The first sip of a Starbucks Pumpkin Spice Latte or Pumpkin Cream Cold Brew cues the unofficial start of the fall season for many customers, and Starbucks is celebrating its return alongside a full menu of fall favorites.

Starting Tuesday, Aug. 30, the iconic Starbucks <a href="https://www.starbucks.com/menu/product/418/hot?parent=%2Fdrinks%2Fhot-coffees%2Flattes" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Pumpkin Spice Latte (PSL)</a>, is back for its 19th year. The handcrafted beverage combines Starbucks® Signature Espresso and steamed milk with flavors of cinnamon, nutmeg and clove to complement the real pumpkin in the sauce. Topped with whipped cream and pumpkin pie spices, PSL is available hot, iced or blended at U.S. stores throughout the season while supplies last.

Also available for a limited time is the <a href="https://www.starbucks.com/menu/product/2123113/iced?parent=%2Fdrinks%2Fcold-coffees%2Fcold-brews" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Pumpkin Cream Cold Brew</a>, which returns to the menu for a fourth year. Crafted with Starbucks® Cold Brew sweetened with vanilla syrup, the fan-favorite fall sip is topped with pumpkin cream cold foam and a dusting of pumpkin spice.

First introduced to the fall menu last year, the Apple Crisp Macchiato returns with a twist – now made with creamy oatmilk and Starbucks® Blonde Espresso as the standard recipe. Inspired by the flavors of the warm and gooey apple crisp paired with a cup of coffee, the <a href="https://www.starbucks.com/menu/product/2123563/hot?parent=%2Fdrinks%2Fhot-coffees%2Fmacchiatos" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Apple Crisp Oatmilk Macchiato </a>combines layered flavors of apple, cinnamon, and brown sugar with a spiced apple drizzle.

“Crafting the Apple Crisp Oatmilk Macchiato with Starbucks® Blonde Espresso gives the beverage a soft and smooth foundation that ties all the flavors together,” said Harvey Rojas Mora, Starbucks beverage developer. “The oatmilk adds a creaminess and brings forward the oat flavors of a traditional apple crisp topping.”

Introducing Starbucks newest autumn beverage, Apple Crisp Macchiato, perfect for the arrival of crunchy leaves and sweater weather

There’s nothing like a fall beverage from Starbucks when you start to feel that little chill in the morning air. Ever since <a href="https://stories.starbucks.com/stories/2014/starbucks-first-pumpkin-spice-latte/">Pumpkin Spice Latte</a> (PSL) first arrived in the autumn of 2003, Starbucks fall beverages have been the perfect companion for the arrival of <a href="https://www.facebook.com/groups/LeafRakersSociety/">crunchy leaves and sweater weather</a>.

For nearly 20 years, Starbucks beverage teams have created new autumn flavors for customers to enjoy, whether it’s past favorites like the <a href="https://www.starbucks.com/menu/product/2122411/hot?parent=%2Fdrinks%2Fhot-coffees%2Flattes">Maple Pecan Latte</a> and <a href="https://www.starbucks.com/menu/product/761/hot?parent=%2Fdrinks%2Fhot-coffees%2Fmochas">Salted Caramel Mocha</a> or the returning hit and companion to the Pumpkin Spice Latte, the <a href="https://www.starbucks.com/menu/product/2123113/iced?parent=%2Fdrinks%2Fcold-coffees%2Fcold-brews">Pumpkin Cream Cold Brew</a>. This year, fall gets a new beverage with Apple Crisp Macchiato, available iced or hot at Starbucks stores in the U.S. and Canada starting Aug. 24 for a limited time, while supplies last.

“For many customers, Starbucks signals the start of the fall season and has inspired a cultural phenomenon around fall flavor and products,” said Raegan Powell, senior manager on the Starbucks research and development team. “Fall at Starbucks brings customers back to the nostalgic flavors of the season and our team used that inspiration to create a new flavor that celebrates those feelings of comfort and familiarity.”

