Seoul, KOREA — Today, Starbucks Korea announced the expansion of its profit-sharing Community Store program, with a second Community Store location to open in the first half of 2020 with more to follow.

The upcoming Community Stores will focus on the three pillars of Starbucks Korea’s social impact initiatives: investing in young people seeking opportunities, promoting environmental sustainability and celebrating Korean cultural heritage. Through the Community Store profit-sharing model, Starbucks works together with local non-profits and community organizations in South Korea to fund innovative programs that empower the local community. 

“For nearly 50 years, Starbucks has believed that one of the most important contributions we can make is to serve as a catalyst for positive impact in the communities where we do business,” said John Culver, group president, International, Channel Development and Global Coffee &amp; Tea. “As a company, each year we try to live up to this responsibility in new and meaningful ways. I’m proud to announce that this year, we’re introducing a plan that will increase our commitment to building more Community Stores across South Korea.”

Culver announced the Community Store expansion plan to a packed hall of more than 1,600 Starbucks Korea partners (employees) who had come together for a full day of learning and engagement at the Store Managers’ Leadership Conference in Goyang, the largest gathering of partners in South Korea. With the announcement, Culver presented a unique Community Store green apron to David Song, president and CEO of Starbucks Korea.

“This year marks the 20th anniversary of Starbucks in Korea. Throughout our history, we have challenged ourselves to build a different kind of company in Korea by staying true to our mission and values, embracing new ideas and innovation that are meaningful to our customers and inspiring to our partners,” said Song. “We opened the first Community Store in Korea five years ago to help create pathways to opportunity for young people. We are pleased with the positive impact we’ve made in the neighborhood, and are excited to elevate our commitment with the opening of more Community Stores starting next year.”

The first Community Store in Korea opened in 2014 in the Daehakro neighborhood of Seoul.&nbsp;KRW300 (30 cents U.S.) from every purchase at this store is donated to Green Umbrella ChildFund Korea (ChildFund Korea) to directly support lifelong skills development for youth through the Starbucks Comprehensive Youth Leadership Program. Over the past five years, customer purchases at the Daehakro Community Store have generated over 830,000 USD, which Starbucks Korea has invested in supporting aspirational young people in Korea.

The Starbucks Comprehensive Youth Leadership Program is an innovative, holistic program that builds on the collaboration with ChildFund Korea to offer academic scholarships and leadership development opportunities to young people. It also features a unique curriculum focused on business acumen, collaborative communications and social consciousness as part of its aim to prepare young people from disadvantaged backgrounds for higher education and future careers.

Starbucks® food and beverage now available for delivery in China through Alibaba’s smart speaker, Tmall Genie

Shanghai, CHINA – Today, Starbucks is taking another step toward evolving the digital experience for customers in China by launching voice ordering and delivery capabilities within Alibaba’s smart speaker, Tmall Genie. Customers can now order their favorite Starbucks beverages and food simply by using their voice for delivery within 30 minutes. Leveraging Alibaba’s on-demand food delivery platform, Ele.me, the voice ordering capabilities for Starbucks further extend the customer experience within Starbucks digital ecosystem.&nbsp;

The launch of the new service marks the one-year anniversary of Starbucks and Alibaba’s strategic partnership which advances the New Retail infrastructure and digital power in China — one of the fastest-growing markets in the world for coffee consumption. The announcement also builds on several significant collaborations between the two companies that enable a seamless Starbucks Experience for Chinese customers, such as establishing back-of-house kitchens, Star Kitchens, within Alibaba’s Freshippo supermarkets in China.

Starbucks® Rewards members also can earn Stars and receive membership updates, including benefits, on the Tmall Genie. Soon, members will be able to receive personalized recommendations when using voice commands to place orders that are tailored to previous order preferences and popular items from Starbucks seasonal menu. As another added benefit, Starbucks fans in China can also listen to the latest Starbucks in-store playlists through Alibaba’s music streaming app, Xiami Music.

Powered by Alibaba’s speech AI and voice print payment technology, Tmall Genie orders help expand the high-quality Starbucks Delivers experience that is consistent with the Starbucks standards, including specially-designed splash-proof lids for both hot and cold beverages, tamper-proof packaging seals and individual hot and cold delivery containers to ensure orders arrive at the optimal temperature for enjoyment.

An exclusive Starbucks-themed Tmall Genie is available through the Starbucks virtual store in China, which unifies Starbucks offerings within Alibaba’s mobile apps, including Taobao, Alipay and Tmall.

Seattle – Starbucks Corporation (NASDAQ: SBUX) announced today the appointment of Richard (Ritch) E. Allison, Jr., Chief Executive Officer of Domino’s; Andrew (Andy) Campion, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of NIKE; and Isabel Ge Mahe, Apple’s Vice President and Managing Director of Greater China, to the Starbucks Board of Directors. These appointments increase Starbucks Board of Directors to 13.&nbsp;&nbsp;

All three joined the Starbucks Board of Directors effective Sept. 11, 2019. Other members of the Starbucks Board of Directors include: Myron E. Ullman III, Mellody Hobson, Roz Brewer, Mary Dillon, Kevin Johnson, Jørgen Vig Knudstorp, Satya Nadella, Joshua Cooper Ramo, Clara Shih and Javier Teruel.

