For each bottle of Ethos™ water purchased in Starbucks U.S. Company-operated stores, US$0.05 is contributed to the Ethos Water Fund at the Starbucks Foundation. These funds support Starbucks goals of contributing at least US$10 million by 2010 to nonprofit organizations that are helping to alleviate the world water crisis.

Participants across the country will recognize this day by attending Walks for Water and World Water Day Film Screenings. Earthwatch Institute, the world's leading environmental volunteer organization, and Starbucks Coffee Company (NASDAQ: SBUX) are proud to announce the extension of their partnership that brings Starbucks partners (employees) and customers together on Earthwatch environmental expeditions. The 2007 project will focus on conducting scientific research designed to benefit a cooperative of 2,600 coffee farms in Costa Rica.

Partners and customers with a taste for adventure can participate in this different kind of Starbucks Experience, at the source of the bean, and do good deeds for the environment. This summer, eight partners and 20 customers will have a chance to join special Earthwatch expeditions at CoopeTarrazÃÂº, a coffee cooperative in central Costa Rica. These Earthwatch volunteer teams will use GIS (Geographic Information System) technology to provide a broad scale analysis of factors important to a farmer – including soil erosion and water quality. This program is the first component of Starbucks $1.1 million, three-year commitment, representing the growing partnership with the Earthwatch Institute that began in 2000.

In 2005, Starbucks sent partners and customers on a two-week Earthwatch expedition to plant tree seedlings, restoring part of Costa Rica's vanishing rainforest. "Planting trees to help restore the rainforest in Agua Buena, Costa Rica was an amazing, life-changing opportunity," said Amber Chenoweth, a Starbucks partner in Seattle who was selected to participate to volunteer on the expedition. "I was able to blend all my passions: connecting with others, coffee, conservation, photography and helping others. I actually got to live the Starbucks guiding principle: contributing positively to our communities and environment."

Earthwatch volunteers at CoopeTarrazÃÂº will map water resources and biodiversity indicators, such as the number and types of trees and insects. Local farmers will receive the maps, research results, and management tools to enhance the environmental sustainability of their farms, as well as yield and quality of their coffee. In addition, the partnership will provide support for educational development and fostering community for 40 local leaders.

Starbucks, a leader in the global community, and Earthwatch have worked together on 15 different conservation projects.Â The partnership spawned expeditions in diverse settings around the world, including Kenya, Belize, and Vietnam. Since the early 1990s, Earthwatch has been working with organizations in Africa, Asia, and Latin America on a number of conservation issues to provide training and networking opportunities in communities where research is being conducted. Starbucks Coffee Company [NASDAQ:SBUX] announced today that the average price per pound it paid for all its coffee increased from US$1.28 in fiscal year 2005 to US$1.42 ($3.12 per kilogram) in fiscal year 2006. During the same period the industry average “C” (commodity) market price was $1.04 per pound ($2.28 per kilogram). Additionally, Starbucks announced that the coffee the Company purchased through its independently verified coffee sourcing and purchasing guidelines, known as C.A.F.E. Practices, increased from 77 million pounds (35 million kilograms) in fiscal year 2005 to 155 million pounds (70 million kilograms) in fiscal 2006 – 53 percent of the total coffee purchased by the Company. This represents a year-over-year increase of 100 percent. “At Starbucks, our commitment to pay premium prices for premium quality coffee has not wavered over the years,” said Dub Hay, senior vice president, Coffee.   “It’s an approach that not only serves the short- and long-term economic interests of coffee farmers and suppliers; it also serves our needs by creating an incentive for farmers to improve quality and increase production. That, in turn, contributes to a more sustainable supply of the high-quality coffee we depend on to support our continued growth.”  Starbucks developed C.A.F.E. Practices (Coffee and Farmer Equity Practices) in partnership with Conservation International and Scientific Certification Systems to provide incentives for coffee to be cultivated and processed in a sustainable manner. Beyond paying premium prices for premium quality coffee, coffee purchased under C.A.F.E. Practices guidelines meets criteria around social responsibility in the farming community, economic transparency to help ensure equitable payment to farmers for their crops, and environmental leadership. "Starbucks has shown real leadership by demonstrating how its supply chain can be a powerful tool for conservation and sustainable livelihoods," said Glenn Prickett, senior vice president for Conservation International. Starbucks Coffee Company (Nasdaq: SBUX) and Starbucks Brasil today announced that its first two stores in Brazil will open this week in Sao Paolo at Shopping Morumbi. The first store is located in the new wing of the mall and the second at the opposite next to the Saraiva Bookstore.

"The customization of drinks to each customer's specifications is one of the things that makes Starbucks special and a lot of fun for our customers," said Flavio Guimarães and Bruno Pappa, the first two store managers for Starbucks Brazil. "Our store partners look forward to helping customers find their favorite beverage and sharing with them their coffee knowledge. We'll take customers on regular coffee journeys where they will enjoy different varieties of coffee from Brazil and around the world."

In addition to opening its first stores in the country, Starbucks is looking forward to supporting community social projects in Brazil. Prior to opening its operations in Brazil, Starbucks partnered with Todos pela Educacao (Everybody for Education), a non-governmental organization committed to supporting educational initiatives. On November 30, the evening before the grand opening, Starbucks will host a charity event to benefit Sao Paulo's Oswaldo Aranha High School. Funds raised at the event will be matched by Starbucks and used to help rebuild the school's library.

"Contributing positively to the communities in which Starbucks does business is a fundamental part of Starbucks culture," said Hendrix.

"Besides helping to build a new, larger and more modern library, we will provide all the books needed to create a better studying environment for the students," said Rodenbeck.

Oswaldo Aranha High School, which has more than 1,600 students, was selected by Starbucks because of its excellent standards and its commitment to providing the best education possible to its students.

"Starbucks Brasil is pleased to have formed such a mutually beneficial and rewarding partnership," added Rodenbeck. "We are looking forward to being involved in the local community."
