Beating thousands of other Starbucks baristas as all vying for the win, Summayyah saw off the competition to take the purple apron in London last week.

Taking place in our Starbucks Support Centre in Chiswick, London, the best baristas from our EMEA region battled over three intense days for the title of 2024 EMEA Barista Champion, and for the opportunity to represent the region in the first ever Global Barista Championships taking place next year.&nbsp;

Sumayyah, who represents Jordan, was competing at her first Barista Championships and has been working with Starbucks since she was 15, when she started as a part-time barista in Tampa, Florida. She moved to Jordan in 2019 to be closer to her family.

Straight after her win, Sumayyah said: “Oh my gosh! That is all I can really say. I haven’t processed this yet, you could pinch me – the emotions are overwhelming, in a good way.”

This year, the EMEA Barista Championship was open to 55,000 partners from 42 markets, with 37 of the most talented baristas showcasing the passion that goes into creating the perfect cup of coffee in last week’s final. Their skills were tested across several different rounds, including presenting a coffee tasting, creating picture perfect latte art, inventing their very own signature drink and, for the first time this year, taking part in a ‘store rush’. Dubbed the contestants favourite round, store rush recreates the everyday coffee rush, but the only difference being that the champions were timed and marked on how well they perfect the ‘customer’ order.

The purple apron was presented to Sumayyah by Vaso Papastamatiou, last year’s Champion, who also helped to judge the competition.

“It has meant so much to me to compete this year, and I would encourage every single partner across the globe to take part as it is an amazing experience, regardless of winning the purple apron,” Sumayyah continued. “I want every partner to be as excited as I am. I’ve taken so many photos and videos so when I return home I can share with all my partners.

As well as naming one crowned winner, who also took the title of the first-ever Values Winner by popular vote, this year’s competition also celebrates the incredible talent on display through naming round winners. A huge congratulations to the following partners:

All around Europe, the Middle East and Africa, there is a tangible buzz of anticipation as the 2024 EMEA Barista Championships prepare to take centre stage. This year's competition promises to be a landmark event, featuring a record-breaking number of national winners competing for the coveted purple apron, only one of which is awarded each year.&nbsp;

A Regional Showcase of Talent&nbsp;

The 2024 EMEA Barista Championships will bring together the finest baristas from around the region, with participants demonstrating their skills in a series of challenging tasks, including Storytelling, Latte Art, Signature Beverage alongside a brand-new mission: Store Rush. The competition is a testament to the artistry and passion that goes into crafting the perfect cup of coffee, alongside showcasing the extraordinary connections that partners (employees) create between themselves and their customers.&nbsp;

A Record-Breaking Field&nbsp;

One of the most exciting aspects of this year's competition is the unprecedented number of national winners. With 37 baristas, this year’s competition brings together more champions than ever before. This reflects the continuing power of the Barista Championships, and the importance of the skills being showcased, as it returns for the 11th year in Europe, ahead of the inaugural Global event happening in 2025.&nbsp;

Why This Year's Competition Will Be Unforgettable&nbsp;

There are several reasons to believe that the 2024 EMEA Barista Championships will be a truly memorable event. Firstly, the record-breaking number of participants ensures a high level of competition and a diverse range of expertise approaches. Secondly, the winner of the 2024 EMEA Barista Championships will represent partners across Europe, the Middle East and Africa in the first Global Barista Championships happening in mid-2025. Finally, the winner of the 2024 EMEA Barista Championships will travel to Rwanda as part of the Starbucks Origin Experience. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that takes partners to the heart of the story of coffee, experiencing the journey of the humble bean, beginning on the farms where it is grown, and building knowledge they can share with their fellow partners across the Region.&nbsp;

What It Takes to Be a Barista Champion&nbsp;

Becoming a Barista Champion requires a combination of talent, hard work, and a deep understanding of coffee. Successful competitors have a passion for their craft, a keen eye for detail, and the ability to think creatively under pressure. They must also be able to connect with their audience and judges, communicating their passion for coffee effectively.&nbsp;

The 2024 EMEA Barista Championships are poised to be a thrilling and unforgettable event. As the competition takes place from 25th-27th September, we can expect to see some of the most talented and innovative baristas in the world showcase their skills and push the boundaries of coffee artistry. 2024 EMEA Barista Championships

When James Martin first donned his green Starbucks apron in Belfast back in 2010, he could have never imagined that 13 years later he’d be the very first Green Apron Partner to win an Oscar. “Being the first person with Downs Syndrome to win an Oscar was a great feeling,” he adds. “It made history, and more importantly, it showed others with a variety of disabilities that it was possible. That really means something to them.” 

