Before <a href="https://stories.starbucks.com/stories/2019/starbucks-peppermint-mocha-a-love-story/">Peppermint Mocha</a>, before <a href="https://stories.starbucks.com/redcupdesigns/">red holiday cups&nbsp;</a>– there was Christmas Blend. This beloved holiday coffee was Introduced in 1984, back when Starbucks had only five locations in Seattle and they didn't sell drinks and food, just whole bean coffee, tea and spices. The new coffee blend showcased Starbucks artistry in roasting and blending with an expert combination of lively Latin American beans and mellow Indonesian coffees. The finishing touch was the addition of rare, spicy Sumatra beans that were painstakingly aged for three to five years for a full-bodied, spicy and rich cup of coffee.

Customers quickly snapped up the hand-scooped bags of Christmas Blend, and the air in stores was soon filled with the roasty-sweet aroma of Christmas Blend. The roasting plant ramped up production, as more and more shipments arrived each morning to meet the growing demand, their white metal bins still warm from the fresh-roasted beans inside.

Ever since that very first holiday, Christmas Blend has become a cherished part of the holidays, whether it’s shared around a table or given as a <a href="https://stories.starbucks.com/stories/2021/holiday-beverages-and-red-cups-arrive-at-starbucks-nov-4/">perfectly wrapped gift</a>. Its legacy continues with this year’s vintage, created by Starbucks team of expert coffee developers to honor its rich heritage while bringing in new coffees from Latin America, Africa and Indonesia and considering brewing methods such as iced and cold brew.

Nothing says the most magical time of the year like the Starbucks red cup returning. This year is extra special as Starbucks celebrates 25 years of the iconic holiday cup and the return of a full menu of seasonal handcrafted beverages and festive food.

Starting Nov. 3, holiday beverages officially return to the Starbucks menu, including the Peppermint Mocha, Caramel Brulée Latte, Chestnut Praline Latte, Toasted White Chocolate Mocha, Irish Cream Cold Brew and, returning for its second holiday season, the nondairy Iced Sugar Cookie Almondmilk Latte.

In the bakery case, new this year is the Chocolate Pistachio Swirl, which joins the returning Reindeer Cake Pop, Sugar Plum Cheese Danish, Cranberry Bliss Bar and Snowman Cookie.

Turning 20 this year, the Peppermint Mocha has become one of the <a href="https://stories.starbucks.com/stories/2019/starbucks-peppermint-mocha-a-love-story/">most beloved holiday beverage on the menu</a>. The beverage, which debuted in 2002, features espresso combined with steamed milk, mocha sauce and peppermint-flavored syrup, topped with whipped cream and dark chocolate curls*.

Espresso, steamed milk and rich caramel brulée sauce are combined and topped with whipped cream and caramel brulée topping to create the Caramel Brulée Latte*.

The Chestnut Praline Latte features espresso, steamed milk and the flavors of caramelized chestnuts and spices topped with whipped cream and spiced praline crumbs*.

Toasted White Chocolate Mocha

Festive flavors of caramelized white chocolate mocha sauce meet espresso and steamed milk to create our Toasted White Chocolate Mocha, which is then finished with whipped cream and a topping of holiday sugar sparkles and crispy white pearls*.

Iced Sugar Cookie Almondmilk Latte

Back for a second season, the Iced Sugar Cookie Almondmilk Latte combines sugar cookie syrup, Starbucks® Blonde Espresso, ice, creamy almondmilk, and is topped with festive red and green sprinkles*.

The Irish Cream Cold Brew unites bold, super smooth Starbucks Cold Brew with Irish Cream syrup, which is then topped with vanilla sweet cream foam and a strike of cocoa powder.

NEW Chocolate Pistachio Swirl

The NEW Chocolate Pistachio Swirl’s creamy chocolate filling with notes of cinnamon is swirled into buttery brioche-inspired dough, topped with chopped pistachios**.

Vanilla cake with chocolaty icing is finished with a festive red nose and antlers to make the Reindeer Cake Pop**.

Sugar Plum Cheese Danish

The Sugar Plum Cheese Danish features cream cheese filling surrounded by a fluffy Danish and topped with spiced sugar plum spread**.

A blondie cake with tart dried cranberries, garnished with a layer of cream-cheese icing, orange zest and a sprinkle of dried cranberries make up the beloved Cranberry Bliss Bar**. Also available for purchase by the tray.

20 years already? Learn the story behind the most beloved of beverages, Starbucks Peppermint Mocha

When does it officially feel like the holidays? For some it could be hearing the first notes of holiday music or seeing that first flurry of snow. But for the last two decades, the arrival of the holidays can be marked by that first taste of Starbucks Peppermint Mocha and its rich, full-bodied espresso mingled with the flavor of chocolate, peppermint and whipped cream. 

Starbucks Peppermint Mocha may be one of the most-loved of holiday beverages, but it wasn’t actually the first. <a href="https://stories.starbucks.com/stories/2022/an-insiders-guide-to-christmas-blend-and-starbucks-holiday-coffees/">Christmas Blend</a> coffee made its debut in 1984, hand-scooped and packaged in brown kraft paper coffee bags to be brewed at home. Then came the first handcrafted holiday beverage in 1986, created behind the espresso bar at Il Giornale (which merged with Starbucks in 1987) by Dave Olsen, who steamed up a pitcher of eggnog and milk to make the first Eggnog Latte.

Ten years later, <a href="https://stories.starbucks.com/stories/2022/celebrating-25-years-of-starbucks-mostly-red-holiday-cups/">the first red Starbucks cup made its appearance</a> and, as the company expanded into Europe, Asia and the Middle East, Starbucks created its first beverage research and development team.

“Customers’ understanding of espresso and lattes was really in its infancy,” said Peter Dukes, who joined Starbucks as a product manager for espresso beverages in 2001. “I think [a holiday beverage] was a good introduction for a lot of people back then to lattes and espresso.”

After successfully launching Gingerbread Latte (now available in Canada and select international markets) in 2000, the R&amp;D team was tasked with exploring ideas for the next holiday beverage. Dukes remembers being invited to the R&amp;D team’s Liquid Lab to be part of a team of about 10 partners who tasted new beverage concepts. The group was truly cross-functional – including partners from operations, finance, supply chain. 

The team tried a few different flavors that would resonate with customers during the holiday, including an idea for a white chocolate cranberry beverage. But they quickly landed on a peppermint-flavored twist on the classic Caffè Mocha inspired by the flavors of traditional holiday candies. From there, the team refined the recipe, finding the perfect combination of rich Starbucks espresso with bittersweet mocha sauce, peppermint syrup, and steamed milk, topped with whipped cream and a sprinkle of red sugar sprinkles. 

The beverage was introduced to Starbucks customers for the 2002 holiday season, and quickly became the most popular holiday beverage in Starbucks history. It’s still among the most loved holiday beverage on the menu today and is available hot, iced and blended. Its recipe has changed only a little; it’s now made with 2 percent milk as the standard and with dark chocolate curls on top instead of red sprinkles.

“To know you're part of something that turned out to be pretty special years later is unique. It takes me back to those times in the Liquid Lab with an extremely diverse group of partners sitting around a table tasting different variations of the peppermint mocha,” Dukes said. “None of us were professionally trained, but we ended up with a beverage that continues to resonate with our customers today and we had a lot of fun making it.”
