Starbucks hosted its biennial Investor Day today at the Starbucks Support Center in Seattle, where Howard Schultz, interim chief executive officer, Rachel Ruggeri, chief financial officer, and other members of the Starbucks leadership team showcased the company’s Reinvention plan. They discussed the actions and investments the company is making to enhance the Starbucks Experience for partners and customers and drive accelerated long-term growth.

Highlights shared by the company include:

1. Reinvention plan positions Starbucks for the next chapter of growth

The Reinvention plan is ushering Starbucks into a new era of growth, underpinned by a renewed focus on the foundations of its business – partners, stores and customers. Investing in this powerful “Triple Shot for Growth” will continue to differentiate the Starbucks brand and experience. The company announced today that it expects <a href="https://stories.starbucks.com/press/2022/starbucks-enters-new-era-of-growth-driven-by-an-unparalleled-reinvention-plan/">deliver 10-12 percent net revenue growth</a> and 15-20 percent net earnings growth annually over the next three years, surpassing the 10-12 percent range shared at the last Starbucks Investor Day in 2020. This reflects acceleration in each and every building block of our growth, powered by Starbucks green apron partners around the globe.

2. Starbucks is focused on reinventing the partner experience

Company leaders shared commitments to radically improve the retail partner experience, making changes to focus on helping partners thrive at work, as individuals and together through new tools such as wage innovation, well-being benefits and personalized career mobility. It’s paying off as Starbucks has started to see results with retention rates steadily rising and on track to return to and exceed pre-pandemic levels.

3. The Starbucks brand is building on strength

The Starbucks brand is more relevant and differentiated than ever before with the number one market share and brand affinity. It’s a strong, relevant brand that is poised for growth. Starbucks has the highest brand affinity among Gen Z and multicultural consumers, who also make up more than half of the customer base. And, among multicultural consumers, Starbucks is the market leader on brand affinity, visits and is the first choice among away-from home coffee drinkers that identify as LatinX, African American and Asian American.

4. Going Global: The digital Starbucks experience is coming to all stores

With mobile orders accounting for 25 percent of customer transactions in the U.S., Starbucks is elevating the digital Starbucks Experience, including through providing real-time updates in the app and a dedicated mobile order pick-up lane. By making Mobile Order &amp; Pay more personalized and effortless, Starbucks will continue to drive relevancy for customers and growth in mobile orders.

To meet growing customer demand, Starbucks is committed to expanding its digital Starbucks Experience to all locations, from airports and grocery stores to international markets, and Starbucks Connect is the new technology that is making this possible. With a consistent digital experience across Starbucks entire portfolio of stores, customers will get a holistic Starbucks Rewards experience, including Mobile Order &amp; Pay and a wider arrange of star redemption opportunities, no matter which Starbucks they visit.

5. A purpose-built approach to meeting customer needs

Over the next three years, Starbucks sees continued opportunity for purpose-built store growth as demand for the brand increases. This includes increasing the number of drive-thrus while also expanding the number of stores that are “purpose built,” such as delivery only and curbside pick-up stores. In addition, this design approach will help modernizing physical stores to serve the increasing demand while creating an environment that is inclusive and accessible, through the lens of sustainability. It’s all part of meeting customers whenever and wherever they are.

6. Harnessing global store growth opportunities

Starbucks is rapidly expanding its global footprint and expects to approach 45,000 stores by the end of 2025 (up from nearly 35,000 now) and 55,000 stores by 2030 – this means opening eight new stores a day. Starbucks is already well on its way; in China, Starbucks has increased its footprint nearly 10-fold to 6,000 stores, and is continuing to grow, as it targets increasing store count by 50 percent to reach 9,000 stores by fiscal year 2025.

7. New, innovative equipment will give baristas more time for customer connections

Starbucks is introducing more efficient <a href="https://stories.starbucks.com/stories/2022/recipe-for-reinvention-starbucks-unveils-innovations-for-better-customer-barista-experiences/">state-of-the-art equipment</a> putting better tools in the hands of partners and, in turn, driving an improved partner and customer experience. Starbucks has developed a redesigned Cold Beverage Station, which reduces the time and number of steps to make a cold beverage. It has also begun rolling out new Clover Vertica™ equipment, which will freshly grind and brew a cup of coffee, on demand, in 30 seconds.

