        At 6am, many of us are reaching for the snooze button. But by then, Oliver (Oli) McBride has already been on the ice and is getting ready to clock in for his shift at Starbucks.<\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n

        Oli\u2019s life is divided between two worlds: the chill of the ice rink and the warmth of the coffeehouse. Freshly home from spending six-weeks performing in Mexico, he\u2019s back behind the counter and we caught up with him to talk early starts, latte art, and his post-training coffee hack.<\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n

        Oli started learning to skate at 14. \u201cMy mum was late picking me up one day,\u201d he explains, \u201cso I ended up going to watch a friend do her ice skating lesson and I just fell in love with it at first sight \u2013 and I\u2019ve been in love with it ever since.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n

        He started his career as a solo skater but would later train in adagio \u2013 a style of dance known for its awe-inspiring lifts and dramatic acrobatics \u2013 and would team up with his skating partner, Nylah. \u201cNylah\u2019s mum saw me practicing on the ice one day and asked if I might be interested in partnering up. I thought \u2013 why not? Let\u2019s just go for it.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n

        That \u201cgo for it\u201d mindset has shaped much of Oli\u2019s journey so far; a quiet confidence that says \u201cyes\u201d to every opportunity \u2013 whether he\u2019s mastering a difficult jump or learning how to pour the perfect rosetta.<\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n\n

        \u201cOn the ice, you\u2019re committed, you\u2019re focused, you\u2019re moving fast but with precision. At Starbucks, it\u2019s the same \u2013 you\u2019re crafting drinks that take skill and you\u2019re doing it quickly but precisely.\u201d<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n

        Oli divides his time training between rinks in Telford and Sheffield, UK, and he has an intense schedule. \u201cI train at ridiculous o\u2019clock in the morning,\u201d he laughs, \u201cI\u2019ll be on the ice doing jumps and spins, practising really, really hard.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n

        Afterwards, he reenergises with a well-deserved coffee: \u201cafter skating I head to the store to make an Iced Brown Sugar Oatmilk Shaken Espresso \u2013 but I have my own twist on it. I make it hot with three pumps of brown sugar syrup, three shots of Blonde Roast \u2013 and I actually substitute the Oatmilk for Whole Milk because I\u2019m trying to build muscle at the moment.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n

        Then the second part of his day begins \u2013 which calls for a different kind of discipline.<\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n\n

        “On the ice, you\u2019re committed, you\u2019re focused, you\u2019re moving fast but with precision,\u201d Oli reflects, \u201cat Starbucks, it\u2019s the same \u2013 you\u2019re crafting drinks that take skill and you\u2019re doing it quickly but precisely.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n

        He mentions latte art as an example \u2013 the careful pouring technique that creates intricate patterns on the surface of a coffee, like hearts or rosettas. \u201cLatte art is a really hard skill to learn. It\u2019s easiest with whole milk,\u201d he explains, effortlessly switching back into barista-mode, \u201cit\u2019s much harder with oat, soy or almond milk. And even the jug you use to pour the milk can make a difference. It sounds really complicated, but honestly it comes as second nature to me now.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n

        A supportive community<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n

        Oli joined Starbucks around two years ago, after searching for a job he would genuinely enjoy that could support his skating ambitions \u2013 one that could flex around early-morning training sessions and occasional skating contracts.<\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n

        From day one, he says, his team made it work. Supervisors taught him the craft, teammates helped him to build confidence behind the bar, and shift patterns were shaped around his time on the ice.<\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n\n

        \u201cI couldn\u2019t have wished for a better team\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/body><\/blockquote>\n\n\n

        That flexibility was put to the test when he was offered the chance to travel to Mexico to perform in a show over the festive season \u2013 one of the busiest times of year for Starbucks.<\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n

        \u201cI was worried,\u201d he admits, \u201cI wondered if I left for that long, would my job still be there for me when I got back?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n

        But after discussing it with his manager, a plan was put in place and he was reassured that his job \u2013 and his teammates \u2013 would still be there waiting for him when he came home. \u00a0<\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n

        He recognises the importance of a community to lift you up \u2013 both on and off the ice: \u201cAt the rink when I\u2019m not on the ice I\u2019m talking to my coaches, other skaters, staff \u2013 there\u2019s this real sense of community and support,\u201d he says, \u201cthen I come to Starbucks and I have this whole other community around me. Everyone\u2019s so supportive. There\u2019s been so many times when I\u2019ve needed to swap shifts around to accommodate my training. I couldn\u2019t have wished for a better team.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n\n

        \u201cFollow your dream with everything you\u2019ve got\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/body><\/blockquote>\n\n\n

        With the support of those around him, Oli has the confidence to dream big.<\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n\n

        “Ever since I was a kid, I\u2019ve dreamt of the Olympics,\u201d he says, \u201cbut since I\u2019ve started performing in shows I\u2019ve also imagined becoming a Disney on Ice <\/em>skater and having the opportunity to perform at theme parks and cruise ships around the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n

        They\u2019re ambitious goals, but they feel achievable.<\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n

        \u201cYou\u2019ve got to back yourself, because it\u2019s your life \u2013 don\u2019t let anyone tell you what to do. I was so close to just settling for a 9-5 job, but I knew that\u2019s not what I wanted. So I took a job at Starbucks: it\u2019s flexible, the people are amazing and it\u2019s a nice company to work for.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n

        For now, that flexibility gives him the freedom to chase every opportunity that comes his way \u2013 and he knows his team will be cheering him on wherever he goes.<\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n

        \u201cMy best advice is to follow your dream with everything you\u2019ve got.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n\n
