity in Rwanda. The program includes training 1,110 women in understanding government policies, strategic priorities, and women’s rights, and establishing train-the-trainer groups and village level women’s leadership forums to build confidence and awareness at the community and national levels.