8. Cold Brew took center stage at the morning coffee tasting

When Starbucks first launched its&nbsp;loyalty program in 2008, it was based on the simple idea of an old-fashioned punch card (remember those?), rewarding loyal customers for their in-store purchases and encouraging them to keep coming back. But instead of paper cards, customers could register their Starbucks gift cards online to earn benefits, including a free birthday beverage.

The next year, the first Stars were awarded as <a href="https://stories.starbucks.com/stories/2009/my-starbucks-rewards-launches/">the Starbucks Card Rewards merged with the Starbucks Gold Card membership program</a> to create a single streamlined <a href="https://www.starbucks.com/rewards/">Starbucks Rewards</a> loyalty program. Millions of customers began collecting Stars and the program soon expanded into the groundbreaking Starbucks app where <a href="https://stories.starbucks.com/stories/2011/mobile-payment-debuts-nationally-at-starbucks/">paying with the app became possible</a> in 2011. Then in 2014, the program began to offer members the ability to <a href="https://stories.starbucks.com/stories/2014/starbucks-mobile-order-and-pay/">order ahead and pay</a> in the app. In an effort to allow members to earn Stars on purchases inside and outside of Starbucks stores, Starbucks and Chase introduced the <a href="https://stories.starbucks.com/press/2018/starbucks-and-chase-introduce-starbucks-rewards-visa-prepaid-card/">Starbucks Rewards™ Visa® Prepaid Card in 2018</a>. The flexibility and choice of Rewards expanded too, with <a href="https://stories.starbucks.com/press/2019/starbucks-to-enhance-industry-leading-starbucks-rewards-loyalty-program/">tiered Rewards starting in 2019</a> to include merchandise and at-home coffee, which members could now start redeeming for as soon as they joined.

Today (Sept. 15) marks the next evolution in the industry-leading loyalty program, with <a href="https://stories.starbucks.com/press/2020/starbucks-to-update-loyalty-program-and-app-this-fall-to-offer-more-ways-to-pay-and-earn-stars/">even more ways to pay and earn Stars</a> through the Starbucks app. At company-operated stores in the U.S. and Canada, Starbucks Rewards members can scan their app and then pay with cash, credit/debit cards, or select mobile wallets and earn Stars toward free items. Members can also save these payment methods directly in the Starbucks app to earn Stars when paying.

In honor of today’s milestone, here are some fun facts about the Starbucks Rewards program:

175 million free Rewards

Since the <a href="https://stories.starbucks.com/press/2019/starbucks-to-enhance-industry-leading-starbucks-rewards-loyalty-program/">April 2019 enhancement of Starbucks Rewards</a>, members in the U.S. have redeemed more than 175 million free Rewards, big and small, using Stars.&nbsp;At participating stores, 25 Stars is all members need to start redeeming free Rewards like an extra espresso shot, dairy substitute or a dash of syrup. 50 Stars gets members a brewed hot coffee, bakery item or hot tea, 150 Stars can be redeemed for a handcrafted drink, hot breakfast or parfait, 200 Stars will get members a lunch sandwich, protein box or salad, and 400 Stars can be redeemed for select merchandise or a bag of coffee.

In 2019 alone, Starbucks awarded more than 100 million Stars in Starbucks for Life and the Summer Game across the US and Canada.

There have been 41 million prizes awarded to members in the U.S. and Canada since Starbucks Rewards games started in 2014.&nbsp; This includes 58 members who have won <a href="https://www.starbucksforlife.com/#/">Starbucks for Life</a>.

Many members use their Rewards to treat a friend – or even a stranger. In 2016, a Starbucks Rewards member in Washington state who had saved up more than 17,000 Stars over six months <a href="https://stories.starbucks.com/stories/2016/starbucks-customer-rewards-service-members/">gave away more than 100 free drinks</a> to military personnel serving in the area.