After showing a keen interest in acting, James joined a local drama group in 2007 and appeared in a number of theatre shows before being cast in his first film, Ups and Downs in 2019. “I’ve always enjoyed my job at Starbucks and just carried on as normal until the filming for An Irish Goodbye started. When that ended, I went back to Starbucks and picked up where I left off.”&nbsp;

Set in rural Northern Ireland, the short 2022 film follows James’ character, Lorcan, as he reconnects with his estranged brother Turlough after the untimely passing of their mother. He landed the role after one of the directors, Ross White, heard James on the radio with his dad, broadcaster Ivan. “Ross saw me in Marcella with Anna Friel in 2021 and then he approached me about the film,” James says. “The rest, as they say, is history.” The film went on to pick up the BAFTA Award for Best Short Film and the Academy Award for Best Live Action Short Film a year later in 2023.&nbsp;

“My Starbucks partners couldn’t believe we were nominated at first, they were over the moon for me! They gave me a big send off from both the Castle Lane and Victoria Square stores and ended up on TV and in the newspapers,” James says.&nbsp;&nbsp;

But what was it like jetting off to the other side of the world for the biggest night in Hollywood? “It was a great experience. It’s the most important night of the year for the movie industry. It was also lovely that my mum, Suzanne, and my uncle, Damian, were there with me. We couldn’t believe it when it was announced that we’d won.”&nbsp;

Although the night was unforgettable for obvious reasons, it was also special for James for another – it was his 31st birthday. So, during the team’s acceptance speech, Tom Berkley took a moment to encourage the crowd of A-listers – which included Janelle Monae, Florence Pugh and Barry Keoghan – to sing him happy birthday. “It was totally unexpected. A birthday treat like that was a lovely moment, and to have Colin Farrell give me a thumbs up is a very special memory!”&nbsp;

After celebrating in style, James returned to Belfast and is now busy working on other films. “I have another film coming out this year, Fairview Park, and there are three other projects being talked about,” he says. “I have never said that I wouldn’t come back to Starbucks, but at present I am just too busy and they understand that. They have always been very supportive of me and I appreciate that.” &nbsp;

His message to anyone considering joining Starbucks? “Go for it! I have always enjoyed my job and I’m sure you will too. My favourite part is the interaction with the customers. I always enjoyed being a part of a team because I was always treated the same as everyone else. The big thing is that all Starbucks partners – no matter their role – are treated equally.’&nbsp;&nbsp;

We could all do with a bit of love on Valentines Day, so this year Starbucks UK partners made it their mission to share just that. Between 10 and 14 February, Green Apron partners up and down the country surprised customers with personalised cups on selected orders both in-store and via Starbucks® Delivers – the perfect pick me up for the season of romance!

From romantic doodles to pun-packed notes of affirmation, alongside serving signature handcrafted Starbucks beverages, partners showed off their creative flair and sparked meaningful moments of joy and connection for customers and their loved ones.

“Valentines Day is a time that Starbucks partners look forward to every year,” says Barb Sladkova, Campaign Specialist at Starbucks UK (and the 2021 UK Barista Champion). “Making someone’s day by spreading a little bit of happiness and love – just by writing on a cup - is such a great feeling. It’s a special time that I really loved back when I worked in store – and Starbucks customers love it too.”

But the love didn’t stop there. On 10 February, two Starbucks stores invited local calligraphers to create a special collection of bespoke poems written on reusable cups for customers. While Jenni Liandu set up in London’s Tower Place store, Jess Watson spread the love in Edinburgh – with both talents asking customers for unique details about their Valentine before scribing heartfelt poems on their cups, crafting a unique feel-good gift each time.

