Starbucks Coffee Company today shared a series of updates on programs and partnerships focused on addressing the root causes of chronic homelessness in its hometown of Seattle, Washington. Building on the company’s 50-year legacy of work to strengthen and uplift its local community, Starbucks announced nearly a half a million dollars of investments that will take place throughout 2022 to advance solutions that support those experiencing chronic homelessness in the greater Seattle region.

Over the last four years, chronic homelessness has <a href="https://21652974-25d8-4ff1-bbc0-8687c8ec1f64.filesusr.com/ugd/e29733_aa81289128314502b14a7811a485f42e.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">risen</a> at an annual rate of 42% in Seattle-King County – the second fastest in the United States. Additionally, Starbucks is continuing to learn from its existing&nbsp;Outreach Worker pilot program, which is currently active in seven cities across&nbsp;the country including in Seattle in partnership with Catholic Community Services. This program, launched back in 2020, aims to support store partners in high-incident stores by connecting them to outreach workers who bring expertise in hyper-local social work and can support customers with critical needs, while decreasing non-critical reliance on law enforcement.

“Addressing chronic homelessness&nbsp;is not&nbsp;a singular problem or one that we can solve alone,” said Hymes. “It’s our role and responsibility to stay true to our mission and values to strengthen the communities we serve, and we are committed to providing immediate support while investing in areas that will catalyze systemic change.”

Since the beginning, Starbucks has been committed to strengthening its hometown, and these investments are a demonstration of Starbucks support for its partners, customers and community members in the greater Seattle area. This holiday season, Seattle public radio station KEXP and Starbucks are joining together with Mary’s Place to help bring awareness and raise funds for their <a href="https://secure.e2rm.com/p2p/event/345923">No Child Sleeps Outside</a> campaign to support unsheltered families.

About No Child Sleeps Outside

The No Child Sleeps Outside campaign is Mary’s Place annual crowdfunding campaign that helps bring unsheltered families inside.

This year, the No Child Sleeps Outside campaign has a fundraising goal of $2 million. Support of Mary’s Place is critical as unsheltered families in our community are facing greater levels of uncertainty due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Funds raised for the campaign will enable Mary’s Place to create a Rapid Response Fund that will help move families experiencing homelessness from streets and shelters back into safe, permanent housing and also help keep vulnerable families from losing their homes.

For the last five years, as part of Starbucks <a href="https://stories.starbucks.com/stories/community/">ongoing commitment</a> to its hometown and strengthening the communities in which it serves, the company has stood side by side with Mary’s Place to raise awareness about unsheltered families and support their annual No Child Sleeps Outside campaign. This year, The Starbucks Foundation is contributing $250,000 to&nbsp;help&nbsp;launch the campaign. To date, The Starbucks Foundation has contributed more than $3 million to connect unsheltered families to critical resources and care to help them move into stable, permanent and safe housing.

Together with the Seattle employer community, Starbucks has helped to raise over $13 million through the No Child Sleeps Outside campaign to open seven emergency shelters with Mary’s Place, increase assistance to help families stay in their homes, and host Family Resource Exchange events around the region to provide critical resources.

Mary’s Place is a leading service provider of safe, inclusive shelter and services that support women, children and families on their journey out of homelessness.

Since 1999, Mary’s Place has helped hundreds of women and families move out of homelessness into more stable situations. Across several emergency family shelters in King County, we&nbsp;keep struggling families together, inside, and safe when they have no place else to go, providing resources, housing and employment services, community, and hope.&nbsp;

More than 2,000 families are living in tents or cars on any given night in the Seattle area, according to the Seattle Human Services Department. Starbucks, along with United Way of King County, Mary’s Place, Wellspring Family Services and the University of Washington, are working to help to help change that. &nbsp;

A year ago, the groups formed a coalition to support unsheltered families and individuals across the Puget Sound region. Since then, &nbsp;the coalition has led eight Family Resource Exchange events connecting more than 5,000 individuals to critical services, including housing resources for more than 900 families. At the most recent exchange in October, at Seattle Central College, two-thirds of the 253 families that accessed housing resources were experiencing homelessness. More exchanges are planned for the next year.