Starbucks Rewards purchases represented nearly half of all purchases at U.S. company-operated stores from April through June 2020.

SEATTLE – Today, Starbucks announced plans to accelerate the transformation of its store portfolio in the U.S. through the integration of the physical and digital customer experience. These changes are accelerated due to a retail environment that has shifted because of COVID-19 and to meet the already evolving customer needs of convenience, connection and personalization offered through a digital experience. Over the next 18 months, Starbucks will increase convenience-led formats in company-operated locations with drive-thru and curbside pickup options, as well as Starbucks® Pickup locations. These store experiences are powered by the Starbucks® App which is integral to ordering and paying ahead as well as engaging the company’s 19.4 million Starbucks® Rewards members.

“Starbucks stores have always been known as the ’third place,’ a welcoming place outside of our home and work where we connect over a cup of coffee,” said Kevin Johnson, ceo, Starbucks. “As we navigate through the COVID-19 crisis, we are accelerating our store transformation plans to address the realities of the current situation, while still providing a safe, familiar and convenient experience for our customers.” 

The U.S. store portfolio transformation includes the expansion of new Starbucks® Pickup stores in dense markets including New York City, Chicago, Seattle and San Francisco, and convenience-led enhancements such as curbside, drive-thru and walk up windows in suburban areas. With customers’ increased use of the Starbucks App to order ahead, and the national availability of Starbucks® Delivers through Uber Eats, Starbucks will also renovate select store layouts, including the addition of a separate counter for mobile orders at high volume stores, which will make it easier for customers and delivery couriers to pick up their order. Core to the Starbucks Experience is the connection between the customer and partners (employees). Starbucks new designs will enable partners to focus on the customer and craft beverages, as well as enhance how partners work together.

The acceleration of the store transformation was shared in an <a href="https://stories.starbucks.com/uploads/2020/06/Letter-from-Kevin-Johnson-and-Pat-Grismer-2020.pdf">open letter</a> from Starbucks ceo Kevin Johnson as part of the company’s plan to navigate and adapt to a new COVID-19 economy and shifting consumer behaviors. Starbucks will blend the traditional sit and stay cafe with new on-the-go experiences and reposition its network of stores to best serve its customers. Whether a customer visits a Starbucks drive-thru on the weekend, uses a Pickup location on the way to work, meets a colleague in a café, or sends a friend coffee through Starbucks Delivers, Starbucks has an effortless way to meet their unique needs throughout the day.

On the Go Experiences&nbsp;

Prior to the COVID-19 crisis, approximately 80 percent of Starbucks U.S. transactions were on-the-go, driven in part by the ability to order and pay ahead using the Starbucks® App. While the pandemic has disrupted customer behavior, the company’s strong digital relationships, combined with the ability to adjust locations through store renovations, relocations and new builds, and add new store formats, are unique strengths that Starbucks will lean into as part of this plan. This strategy aligns closely with rapidly evolving customer preferences that have accelerated as a result of COVID-19, including higher levels of mobile ordering, more contactless pick-up experiences and reduced in-store congestion, all of which naturally allow for greater physical distancing. 

Starbucks®&nbsp;Pickup&nbsp;

Following strong sales and enthusiastic customer and partner response, the company has committed to the expansion of the Starbucks® Pickup store. These locations are intended for customers in dense metropolitan markets looking to order and pay ahead using the Starbucks App on the way to their next destination. The first Pickup store has been operating in Penn Plaza in New York City since November 2019 and soon a second location in New York City will open at 42nd and Park near Grand Central Terminal. Since opening, customer engagement has been high and partner feedback on the store design and customer experience has been positive. 

Curbside&nbsp;Pickup&nbsp;&nbsp;

In addition to Pickup stores, customers will soon be able to utilize curbside pickup from their car. Customers will use the Starbucks App to order and pay ahead as well as check-in at designated parking spots at the store once they arrive. Curbside pickup is an experience accelerated due to the COVID crisis as well as customers’ increasing need for convenience in on-the-go occasions. Over the coming months, Starbucks will increase the number of stores that offer Curbside pickup as well as pilot a select number of locations to exclusively offer this format. 

