When Starbucks served its first cappuccino in Seattle in 1984, it was a revelation. For a nation that was accustomed to the acrid coffee served in diners and convenience stores, the handcrafted caramelly rich espresso and creamy foam soon redefined what coffee meant in America and around the world. Although Iced Coffee (brewed double-strength and poured over ice) was available by request in the early days, it was usually reserved for warm weather. The popularity of Starbucks hot espresso beverages largely powered Starbucks growth from just a handful of stores into the tens of thousands.
Fast forward three decades, and cold coffee was not just for summer anymore. More than half of Starbucks beverages served in the United States are cold, and Starbucks iced beverages have become year-round customer favorites. In addition to classic Iced Coffee, iced versions of Starbucks espresso-based beverages gained in popularity – Iced Caffè Latte, with espresso and milk over ice; Iced Latte Macchiato, an upside-down iced latte topped with espresso; and Iced Cappuccino, made with less milk for a stronger espresso flavor and finished with a frothy cap of steamed milk.
In 2018, cold foam is now the hottest new trend in cold coffee. Now joining the Starbucks cold foam menu are two new beverages: Salted Cream Cold Foam Cold Brew and Cold Foam Cold Brew. The beverages are available in participating stores starting today (July 10).
“We’re looking at cold beverages not just as an analog to hot,” said Jennica Robinson, product developer for Starbucks R&D. “We’re creating specifically for cold.”
While rich, steamed foam may have revolutionized Starbucks coffee in the 1980s, cold foam is a modern twist designed to be a perfect finish to cold beverages. It is frothed cold instead of hot and blended until smooth, creating layers of creamy texture and flavor without the cream. Starbucks launched its first cold foam beverages across the United States and Canada in April with Cold Foam Cascara Cold Brew (and as Nitro where available) and Cold Foam Starbucks Iced Blonde Cappuccino.
“Cold foam holds on top of your beverage, so every sip is just like the first.” Robinson said.
In addition to the cold foam beverages on the Starbucks menu, customers can also ask to add cold foam to their favorite iced drinks. The beverages are served with strawless lids, allowing customers to savor the silky cold foam with every sip.
Salted Cream Cold Foam Cold Brew
Sweet meets salty with the new Salted Cream Cold Foam Cold Brew. Salt in the foam made from vanilla sweet cream, beverage brings out the caramel and coffee notes of the cold brew for a truly culinary experience. The beverage is made with Starbucks Cold Brew and caramel syrup, topped with salted cream cold foam.
