Thursday 26th April: Starbucks today reveals results from the first six weeks of a three-month trial, evaluating the impact of a 5p paper cup charge in <a href="http://www.starbucks.co.uk/5pcup">35 stores</a>[1] across the City, West End, and west London. Results show reusable cup usage has increased by 156.6% in the trial stores, measured by the number of customers redeeming the 25p reusable cup discount.&nbsp;

Today Starbucks also announces a trial in 54 stores in London and Manchester to test alternative solutions for plastic straws. The trial, starting in May, will test two new straw alternatives, including a paper and biodegradable plastic straw.&nbsp; &nbsp;

Starbucks-commissioned research in February[2] found that almost half (48%) of people surveyed said they would carry a reusable cup, saving money and reducing waste. The percentage[3] of customers bringing in their own cup or tumbler since the launch of this cup charge trial has increased to 5.9% in the trial stores, up from 2.2% in the same stores before the trial began. The most significant change has been in the mornings with 8.4% of customers in trial stores now using a reusable cup or tumbler.

The proceeds from the 5p charge are being donated to environmental charity and behaviour change experts, Hubbub. At the end of the trial, Starbucks will share a conclusive report in collaboration with Hubbub, evaluating the overall impact of this three-month trial on customer behaviour and assessing its contribution to helping to reduce waste and encourage the use of reusable cups.

Since 1998 Starbucks has offered a reusable cup discount in the UK to encourage customers to bring in their own cup or tumbler. In 2014, Starbucks launched a £1 reusable cup to make it as easy as possible for customers to reuse at an accessible price.

Now those same customers can also help us to test innovative plastic straw alternatives, to further reduce our impact on the environment. &nbsp;As part of Starbucks ongoing commitment to environmental action and sustainability, British stores are also now signed up to Refill and will soon appear on the Refill app, which helps consumers find locations to refill their water bottles for free, whilst on the go.

Today, Starbucks announces the launch of a pioneering 5p paper cup charge trial in 35 stores*&nbsp;across the city, west end, and west London, to evaluate whether customers will reduce their use of single-use paper cups.

The proceeds from the 5p charge will be donated to environmental charity and behaviour change experts, Hubbub. Hubbub will help to track the impact of this three-month trial cup charge on customer behaviour, helping to reduce waste and encourage the use of reusable cups. Hubbub will also use the funds to support other innovative campaigns to reduce waste across London.&nbsp;

Throughout the three months, 5p will automatically be added on to any paper cup purchase in these 35 stores. To further reduce waste, baristas will also ensure all customers drinking in store are offered their drink in a ceramic cup.

Simon Redfern, vp communications, Starbucks Europe said “We’re hoping that this charge will remind customers to rethink their use of single-use plastic-lined cups, as it has with plastic bags. We’ve offered a reusable cup discount for 20 years, with only 1.8% of customers currently taking up this offer, so we’re really interested in working with Hubbub to see how this charge could help to change behaviour and help to reduce waste.”

Gavin Ellis,&nbsp;Co-Founder, Hubbub&nbsp;said: “Our early conversations with customers have shown an increased awareness of the need to reduce waste from single-use cups. Previous studies have shown that adding a charge on single-use cups is more effective than money off a reusable cup. We’re excited to be working on this initiative with Starbucks to find out if this is the case on the high street and to discover what else will encourage people to use reusable cups.”

Ever since we opened in the UK, 20 years ago, we have looked at ways to encourage and support the use of reusable cups.

We were first with the reusable cup incentive which we implemented in 1998 at 10p before upping it to 25p in 2008.

In 2016, as a way to heighten awareness and to promote reusability we extended the cup discount to 50p for a few months. We found that this did not move the needle in the way we thought it might. We now have 1.8% of our customers using reusable cups.

From 2014 we offered a £1 reusable cup to make it as easy as possible for customers to reuse at a very accessible price.

All that said, we recognise that there is growing concern about the number of single-use paper cups being used and that our customers are interested in ways that we can help them reduce, reuse and recycle.

To that end we will be exploring the impact that a cup charge may have in changing behaviour in addition to the measures we, and the whole industry, are taking on cup recycling.

In order to better understand how this could work we will trial and promote a 5p cup charge in 20 - 25 central London stores. We will investigate the impact of a 5p charge on a paper cup, coupled with prominent marketing of reusable cups, on customer behaviour. We will begin the trial in February and initially it will last for three months. All the money raised by the cup charge will be donated to environmental charity and behaviour change experts, Hubbub who will use the funds to run a comprehensive behaviour change study, helping us to understand how the public can be encouraged to choose reusable drink containers which are better for the environment.

We will share our findings with any interested parties before taking a view on next steps.

At the same time, we will redouble our efforts to ensure that drink-in customers are always offered a ceramic cup, thus cutting paper use even further.