The drive-thru is Starbucks original on-the-go experience. The company plans to continue to expand and enhance the drive-thru for customers including opening new locations outside of densely populated cities and in new markets. The company will also design new experiences that could include double lane drive-thru, or drive-thru plus curbside pickup, all of which would leverage the ordering and payment capabilities of the Starbucks App.

A cup of coffee is much more than a daily routine. Perhaps now more than ever, it represents a bright spot in the day and a link to the familiar.

As Starbucks <a href="https://stories.starbucks.com/stories/2020/navigating-through-covid-19/">responds to the impacts of coronavirus (COVID-19)</a>, the company is welcoming customers back to stores with modified store operations and pausing on seating in cafés to help create social distance. Service offerings vary by store, including drive-thru, grab-and-go café service, and order-ahead entryway pickup. Delivery continues to be another option through <a href="https://delivery.starbucks.com/">Starbucks Delivers</a> in markets across the United States and Canada through the Uber Eats app.

The <a href="https://www.starbucks.com/coffeehouse/mobile-apps">Starbucks app</a> is accessible, and the easiest place to find a store, check hours, order ahead and have contactless payment. Here’s your guide to getting your favorite Starbucks beverages and food digitally.

It’s easy to customize your favorite Starbucks order from your phone using the <a href="https://www.starbucks.com/coffeehouse/mobile-apps">Starbucks app</a>, and then pick it up from a barista at your store’s designated area. Here’s how to do it:

Step-by-step instructions for ordering ahead

In addition to the order ahead and pay feature, the Starbucks app allows for contactless digital payments in the store. &nbsp;

If ordering in the store, click on the “scan” button then go into the “scan &amp; pay” tab. Choose how you want to pay, then scan to earn Stars and pay seamlessly in one step. In the app you can also add funds to your Starbucks Card or save a credit/debit card or PayPal account.

Additionally, Members can simply scan the QR code on the “Scan only” tab, then pay separately with a credit/debit card, cash, or mobile wallet to earn Stars without preloading or saving a payment method. Customers can also use their contactless credit/debit cards to pay at the register in-stores by simply tapping their card on the payment terminal, eliminating the need to insert their card.&nbsp; Cards that allow for this payment method will have the following logo on the back of the card: 

In many U.S. markets, customers can also use <a href="https://delivery.starbucks.com/">Starbucks Delivers</a> to have their favorite Starbucks food and beverages brought to their door through Uber Eats.

To order, download the <a href="https://apps.apple.com/us/app/uber-eats-order-food-delivery/id1058959277">Uber Eats app for iPhone at the App Store</a> or for <a href="https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ubercab.eats&amp;hl=en_US">Android on Google Play</a>, and set up your user profile. Select “Order food” at the bottom of the screen, confirm delivery address, search for “Starbucks,” and select the location closest to you. Nearly all food and beverages from the Starbucks menu, as well as several seasonal items, are available to order and can be customized.

For their delivery, customers can enable a “contactless” handoff by adding a delivery note to the order to request their delivery person leave their order at the door. Once their order is sent, customers can track progress of their order and location of their Uber Eats delivery person until it reaches their door.

On Tuesday, November 5, Starbucks Coffee Company will open the first-ever Starbucks® Pickup store in New York City’s Penn Plaza, designed for Starbucks customers on-the-go. This unique location uses Starbucks Mobile Order &amp; Pay (a feature of the industry-leading Starbucks mobile app) as the primary ordering and payment method for customers. Starbucks Pickup is just one way the company is modernizing and reimagining the customer experience in its stores in high-traffic, metropolitan areas.