To receive one of these everlasting mementos, customers needed to order the Golden Caramel White Hot Chocolate from the Starbucks Winter menu, or the limited edition Golden Caramel White Chocolate Frappuccino, crafted especially to celebrate Valentine’s Day. Both were a matcha-made in heaven for the returning (and widely beloved) Starbucks Valentines Cookie.&nbsp;

It’s the season of cheer, and earlier this month Starbucks UK welcomed the return of its festive give away to NHS staff across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. For the fourth consecutive year as part of Starbucks collaboration with NHS Charities Together, on 6 December, NHS workers were able to order a free Tall handcrafted beverage of their choice in-store.&nbsp;

With a busy day ahead, partners from the Starbucks offices in London headed into stores across the United Kingdom to join green apron partners in crafting and serving beverages to NHS staff. One of them was Liis Siirak, a Category Specialist at Starbucks UK who put her apron back on to help at a store on Tottenham Court Road. “The highlight of my day was being able to connect with not only customers, but my fellow partners too,” she said. “Before moving to the Starbucks EMEA Support Centre in 2021 I worked in stores, so I loved being able to make beverages I hadn’t made in years! Being part of such a special day reminded me of how we are all connected by a simple shared passion: our love of coffee.”&nbsp;

Returning behind the bar for such a big day may have brought back fond memories for partners like Liis, but for the NHS workers collecting their free beverages, the day was just as special. “It’s nice to have a few discounts or freebies for being a part of the NHS,” Gemma Bannister, a Midwife at University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust said at the Warren Street store. “It makes me feel appreciated, definitely. Especially after a night shift!”&nbsp;

“The free drink day is great, it’s so lovely!” Tracey Billington, a Senior Staff Nurse at Mortimer Market Centre said at a store on Tottenham Court Road. “I didn’t actually know about it until Sharon [a fellow nurse at Central and North West London NHS Foundation Trust] told me, ‘Come and grab your free drink!’. When I ordered, the barista asked if I wanted cream on top of my hot chocolate – I didn’t even realise that was an option!” she continued. “It’s cheered me up to no end.”&nbsp;

Whether a festive thank you in the form of a post-night shift Hazelnut Crunch Hot Chocolate (a new addition to the 2023 Holiday menu) or a classic Americano to get the day started, the gesture embodies the ongoing support Starbucks provides NHS Charities Together.&nbsp;But the NHS staff that came into Starbucks stores weren’t the only ones to enjoy a festive treat. &nbsp;

For the first time in the partnership, Starbucks donated Starbucks Frappuccino® Mocha Flavoured Chilled Coffees and Starbucks Toffee Nut Latte Premium Instant Coffee to staff at 19 hospitals in remote locations across the UK. Also for the first time, free Caramel Waffles were offered to NHS staff when they purchased a drink at a participating We Proudly Serve Starbucks® locations inside NHS hospitals. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Alex Rayner, General Manager at Starbucks UK, said: “We know how much NHS staff have enjoyed taking part in this special day and it’s something we look forward to year after year, so we are thrilled to see our partnership with NHS Charities Together flourish and our offer extend to more NHS workers than ever before. We look forward to building on this success so we can continue to give back to the communities we serve.” &nbsp;

The partnership sees Starbucks stores across the UK working with NHS Charities Together’s network of over 230 local NHS charities, which are based in every hospital, mental health, ambulance and community health service across the UK to help health services go further. NHS Charities Together has funded thousands of projects including vital mental health support for NHS staff, training for emergency volunteers, equipment and support for patients and community partnership programmes to prevent ill health and reduce pressure on NHS services.

At Starbucks we take actions to strengthen our communities by listening, supporting, investing and uplifting in meaningful ways – whether that’s the neighborhoods that host our stores, or the regions that grow our coffee. In late FY19 at Starbucks <a href="https://stories.starbucks.com/stories/2019/12000-starbucks-partners-gather-in-chicago-for-transformative-leadership-experience/">Leadership Experience</a>, we rolled out new resources and tools to empower 12,000 store leaders in the U.S. and Canada to serve their communities in ways that align to Starbucks global social impact priorities and are also locally relevant. We’ve seen success from this especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, with examples tracked <a href="https://stories.starbucks.com/stories/community/">here</a>.