Finally, we will continue to remind customers through our in-store marketing about the ongoing 25p cup discount and the benefits of going reusable.

We will begin the trial in February and initially it will last for three months. All the money raised by the cup charge will be donated to environmental charity and behaviour change experts, Hubbub who will use the funds to run a comprehensive behaviour change study.

Starbucks today announced that it has signed an agreement with the Alliance for Beverage Cartons and the Environment (ACE UK) to accelerate UK recycling of PE lined paper cups. Starbucks is one of fourteen businesses to sign the cross-industry collaboration, which will work towards delivering a long-term, nationwide paper cup recycling solution which complements and builds on the recycling activities achieved so far by Starbucks and the paper cup industry.

Using ACE UK’s extensive recycling expertise gained by running the beverage carton industry’s recycling programme, Starbucks and 13 other companies that have signed the agreement will fund an activity programme that will give many more people access to recycling for paper cups.

From 1st January 2018, all ACE UK bring banks will accept paper cups for recycling, delivering an additional 382 recycling points located in 97 local authorities across the UK, with a further 33 recycling points across an additional eight local authorities scheduled during the next phase

Cups from these recycling points will be processed at ACE UK’s recycling facility in Halifax

Drawing on its experience and existing relationships with local authorities, waste management organisations and recycling bodies, ACE UK will work to include cups in local authority kerbside collections. Currently 66% of local authorities collect beverage cartons at kerbside, in addition to those which collect through bring banks, and we hope to achieve similar levels of coverage for cups

ACE UK has been successfully running the beverage carton industry’s recycling programme for the last 10 years driving significant increases in carton recycling as part of its role as the UK beverage carton industry trade body. During this time, ACE UK has worked closely with local authorities and waste management companies so that today 92% of local authorities collect beverage cartons for recycling through either bring banks or kerbside collection.

Whilst our primary focus will remain on increasing beverage carton recycling, we believe our expertise, experience and existing relationships can help the paper cup industry create a step change in cup recycling. Whilst it is early days, we have a clear measured plan agreed and expect to see significant progress in cup recycling over the next two and a half years and beyond.”

Starbucks has been working in partnership with environmental organisation Conservation International for over 15 years, ensuring that 99% of Starbucks coffee is ethically sourced. This figure makes Starbucks the largest coffee retailer to reach this milestone, and the 9th September – the ninth day of the ninth month – was used to celebrate the 99% ethically sourced <a href="">coffee</a> in stores.

To mark the occasion, Starbucks Capucines store in Paris hosted stakeholders to learn more about the Starbucks coffee sourcing journey, the development of Starbucks C.A.F.E (Coffee and Farmer Equity) practices programme, progress to date and ambitions for the <a href="https://globalassets.starbucks.com/assets/9265e80751db48398b88bdf09821cc56.pdf">future</a>.

Béatrice Héraud from sustainability research company Novethic discussed the Sustainable Coffee Challenge. It’s through this challenge, Starbucks and Conservation International intend to work with other coffee companies to make coffee the world’s first sustainable agricultural product.

Kemal, a Parisian Starbucks partner who joined the annual Origin trip to a Rwandan coffee farm to see the impact that C.A.F.E practices has on the lives of our farmers first-hand led a tasting of the Rwandan Hingakawa Reserve coffee. The word "Hingakawa" is native Rwandan and translates into "Let's grow coffee." This Rwandan chant is also the name of an all-women led co-op Starbucks supports, where women are supported by growing coffee.

15th September 2017; Pentatonic, the newly launched furniture company whose products are made using post-consumer waste, today announces a partnership with Starbucks UK. As part of Starbucks plan to decrease its environmental footprint through innovative store design, this exciting collaboration will result in furniture being created from Starbucks store waste. The focus will be a sustainable redesign on its iconic ‘Bean Chair’, currently found in stores nationwide. The partnership is just one of several environmental design projects to be unveiled this September by Pentatonic in its pop-up store, during the London Design Festival.

Starbucks continues to invest in reducing its impact on the environment including building Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certified greener stores by preserving water and energy, training its partners (employees) in energy efficiency, and minimising waste by reuse and recycling, including paper cups. The new bespoke cup collection trays have been developed using waste Starbucks cups and will be visible at the Pentatonic pop-up bar as well as additional Starbucks stores currently offering a cup recycling scheme.

The partnership with Pentatonic marks a major step in Starbucks commitment to reducing impact on the environment.

“This fantastic collaboration with Pentatonic shows how working together we can find solutions that positively impact the environment. This partnership gives us new insights to achieve our ambition of environmental store design, including new routes for collecting waste and how we can give this post-consumer waste a second life in our stores. Pentatonic continues to exhibit its ambitious commitment to achieving the realisation of the circular economy, in every day consumer, design and trend culture.

