For refugees like Kimberlyn, a job promises more than just the stability of a paycheque \u2013 it\u2019s a crucial first step to finding community and feeling at home in a new country.<\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n<body><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Three years after first arriving in Spain, Kimberlyn is now a supervisor at Starbucks in Madrid, where she\u2019s found community and discovered a love for coffee. Here\u2019s how she got here.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n<body><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Starting over<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n<body><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI came to Spain in search of a more stable and safe life,\u201d Kimberlyn explains, \u201cin Venezuela the situation is very difficult \u2013 I decided to emigrate to build a better future for myself and my family.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n<body><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Venezuela is currently experiencing the largest displacement crisis in Latin American history. Many of the refugees have had to leave more than just their homes behind, becoming separated from their loved ones. Kimberlyn feels she\u2019s fortunate in this respect, \u201cmy whole family is here with me in Spain,\u201d she says, \u201cand they provide such incredible support.\u201d Still, she admits her first few months in Spain were far from easy.<\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n<body><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cPeople who have been forced to leave their homes and start again in a new country face challenges many of us can\u2019t even imagine,\u201d remarks Russell Butcher, Director &#8211; Strategic Programmes, Partner Resources EMEA, \u201cwhen it comes to entering the job market, it can be unfamiliar territory. Many refugees don\u2019t have an established professional network in their new country, so they can struggle to find job vacancies or connect with employers. That\u2019s why Starbucks partners with NGOs for our hiring programme, so we\u2019re able to reach refugees and help them to get that crucial foot in the door.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n<body><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kimberlyn was put in touch with Starbucks through one of those NGOs, where she was offered pre-employment training and a job interview. \u201cI learned about the company\u2019s values and the tasks I would be performing day-to-day, so I felt like I received a lot of support from day one.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n<body><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Building confidence and community, one cup at a time<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n<body><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When she found out she got the job, Kimberlyn was thrilled. \u201cI knew it was such a great opportunity for my professional development and that I would have stability,\u201d she says, \u201cwhat I felt most was excitement and hope.\u201d \u00a0<\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n<body><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Starbucks was more than a workplace, to Kimberlyn it was an opportunity to meet new people, build a new community, learn new skills, and find a purpose. \u201cWhat I enjoy most is the comradery and being a part of my team\u2019s growth,\u201d she says, \u201cI love being able to contribute and learn every day.\u201d \u00a0<\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n<body><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before putting on the green apron, Kimberlyn enjoyed drinking coffee \u2013 almost three years later, she\u2019s an expert. \u201cI didn\u2019t have as much knowledge about coffee as I do now. Since I\u2019ve started working at Starbucks my interest in coffee has grown tremendously and I\u2019ve learned to appreciate it in new ways,\u201d she says. Working with Starbucks she\u2019s gained a new education in coffee craft and her confidence continues to flourish. \u201cI was surprised by everything that is behind a cup of coffee: the origin, the cultivation processes, the varieties, and how all of that influences the taste.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n<body><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In her Starbucks partners, she found a new support system. \u201cEver since I first joined Starbucks, I\u2019ve had colleagues and leaders who have supported me, guided me every step of the way, and believed in me,\u201d Kimberlyn says, \u201cthanks to their support, today I\u2019m a supervisor.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n<body><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe understand that starting over in a new country can feel immensely isolating,\u201d says Russell, \u201cat Starbucks we see, time and again, that our partners form deep, meaningful friendships. Our stores aren\u2019t just places to work, they\u2019re a place to find connection and community. This sense of belonging is what allows people to thrive \u2013 especially those who have had to leave their community behind and start again.\u201d \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n<body><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cStarbucks has allowed me to grow, not only professionally but also personally,\u201d Kimberlyn adds, \u201cit has helped me to gain confidence, develop leadership skills, and integrate into a new society.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n<body><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cDon\u2019t give up\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n<body><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At Starbucks, Kimberlyn has discovered passion and purpose \u2013 now she hopes she can help others who are on the same journey. \u00a0\u201cI want to continue growing with the company, keep training, and take on new challenges\u201d she says, \u201cI would like, in the future, to be able to support others who are starting from scratch like I did.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n<body><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To others following in her footsteps, Kimberlyn has an inspiring message: \u201cdon\u2019t give up,\u201d she says, \u201calthough the road is not easy, every step is worth it.