Allison has served as Domino’s Chief Executive Officer since July 2018. He previously served as President, Domino’s International from October 2014 to July 2018, after joining the company in March 2011 as Executive Vice President of International. Allison will serve on the company’s Compensation and Management Development Committee.

Campion will serve on the company’s Audit and Compliance Committee. He joined NIKE in 2007 and since 2015 has served as Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of NIKE, Inc., with responsibility for all aspects of strategy and financial management.

Ge Mahe joined Apple in 2008, overseeing the development of cellular, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Near Field Communication (NFC), location and motion technologies for nearly every Apple product. She also played a key role in developing new China-specific features for iPhone and iPad. In her current role, she provides leadership and coordination across Apple’s China-based team. She will join the company’s Nominating and Corporate Governance Committee.

Tianjin, China – Today, Starbucks unveiled its flagship Reserve store in Tianjin, China. Located in Riverside 66, a Renaissance-style building constructed in 1921, this flagship store reimagines a nearly century-old heritage building to create an inspiring Third Place experience where history is brought to life and enriched with Starbucks coffeehouse culture.

“Over the past 20 years in China, Starbucks has constantly pushed to innovate and reimagine the Third Place experience, to bring people and communities closer together,” said Leo Tsoi, senior vice president, chief operating officer and president, Starbucks China - Retail. “We are immensely proud and privileged to preserve a revered piece of history that binds together four generations of Tianjin residents, and to share this rich cultural inheritance with more people, passing it on to future generations.” 

The Starbucks Reserve Riverside 66 Tianjin flagship store demonstrates Starbucks leadership in retail innovation and sets new standards in store concept and design by combining deep history with an entirely modern third-place experience for customers. For the first time in Tianjin, it features Starbucks Bar Mixato and Starbucks Teavana™ Bar, on top of its Starbucks Reserve offerings that reflect the company’s commitment to elevate and deliver an exceptional in-store experience while creating distinct, new Starbucks occasions in China. 

Rejuvenating a Historical Icon

Located in Tianjin’s leading commercial street, the building holds a special place in the hearts of local residents as an iconic city landmark that was a witness to key eras in modern Chinese history. Designed by Shen Liyuan, who was among the first pioneers of Chinese architects to study overseas, it housed the Zhejiang Xinye Bank till the early 1950s, and was a symbol of the city’s economic prosperity and development. In the 1980s, the early days of China’s economic transformation, it reopened as the high end Yongzheng Tailor Shop before becoming the Xinye Foreign Trade Mall. The location was officially designated as a city heritage site in 1997 and has been left vacant for the past two decades – a cultural gem waiting to rediscover its glorious past.

Driven by the passion and responsibility to revive this rich cultural heritage, Starbucks took on an unprecedented challenge to preserve the building’s original architecture and to restore the landmark to its full splendor, while infusing modern, creative elements that complement and give new life to the space. Working in collaboration with local historic preservation experts, it took three years of relentless effort by passionate Starbucks partners to navigate technical complexities and realize the vision for this ambitious project.

Customers can now admire up close the exquisite craftsmanship and grandeur of a bygone era, which include a majestic Greek style exterior façade and aesthetically breathtaking interior decorations, most notably a glass dome, imported marble columns and marble carvings. The original bank counters have also been fully preserved, allowing customers a peek into what a bank from a century ago looked and felt like. Meanwhile, creative use of bronze tubes ensured that no nail had to be struck into the columns when lighting was installed. Lighting and air conditioning systems were also ingeniously embedded into the glass dome.

“Beyond preserving the century old architecture in its fullest form, the Starbucks flagship store has also made creative use of its unique features,” said Mr. Luo Shuwei, famous historian and senior researcher from the Tianjin Academy of Social Sciences. “Starbucks partners have shown great passion and dedication to ensure that every design detail is in harmony with the original architectural style, to create a warm and welcoming ambience that is also filled with history.” &nbsp;

A reimagined coffee and tea experience comes to Tianjin

The flagship store is also where Tianjin’s cultural legacy meets Starbucks coffeehouse culture, in a powerful blend that elevates the third place experience to new heights. Customers can not only feel the richness of history, but also savor the world’s best coffees and experience the human connection imbued in coffee culture.

At the center of the main hall is a U-shaped Reserve Bar, where well-trained, certified Starbucks baristas expertly craft Starbucks Reserve coffees using different brew methods and equipment, such as the Siphon, V60 and Black Eagle. Customers may taste the extraordinary flavors of some of the world’s rarest, most exalted and most sought-after small-lot coffees – selected from more than 250,000 cups evaluated by Starbucks team of expert tasters every year, and roasted with meticulous care in the Shanghai Roastery. Often coming from remote and rugged places, with limited harvests from lots as small as a family backyard, each Starbucks Reserve coffee has its own story to tell, with different factors like soil, temperature, elevation, and the amount of rainfall and sunshine making each coffee unique.