Goal: Open Community Stores in 15 diverse, low to medium income urban communities in the U.S. by the end of 2020 We’ve invested globally in 16 Community Stores, 14 in the U.S., one in South Korea, and one in Thailand, which provide extra services and resources specific to their communities. In the U.S. in FY19, new stores opened in Dallas, Birmingham, Ala. and Jonesboro, Ga., with an expanded commitment in early 2020 to <a href="https://stories.starbucks.com/press/2020/starbucks-expands-commitment-in-underserved-communities-across-the-us/">operate 100 of them</a> by 2025.

Goal: Promote dialogue, empathy and stronger neighborhoods through by building relationships with law enforcement and first responders Building trusted relationships with law enforcement is an important part of sustaining a welcoming and safe environment in its stores. Starbucks has continued to build relationships and trust with law enforcement through alliances with national organizations as well as interactive <a href="https://stories.starbucks.com/stories/coffee-with-a-cop/">Coffee with a Cop</a> events.

Over 20 million meals donated in the U.S., with ~60% of eligible stores participating

Goal: Rescue 100% of food available to donate in all U.S. company-operated stores Starbucks FoodShare program in the U.S., which launched in 2016 in partnership with Feeding America, packages eligible unsold food and provides meals to food banks and mobile pantries. As of June 2020, we’ve now donated more than 25 million meals, with recent spikes as <a href="https://stories.starbucks.com/stories/2020/as-food-bank-need-spikes-starbucks-and-feeding-america-fight-hunger-together/">food bank needs</a> increase. We continue to learn from the many logistical challenges of ongoing perishable food delivery as we increase the scale of this program.

Internationally, similar programs exist in several markets, including a FoodShare launch in Canada in FY19 and food waste programs in 13 countries across EMEA.

Goal: Test an innovative community service model After a successful test in FY19, we expanded <a href="https://stories.starbucks.com/press/2019/the-starbucks-foundation-and-points-of-light-expand-innovative-service-model-in-20-cities-across-the-united-states/">The Starbucks Foundation Service Fellows</a> program, in which 100 Starbucks hourly store partners in 20 cities work 20 hours in their store each week while spending another 20 hours with a local nonprofit. The program is catalytic in communities that need support and provides an opportunity for Starbucks partners to build local nonprofit capacity and further serve their communities.

Goal: Strengthen local communities The Starbucks Foundation provided nearly $16 million in grants in FY19, including:

Internationally, The Starbucks Foundation invested in programs that promote opportunity, from refugee employment programs in Europe to youth-focused grants in partnership with the Alsea Foundation across multiple Latin American markets.

In the U.S., The Starbucks Foundation has a partnership with the American Red Cross supporting disaster preparedness, response and recovery in the U.S. Responses in FY19 included those to Hurricane Dorian and mass shootings in El Paso and Dayton.&nbsp;

The Starbucks Foundation’s&nbsp;<a href="https://stories.starbucks.com/press/2020/starbucks-expands-commitment-in-underserved-communities-across-the-us/">Neighborhood Grants</a>&nbsp;help build sustained local impact and inspire increased partner volunteerism with nonprofit organizations that work in our communities. This program was launched in FY19, inviting hundreds of store managers to nominate local nonprofit organizations that are meaningful in their communities. Similarly, The Starbucks Foundation awarded Greener Apron grants to multiple environmental organizations submitted by Greener Apron-certified partners.

The Starbucks Foundation’s&nbsp;<a href="https://stories.starbucks.com/press/2019/the-starbucks-foundation-2019-opportunity-for-all-grants/">Opportunity for All Grants</a>&nbsp;help support organizations creating pathways to lifelong opportunity and programs, which create job and training opportunities for people who may face barriers.

The Starbucks Foundation celebrated the holiday season by matching customer donations to eight nonprofit partners through the <a href="https://stories.starbucks.com/press/2018/starbucks-foundation-celebrates-holiday-season-by-matching-donations/">Match the Magic</a> campaign.