The Family Resource Exchange concept stemmed from a homelessness summit hosted at Starbucks Support Center in Seattle in 2018 when the company convened business leaders, government officials and homeless advocates to develop possible solutions to the growing family homelessness crisis. The group agreed to create a venue for businesses, the public sector and non-profits to meet families directly in their communities to provide resources, with an emphasis on providing access to stable housing. Families get access to more practical needs as well: haircuts, shoes, warm gloves, food and childcare.&nbsp; 

The events target unsheltered families in King County, families living in cars and vehicles, families at immediate risk of becoming homeless and immigrant and refugee families.

The Starbucks Foundation has committed over $750,000 towards the Family Resource Exchanges, which supports costs related to organizing and hosting the events, as well as "Streets to Home" flexible funding that helps move many of the families into stable housing.

“In just one year, we’ve seen real impact through the Family Resource Exchanges – it’s a model that’s working, but there’s still more to do,” said John Kelly, Starbucks executive vice present of global public affairs and social impact. “We encourage others in the business community to join as well.”

“We are working to meet the needs of the hundreds of unsheltered families in our community,” said Lauren McGowan, senior director of ending homelessness &amp; poverty for United Way of King County. “That’s why the partnership with Starbucks, Mary’s Place, Wellspring and the University of Washington is so powerful. With their support we can go to where these families and students are and offer them more resources that are relevant to them – whether that’s housing, special services for college students, on-the-spot job interviews, haircuts, new shoes or groceries for the week.”

“These neighborhood-based events are such an effective way to connect with families in need in our community,” said Marty Hartman, executive director of Mary’s Place. “At these smaller locations we can meet families where they are, build relationships and offer them the services they need to be stably housed.”&nbsp;

“The Family Resource Exchange is remarkable for the diversity of resources all being on location, at the same time, poised to help families,” said Walter Washington, senior director of housing services at Wellspring Family Services. “But we know it can be overwhelming for families, so we aim to personally help each family navigate successfully – and we see evidence that this extra attention is effective for lasting solutions.”

In August, the University of Washington joined the coalition and hosted a Family Resource Exchange event at its Bothell campus, connecting local families and to housing options, job opportunities, financial coaching, public benefits and legal expungement services. The UW will host additional exchanges at its Seattle and Tacoma campuses sometime in 2020. 

The University of Washington’s involvement is important as it will expand the coalition’s ability to serve more families and young people in the region, particularly students battling homelessness and food insecurity.

In the year leading up to that survey, an estimated 4,800 to 5,600 students experienced housing instability, spending nights in a vehicle, shelter or tent, or staying with friends.

“We know that&nbsp;some of our students are struggling to maintain stable living situations and reliable access to healthy food, especially as the cost of living has increased,” said Sally J. Clark, University of Washington’s director of regional &amp; community relations. “We are glad to join in as part of the community to support stable housing not just for our students and their families, but also for our neighbors.”

Coalition leaders call on more in the business community to join the effort

 SEATTLE – Today local community leaders welcomed University of Washington to a coalition dedicated to supporting unsheltered families across Puget Sound. The University will host three Family Resource Exchanges that will take place on its campuses in Bothell, Seattle and Tacoma, expanding the coalition’s ability to help unsheltered families in the region. This commitment comes shortly after the one-year anniversary of the first exchange in King County last summer.

In one year, Starbucks, United Way of King County, Mary’s Place and Wellspring Family Services have led six exchanges connecting more than 3,000 families to critical resources and services, including housing resources for more than 800 families. 

Family Resource Exchanges: An innovative model

The Family Resource Exchange concept stemmed from a homelessness summit hosted at Starbucks Support Center in SoDo last year when the company convened business leaders, government officials and homeless advocates to develop possible solutions to the growing family homelessness crisis. The group agreed to create a venue for businesses, the public sector and non-profits to meet families directly in their communities to provide resources, with an emphasis on providing access to stable housing.

The next Family Resource Exchange will take place at the University of Washington Bothell campus on Wednesday, August 21. This will include services to help connect families to housing options, job opportunities, financial coaching, public benefits, legal expungement and special services for students experiencing homelessness. Additional Family Resource Exchanges will take place at the University of Washington’s Seattle and Tacoma campuses, with dates to be announced.

To extend its support of unsheltered families, Starbucks announced earlier this month it will present the SEAchanger waterfront concert alongside KEXP and Friends of the Waterfront on September 14. The full price of each ticket sold will go toward service providers like Mary’s Place and Wellspring Family Services to increase their support of unsheltered families in King County.
