Starbucks is committed to paying premium prices for all our coffee. This is part of our integrated approach to coffee sourcing, which includes C.A.F.E. (Coffee and Farmer Equity) Practices, a set of socially and environmentally responsible coffee-buying guidelines.

Specifically in fiscal 2005, Starbucks paid an average price of US $1.28 per pound, which was 23 percent above the average New York "C" price during the same time period, for all of its coffees. Our approach to coffee purchasing, investment in social development projects and access to credit initiatives in coffee growing regions has been recognized for its leadership within the industry.

Access to Credit Starbucks, through its partnership with EcoLogic Finance, provides access to affordable loans to coffee producers. In Ethiopia, EcoLogic Finance granted a $400,000 loan to Sidama Coffee Farmers Cooperative Union (SCFCU). The project was complete in September 2005. Black Apron Exclusives The Black Apron Exclusive program awards US $15,000 to coffee farmers for harvesting especially unique coffees, helping fund projects that support their communities, the environment and coffee sustainability. These coffees are limited offerings because they are so rare. Since the Black Apron Exclusives program began, Starbucks has featured 12 coffees, 3 of which have come from Ethiopia: Ethiopia Harrar - The coffee farming village of Dire Dawa, donated the award money to support their community's medical services (Dil Chora Hospital) in providing medical equipments Shirkina Sun-dried – The Fero Cooperative will utilize the award money to partially finance construction costs of the cooperative’s new office to host various educational and medical trainings. Ethiopia Gemadro Estate – The award will be used to expand services and equipments of the existing clinic and school on the Gemadro Plantation. It will benefit an estimate number of 233 permanent workers and their families, 1241 temporary workers and 500 neighboring farmers and their families. African Wildlife Foundation In January 2005, together with Starbucks Coffee Company-USA, the AWF began a three-year program focused around Starbucks C.A.F.E Practices in Kenya with the aim of yielding higher quality coffee crops to benefit the farmer, the environment, and ultimately to positively affect the global coffee market. In February 2006, Starbucks Coffee Company UK Ltd and the African Wildlife Foundation commenced work alongside farmers and the Mt Kenya Water and Wildlife Programme to improve the basic needs of local farming communities. Starbucks names our coffees to honor the country of origin and to demonstrate how high quality Arabica coffees are grown. By naming coffee growing regions, we provide significant awareness to 40 million customers in more than 12,000 stores worldwide. This helps provide insight into coffee growing regions and celebrates coffee origins with coffee drinkers around the world. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed. Name of product: Starbucks Barista Aroma Stainless Steel 8-Cup Coffee Brewers Units: About 73,000 Distributor: Starbucks Coffee Company, of Seattle, Washington

Incidents/Injuries: The coffee brewer has defective electrical wiring that can result in overheating, smoking, burning and melting, posing a possible fire hazard. Starbucks has received 23 reports of melting in the plastic housing of the brewers. No injuries have been reported.

Description: This recall includes the Starbucks Barista Aroma 8-Cup Coffee Brewer only. "Starbucks Barista Aroma" is embossed on the front of the brewer and the brewer has silver control panel buttons and a chrome finish. The Starbucks Barista Grande 12-Cup Coffee Brewer and Starbucks Barista Solo Coffee Brewers are not included in this recall.

Sold at: Starbucks company-owned and operated stores nationwide between March 2005 and September 2006 for about $100.

Remedy: Consumers should stop using the recalled coffee brewers immediately and contact Starbucks for a full refund. Consumers will receive a postage-paid package along with instructions on how to return their brewer. Starbucks is also offering a coupon (valid through 1/31/07) for a free pound of coffee as an incentive to return the recalled machine.

Starbucks believes that the employment package we offer is compelling and relevant to our partners. For more than 20 years, Starbucks has offered a generous wage and benefits package to eligible partners, including those working just 20 hours per week or more.. Approximately 85 percent of partners have health coverage, either through Starbucks or another source, such as school, military or as a dependent. 

Additionally, the majority of our partners are eligible for ownership in the form of stock options, which makes them truly partners in the business. 

Our work environment fosters open, two-way communication and has many ways for our partners to share their thoughts, opinions and concerns. We believe that the direct employment relationship that we currently have with our partners is the best way to help ensure a great work environment. 

This has been confirmed in a recent partner survey in which the vast majority identified health benefits, opportunities for growth and development and a positive work environment as a few of the top reasons they choose to work for Starbucks. We have also received recognition from outside sources. Fortune magazine named Starbucks as one of "The 100 Best Companies to Work For" for the eighth time in 2006.

While Starbucks respects the free choice of our partners, we firmly believe that our work environment, coupled with our outstanding compensation and benefits, make unions unnecessary at Starbucks. We respect our partners' right to organize, but believe that they would not find it necessary given our pro-partner environment. 

We comply strictly with the laws and guidelines associated with union organizing activities. In fact, discipline and employment termination policies are applied consistently to all partners at Starbucks without consideration of their involvement in union activity. Starbucks takes very seriously its legal obligations and does not take action or retaliate against partners (employees) who express support for unions or take part in union activity.

In order to protect the confidentiality of our current and former partners, Starbucks does not provide specific details about any individual's employment. Partner performance is addressed only after careful consideration of many performance factors and consistent application of company policies and procedures governing employment in keeping with our guiding principle of treating all partners with respect and dignity.
