Here’s a little taste of Starbucks holiday drinks around the world

20 years already? Learn the story behind the most beloved of beverages, Starbucks Peppermint Mocha

When does it officially feel like the holidays? For some it could be hearing the first notes of holiday music or seeing that first flurry of snow. But for the last two decades, the arrival of the holidays can be marked by that first taste of Starbucks Peppermint Mocha and its rich, full-bodied espresso mingled with the flavor of chocolate, peppermint and whipped cream. 

Starbucks Peppermint Mocha may be one of the most-loved of holiday beverages, but it wasn’t actually the first. <a href="https://stories.starbucks.com/stories/2022/an-insiders-guide-to-christmas-blend-and-starbucks-holiday-coffees/">Christmas Blend</a> coffee made its debut in 1984, hand-scooped and packaged in brown kraft paper coffee bags to be brewed at home. Then came the first handcrafted holiday beverage in 1986, created behind the espresso bar at Il Giornale (which merged with Starbucks in 1987) by Dave Olsen, who steamed up a pitcher of eggnog and milk to make the first Eggnog Latte.

Ten years later, <a href="https://stories.starbucks.com/stories/2022/celebrating-25-years-of-starbucks-mostly-red-holiday-cups/">the first red Starbucks cup made its appearance</a> and, as the company expanded into Europe, Asia and the Middle East, Starbucks created its first beverage research and development team.

“Customers’ understanding of espresso and lattes was really in its infancy,” said Peter Dukes, who joined Starbucks as a product manager for espresso beverages in 2001. “I think [a holiday beverage] was a good introduction for a lot of people back then to lattes and espresso.”

After successfully launching Gingerbread Latte (now available in Canada and select international markets) in 2000, the R&amp;D team was tasked with exploring ideas for the next holiday beverage. Dukes remembers being invited to the R&amp;D team’s Liquid Lab to be part of a team of about 10 partners who tasted new beverage concepts. The group was truly cross-functional – including partners from operations, finance, supply chain. 

The team tried a few different flavors that would resonate with customers during the holiday, including an idea for a white chocolate cranberry beverage. But they quickly landed on a peppermint-flavored twist on the classic Caffè Mocha inspired by the flavors of traditional holiday candies. From there, the team refined the recipe, finding the perfect combination of rich Starbucks espresso with bittersweet mocha sauce, peppermint syrup, and steamed milk, topped with whipped cream and a sprinkle of red sugar sprinkles. 

The beverage was introduced to Starbucks customers for the 2002 holiday season, and quickly became the most popular holiday beverage in Starbucks history. It’s still among the most loved holiday beverage on the menu today and is available hot, iced and blended. Its recipe has changed only a little; it’s now made with 2 percent milk as the standard and with dark chocolate curls on top instead of red sprinkles.

“To know you're part of something that turned out to be pretty special years later is unique. It takes me back to those times in the Liquid Lab with an extremely diverse group of partners sitting around a table tasting different variations of the peppermint mocha,” Dukes said. “None of us were professionally trained, but we ended up with a beverage that continues to resonate with our customers today and we had a lot of fun making it.”

It’s easy to do – just ask your barista or customize your drink on the <a href="https://www.starbucks.com/rewards/mobile-apps">Starbucks® app</a>.

You can request nonfat milk when ordering any classic seasonal beverage. While 2 percent&nbsp;milk is standard, beverages can be made with nonfat milk or dairy-free options including almondmilk, coconutmilk, oatmilk and soymilk. &nbsp;

Go sugar free. You can select sugar-free syrup, sugar-free vanilla or sugar-free cinnamon dolce for great festive flavor in your holiday beverage without added calories or sugar. &nbsp;

Ask for less syrup to reduce the sweetness and calories in any holiday beverage. &nbsp;

You can ask for just a little&nbsp;whip or no whip&nbsp;to save between 80 and&nbsp;110 calories, depending on the size and type of drink – a great way to still enjoy a Peppermint Mocha or seasonal Frappuccino® blended beverage. Or for iced coffee beverages, you can request a dollop of unsweetened cold foam (which is made with nonfat milk) for a creamy treat.

You can choose the beverage size that's right for you. Even the short (8-ounce) option for hot beverages packs plenty of cheer.

Even if you didn’t grow up with spritz cookies, chances are you’ve seen them at a holiday gathering or cookie exchange. They are the prettiest cookies on the plate. They get their name from the German word&nbsp;spritzen, which means “squirt” and pretty much describes how the cookie is made by squeezing the dough through a cookie press into festive shapes.

These slightly sweet, melt-in-your-mouth treats are the inspiration for Starbucks newest holiday drink, Iced Sugar Cookie Almondmilk Latte, available at U.S. Starbucks stores Nov. 4.&nbsp; The non-dairy iced beverage is made with sugar cookie flavored syrup, combined with Starbucks® Blonde Espresso, almondmilk, and topped with red and green cookie sprinkles. It is just as delicious hot, with steamed almondmilk and a cap of foam with sprinkles.

