Starbucks Anticipates Record Purchases of Starbucks Cards on Christmas Eve

SEATTLE, December 17, 2014 – As customers finalize their holiday shopping, Starbucks anticipates record purchases of Starbucks Cards on Dec. 24, citing the trend for customers to push their gift card purchases later and later.  Last year, more than 2 million Starbucks Cards were purchased in the U.S. and Canada on Christmas Eve – representing nearly 1,500 cards purchased per minute.

“More so than ever before, we have an unprecedented variety of Starbucks Cards available to our customers – ranging from the premium Sterling Silver Starbucks Card all the way through monogrammed cards, which can be purchased for $5,” said Ryan Records, vice president of Starbucks Card. “One in every 8 American adults received a Starbucks Card last holiday season, and we’re well on track for another record performance in Starbucks Card sales, as we celebrate our 14th year of offering Starbucks Cards.”

The National Retail Federation reports that eight in ten shoppers will purchase a gift card this holiday season, and this is the eighth year in a row gift cards have topped wish lists. Since Starbucks Card launched 13 years ago, more than $20 billion has been loaded on Starbucks Cards in the U.S. and Canada alone, with $4 billion of that in the past year. Today, Starbucks Cards are available in 29 countries worldwide with further expansion planned in 2015.