Building on the popularity of pumpkin flavor, the team’s inspiration for an apple beverage started with the idea of the fall harvest. Pumpkins are popular, but it was clear that apples were another prominent flavor that the team wanted to explore as they started concepting a new fall flavor. In spring 2020, the team began testing and tasting a bushel of apple-flavored favorites, including apple maple syrup, apple cider donuts, and a variety of apple pies, cakes, and crisps.

While fruit and coffee are a new territory for Starbucks, the flavors complement each other well, with the creaminess of the milk balancing the espresso for a nostalgic autumn pick-me-up.

“Creating an ingredient with a spicy baked apple flavor was crucial to be able to bridge an autumn red apple to espresso,” said Powell. “Consider how well a delicious slice of warm apple pie pairs with a cup of coffee or how well the combination of Starbucks roasty signature espresso pairs with warm spices such as cinnamon and nutmeg.”

When the team was testing, people loved the baked apple flavor. “The number-one thing we heard when developing the ingredients was customers wanted more apple,” Powell said. The Apple Crisp Macchiato pulls inspiration from a wide variety of red apple flavors available in the fall season, including apple puree in the caramelized apple drizzle. The Apple Crisp Macchiato even smells like fall, with an aroma like fresh-baked apple crisp.

For the final recipe, Powell and the team landed on a macchiato (which means “marked” in Italian), made with steamed milk marked with Starbucks signature espresso. As a finishing touch, the beverage is “marked” again with a cross-hatch of caramelized-spiced-apple drizzle, resembling the lattice on top of a pie. If the hot version is like warm apple pie, the iced version is like apple pie à la mode, with the warm flavors of apple and brown sugar combined with milk and ice, and also topped with apple caramel drizzle. For the name, the team chose “apple crisp” for the beverage’s more apple-forward taste, and its brown sugar and cinnamon topping.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“We are hopeful customers will enjoy their Apple Crisp Macchiato, hot or cold, and feel comfort as they take on all that fall has to offer, says Powell. “No matter our customers’ traditions – football games apple picking, or trick-or-treating – the Apple Crisp Macchiato is bound to bring comfort in a cup.”

Falling leaves aside – the return of Pumpkin Spice Latte (PSL) represents the true start of the autumn for many customers. And this year, Starbucks has declared August 27 as the first day of fall with the return of the fan-favorite PSL and the new Pumpkin Cream Cold Brew, both made with real pumpkin.

Since PSL first made its <a href="https://stories.starbucks.com/stories/2014/starbucks-first-pumpkin-spice-latte/">debut in 2003</a>, more than 424 million Pumpkin Spice Lattes have been served in the United States. The group of more than 30,000 has been in a high state of anticipation for the flavors of fall in stores and <a href="https://stories.starbucks.com/press/2019/new-starbucks-pumpkin-spice-creamer-coming-to-u-s-grocery-stores/">at home</a>, posting an average of 330 times per day over the past month.

Following in the footsteps of this iconic fall beverage, Pumpkin Cream Cold Brew is the first new pumpkin coffee beverage to join the Starbucks menu in 16 years and a testament to Starbucks customers’ love of cold coffee (50 percent of beverage orders are cold beverages, up from 37 percent in 2013). After trying 10 variations of the beverage, the Starbucks R&amp;D team settled on a recipe that starts with <a href="https://www.starbucks.com/menu/drinks/brewed-coffee/cold-brew-coffee">Starbucks Cold Brew</a> and vanilla, topped with pumpkin cream cold foam and a dusting of pumpkin spice topping.

“With customer excitement for PSL sweeping the nation each fall, we wanted to create a new beverage that combines two of our customers’ favorite things, pumpkin spices and cold brew,” said Matthew Thornton from Starbucks beverage R&amp;D team. “With each sip of Pumpkin Cream Cold Brew, you’ll enjoy the familiar, creamy, flavor of pumpkin spice followed by a refreshing taste of cold brew, for a cool beverage that will have you wishing it was fall all year long.”