“Almond is used quite a bit in baking,” said Erin Marinan, product development manager for Starbucks R&amp;D, who led product development with Starbucks partner (employee) Sara Bennett. “The almond flavor from the almondmilk makes for a natural pairing with the nutty notes in Starbucks Blonde Espresso. We also wanted to harness the buttery and vanilla notes of the cookie, which you can pick up in the aroma from that first sip from the sugar cookie flavored syrup and sprinkles. It reminds me of making cookies with my mom and sisters growing up. It gives me all the nostalgic feels of the holiday.”

The beverage is the first non-dairy holiday coffee beverage on the Starbucks menu. It joins the icy&nbsp;<a href="https://www.starbucks.com/menu/product/2123139/iced">Irish Cream Cold Brew</a>, which is making its earliest debut on the holiday menu this year, also on Nov. 4. “At this time of year, I always think back to the fun I had baking cookies with my mom and sisters growing up. It’s such a warm memory,” Marinan said. “Everyone seems to have a different recipe they like to make over the holidays, whether it’s to give as a gift to a group of friends or leave out for Santa. I love how this moment brings everyone together.” The beverage is available at stores in the U.S., several convenient&nbsp;<a href="https://www.starbucks.com/ways-to-order/">ways to order,</a>&nbsp;as well as for delivery through Starbucks Delivers on Uber Eats (check the Uber Eats app for availability and restrictions).

Did someone say cookies?

Early in the development of the beverage, Rosalyn Batingan of the Starbucks beverage development team baked up her first batch of spritz cookies in her home kitchen. Batingan is self-taught (although she’s working on her degree in food science and nutrition through the <a href="https://stories.starbucks.com/stories/2021/meet-partners-graduating-through-the-starbucks-college-achievement-plan/">Starbucks College Achievement Plan</a>) and joined beverage development five years ago after more than 14 years working in Starbucks and Seattle’s Best Coffee stores.

“I’ve always had this passion for baking,” Batingan said. “My mom is Filipino, and we cooked all the time. She threw parties so I was able to be in the kitchen with her since I was really small and I would like to help her prepare things.”

As the team’s resident foodie and baker, she is often called upon for culinary inspiration, as she did with the Irish cream fudge &nbsp;that would inspire the flavors of <a href="https://stories.starbucks.com/stories/2019/introducing-irish-cream-cold-brew/">Irish Cream Cold Brew</a>. With the development of Iced Sugar Cookie Almondmilk Latte, she tinkered with her cookie recipe as the team perfected their beverage, creating an airy cookie with a light, buttery texture and subtle almond flavor to would become the signature flavors of the almondmilk latte.

"I've been blessed to be in a position where I can use my love of baking and concepting to help create something others can enjoy," she said.

Inspiration for a new Starbucks beverage can come from anywhere. A flavor, a feeling, a flicker of memory.

For Erin Marinan, product developer for Starbucks R&amp;D, it was a bit of all three. Tasked with concepting a new beverage for Starbucks, she drew from memories of making homemade Irish cream with her family, blending up creamy batches to add to coffee or give to loved ones as a gift. It sparked the idea for a beverage with classic Irish cream flavors perfect for a time of celebration and giving. 

Starting Dec. 3, customers at participating stores in the United States and Canada can enjoy Starbucks newest holiday beverage, Starbucks® Irish Cream Cold Brew. The beverage is made with Starbucks Cold Brew coffee and Irish cream syrup over ice, topped with a frothy cap of vanilla sweet cream cold foam like a layer of fresh snow and a dusting of cocoa powder. The flavors of vanilla and cocoa perfectly complement the smooth cold brew to create a deliciously festive beverage. (In Canada, customers can also try a hot version with the <a href="https://stories.starbucks.ca/en/stories/2019/irish-cream/">Irish Cream Americano</a>.)

“It pairs so well with cold brew because of the chocolate flavor in the Irish cream and the cocoa notes from the coffee,” Marinan said. “I think about that customer who’s in the middle of work or shopping, and this will help get them into the holiday spirit for the rest of the day.”

The hottest trend in cold coffee

Cold coffee continues to be a hot trend, even in the <a href="https://stories.starbucks.com/stories/2019/iced-coffee-and-urban-moose-life-at-the-northernmost-starbucks-on-the-planet/">most wintry weather</a>, part of a cold beverage lineup that now makes up more than half of U.S. Starbucks beverage sales. And cold foam, first introduced <a href="https://news.starbucks.com/news/video-inside-starbucks-reserve-roastery-and-tasting-room">in Starbucks Roastery locations in 2014</a>, has been an inventive addition atop beverages in Starbucks stores <a href="https://stories.starbucks.com/press/2018/introducing-cold-foam-at-starbucks/">since April 2018</a>, starting with Cold Foam Cascara Cold Brew, and followed by the sweet and savory Salted Cream Cold Brew that July. This fall brought the new <a href="https://stories.starbucks.com/stories/2019/starbucks-declares-the-first-day-of-fall-with-return-of-psl-and-new-pumpkin-cream-cold-brew/">Pumpkin Cream Cold Brew</a>, the first new pumpkin coffee beverage since Pumpkin Spice Latte launched in 2003, and an instant hit with customers.

“Cold foam has been key for us from the innovation side of product development,” Marinan said. “It highlights our coffee craft with a great creamy texture and those beautiful layers. It's adding a little bit of flavor in a way that's unique to Starbucks.”