The flagship store also features Tianjin’s first Bar Mixato and Starbucks® Teavana™ Bar. The premium Teavana™ Bar reimagines a modern tea experience, while demonstrating deep respect for thousands of years of tea tradition. In the last year Family Resource Exchanges have provided thousands of unsheltered families with resources they need and connected hundreds of families with permanent housing

Coalition leaders call on more in the business community to join the effort

 SEATTLE – Today local community leaders welcomed University of Washington to a coalition dedicated to supporting unsheltered families across Puget Sound. The University will host three Family Resource Exchanges that will take place on its campuses in Bothell, Seattle and Tacoma, expanding the coalition’s ability to help unsheltered families in the region. This commitment comes shortly after the one-year anniversary of the first exchange in King County last summer.

In one year, Starbucks, United Way of King County, Mary’s Place and Wellspring Family Services have led six exchanges connecting more than 3,000 families to critical resources and services, including housing resources for more than 800 families. 

Family Resource Exchanges: An innovative model

The Family Resource Exchange concept stemmed from a homelessness summit hosted at Starbucks Support Center in SoDo last year when the company convened business leaders, government officials and homeless advocates to develop possible solutions to the growing family homelessness crisis. The group agreed to create a venue for businesses, the public sector and non-profits to meet families directly in their communities to provide resources, with an emphasis on providing access to stable housing. 

“In just one year, we’ve seen real impact through the Family Resource Exchanges – it’s a model that’s working, but there’s still more to do,” said John Kelly, senior vice present of global public affairs and social impact at Starbucks. “We’re proud to have University of Washington, one of Starbucks long-standing partners, join the effort, and we encourage others in the business community to join as well.” 

The next Family Resource Exchange will take place at the University of Washington Bothell campus on Wednesday, August 21. This will include services to help connect families to housing options, job opportunities, financial coaching, public benefits, legal expungement and special services for students experiencing homelessness. Additional Family Resource Exchanges will take place at the University of Washington’s Seattle and Tacoma campuses, with dates to be announced. 

“We are working to meet the needs of the hundreds of unsheltered families in our community,” said Lauren McGowan, senior director of ending homelessness &amp; poverty for United Way of King County. “That’s why the partnership with Starbucks, Mary’s Place, Wellspring and the University of Washington is so powerful. With their support we can go to where these families and students are and offer them more resources that are relevant to them – whether that’s housing, special services for college students, on-the-spot job interviews, haircuts, new shoes or groceries for the week.”

"These neighborhood-based events are such an effective way to connect with families in need in our community,” said Marty Hartman, executive director of Mary’s Place. “At these smaller locations we can meet families where they are, build relationships and offer them the services they need to be stably housed.”&nbsp;

“The Family Resource Exchange is remarkable for the diversity of resources all being on location, at the same time, poised to help families,” said Walter Washington, senior director of housing services at Wellspring Family Services. “But we know it can be overwhelming for families, so we aim to personally help each family navigate successfully – and we see evidence that this extra attention is effective for lasting solutions.”

Addressing the needs of homeless students

Coalition members praised the involvement of University of Washington in the Family Resource Exchange effort, as it will expand the ability to serve more families and young people in the region, particularly students battling homelessness and food insecurity.

In the year leading up to that survey, an estimated 4,800 to 5,600 students experienced housing instability, spending nights in a vehicle, shelter or tent, or staying with friends.

“We know that&nbsp;some of our students are struggling to maintain stable living situations and reliable access to healthy food, especially as the cost of living has increased,” said Sally J. Clark, University of Washington’s director of regional &amp; community relations. “We are glad to join in as part of the community to support stable housing not just for our students and their families, but also for our neighbors.”

To extend its support of unsheltered families, Starbucks announced earlier this month it will present the SEAchanger waterfront concert alongside KEXP and Friends of the Waterfront on September 14. The full price of each ticket sold will go toward service providers like Mary’s Place and Wellspring Family Services to increase their support of unsheltered families in King County. 

Mary’s Place believes that no one’s child should sleep outside. SEATTLE – Starbucks Corporation (NASDAQ: SBUX) today reported financial results for its 13-week fiscal third quarter ended June&nbsp;30, 2019. SEATTLE – Today, Starbucks Coffee Company (NASDAQ: SBUX) announced plans to make Starbucks® Delivers available throughout the U.S. in early 2020 through an agreement with Uber Eats as the preferred delivery provider of Starbucks® items. The intention to expand follows an 11-market rollout which demonstrated successful operational integration and received positive customer response to an effortless high-quality experience consistent with the Starbucks brand.

By partnering with Uber Eats, Starbucks is leveraging the expertise of the largest global delivery service outside of China while extending the potential customer base beyond those who currently include Starbucks as part of their morning or afternoon routines. Through the agreement, the companies will collaborate on innovation and technology integration. Starbucks and Uber Eats will continue to focus on delivery packaging, in-store operations, and a quick order-to-door delivery window.

Limited seating is available for customers who choose to stay and relax with their favorite food and beverages in the store.