Customers who visit this first-of-its-kind location will place and pay for their order using Mobile Order &amp; Pay on the Starbucks mobile app. They will simply select “Starbucks Pickup – Penn Plaza” as their desired location and build their order using the full Starbucks menu.&nbsp;After arriving at Penn Plaza, customers can track the progress of their order on a digital status board and pick up their handcrafted beverage and food items directly from a Starbucks barista.&nbsp;

“Our customers who are on-the-go have told us that connection and convenience are important to them,” said Katie Young, vice president of Urban Markets for Starbucks. “By designing a store specifically for the mobile order occasion, we can deliver both for these customers using the store’s design, location and the expertise of our baristas.” 

In designing the Starbucks Pickup location, the company began with a prototype in the Tryer Center, <a href="https://stories.starbucks.com/stories/2019/inside-the-tryer-center-the-starbucks-lab-where-anything-is-possible/">a center for innovation at the Starbucks Support Center</a> in Seattle. At Tryer, teams focused on operations, digital innovation and design worked with store partners (baristas) to create an experience that not only met customer needs but gave store partners the tools they needed to deliver the best customer experience. An early prototype produced a high volume of customer orders but received low marks from baristas due to constrained space and inability to connect with customers. With that feedback, the team immediately start over and landed a store that met both the customer and the partner’s needs.

Starbucks customers around the world are able to choose from a wide range of experiences. An exclusive feature for Starbucks Rewards members through the Starbucks China app

Launch reinforces Company’s commitment to delivering transformative retail experiences

Today, Starbucks began to roll out the company’s Mobile Order &amp; Pay experience, Starbucks Now, to 300 select stores in Beijing and Shanghai and plans to introduce this feature across China over the next year.

Starbucks Now allows customers to place an order in advance of their visit and pick up their beverage and food at a Starbucks® store. The new feature is exclusively available to Starbucks Rewards® loyalty program members through the Starbucks China mobile app. This feature is testament to Starbucks commitment to driving meaningful innovation that brings high-quality coffee to customers, while using digital technology to address their needs for convenience and speed.

We are excited to offer this special Mobile Order &amp; Pay service exclusively to our Starbucks Rewards members to provide convenience and speed to suit their on-the-go lifestyle and seamlessly integrate Starbucks into their daily lives.”

The rollout of Starbucks Now builds on the digital capabilities and infrastructure of the recently introduced Starbucks Delivers™ program in 2018. Starbucks Now will provide customers in China a unique and convenient way to order, pay and pick up their favorite Starbucks beverage and food item without the wait.

Additional Convenience for Starbucks Customers

Innovating at the accelerated pace of modern urban life in China, Starbucks Now allows customers to choose a store location based on the GPS functionality of their mobile device to browse, customize a beverage, select a food offering, view order time, and pay — wherever they may be. Following confirmation of the order, baristas handcraft each beverage and have the order ready to hand to the customer when they arrive at the store. The simple convenience of mobile ordering means customers bypass the line.

In addition, Starbucks Rewards members also get Stars using Starbucks Now on all purchases, earning Stars 25% faster than if paying with a Starbucks stored value card, and reap rewards including free beverage and food and personalized offers through the mobile order feature.

An Uplifting Personalized Order and Pick-Up Experience

Starbucks Now is curated to enable customization in an entirely enhanced mobile order experience. Through the feature, customers can modify the beverage size, select the number of espresso shots and select their dairy preference. In a first-ever mobile order feature for Starbucks, beverage options have been expanded to include: type of espresso shot, amount of whip cream and room for milk.&nbsp;

For beverages with strict temperature requirements for quality, such as Nitro Cold Brew, Cold Foam Cold Brew and Coffee plus Ice Cream, Starbucks baristas will handcraft beverages upon arrival. 

Building on the Company’s mission to inspire and nurture the human spirit, Starbucks has created a unique and personalized pick-up experience for orders placed using Starbucks Now. Mobile order customers will receive a secret code with an uplifting message to brighten their day. When the customer arrives at the store to pick up their purchase, they can share the secret code with the barista to pick up the order.

To register for the Starbucks Rewards program in China, customers can download the Starbucks® China mobile app and register to become a member.