Quickly establishing itself as a design and material technology pioneer, Pentatonic has recreated the iconic Starbucks Bean Chair from upcycled textiles, made using only waste plastic. The upholstery, cushioning, frame and legs of these chairs were once plastic bottles and plastic cups.

“Partnering with Starbucks to build furniture and materials out of their own waste is a major demonstration of how scale can be a force for good. By taking the iconic Bean Chair design and re-engineering it using trash, it further illustrates the unlimited application possibilities of post-consumer waste. With Pentatonic’s technology and Starbucks commitment to a greener future, the potential impact of our partnership is truly significant for the planet,” said Jamie Hall, Co-Founder/CMO, Pentatonic.

To launch the partnership, Pentatonic and Starbucks have also collaborated on a Starbucks pop-up bar constructed entirely from its own waste materials. This bespoke Starbucks bar will reside within Pentatonic’s Shoreditch pop-up, opening tomorrow (15 September) serving Nitro Cold Brew and Chemex brewed coffee – with all proceeds donated to Clean up Britain. 

The bar features the specially produced Bean Chair, as well as a counter top and tables made from Starbucks recycled paper cups and a backdrop made up of 1,200 tiles made in London from plastic cups and coffee cup lids. The tiles are formed in Pentatonic’s revolutionary Trashpresso mobile recycling factory (Pentatonic.com/London) which will also be showcased at London Design Festival at Somerset House between 18 – 24 September.

When the Pentatonic pop-up space closes (October 12) all the materials used, and the Bean Chairs, will find new homes in Starbucks stores in Central London. This will mark the beginning of upcycled materials being used in future store designs.

8th September 2017; Starbucks is celebrating its leading position of serving 99 percent ethically-sourced coffee with its partners (employees) in stores across Europe by writing ’99’ on cups on the 9th September. Starbucks is the largest coffee retailer to have 99 percent of its coffee supply chain verified as ethically-sourced, working in partnership with Conservation International.

The cornerstone of Starbucks sourcing practices is its C.A.F.E (Coffee and Farmer Equity) Practices programme, which were developed over 15 years ago, with Conservation International. The practices form a set of growing and buying guidelines that help farmers supplying Starbucks to produce coffee in a sustainable and fair way, and has already impacted over one million farmers and workers across four continents.

C.A.F.E Practices set out guidelines that mean any coffee purchased by Starbucks must meet the following standards:

Economic – a transparent supply chain where coffee suppliers must be able to provide evidence of payments to coffee farmers

Social Responsibility – Ensure safe and fair working and living conditions for workers and ensure access to medical facilities and children have access to education

Quality- All Arabica coffee must meet Starbucks high quality standards

Environment Leadership – Help preserve and protect the farming land and water bodies

On 9th September, participating store teams in Britain, France, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Austria, Greece, Cyprus, Portugal and South Africa are celebrating Starbucks leadership in ethical sourcing by writing 99 on customers’ cups. In London, Starbucks store manager and artist Becca Turner, has also decorated Starbucks reusable cups and created an impressive mural store window display to mark this special day.

Leftover food in stores to be sold at 50% discount; proceeds to support global fight against child hunger

LONDON; 30 August 2017 – Today, Starbucks UK introduced a new initiative to address the issue of food waste in the retail industry, as well as the issue of global hunger. From today, during the last hour of trading in more than 350 company-operated Starbucks stores across Britain, any food nearing expiry that would otherwise be thrown out will be sold at a 50% discount. Proceeds from the sale of each item will in turn be donated to Action Against Hunger, a leading humanitarian organisation, to help fund its projects helping malnourished children worldwide.

The expansion of this new programme comes after a successful trial in 16 Starbucks stores in Manchester earlier this year. Feedback from customers and partners (employees) was overwhelmingly positive, and over an 11-week period, £1,500 was donated to Action Against Hunger from food sales.

Starbucks store managers carefully manage their food product orders online, allocating precise items per store, which helps to reduce waste. However, on the occasions when fresh items would be thrown away, store managers will now be able to display labels offering a half price discount for an hour before closing, with proceeds donated to Action Against Hunger. This innovative programme overcomes the legal and regulatory barriers around the safe transportation of fresh food items with a short remaining shelf-life, particularly for Starbucks stores, which typically see a comparatively lower volume of food waste than other restaurant retailers.

Starbucks gives away a limited number of free reusable cups in participating stores across Great Britain, in activity supported by Clean Up Britain

LONDON, 22nd April 2017; To mark Earth Day on 22 April, Starbucks is encouraging customers to get into the habit of using a reusable cup when they visit stores by giving away over 18,500 reusable cups, accompanied by a new cup sleeve design, with a ‘Reuse to Reduce’ waste message.* This activity is supported by waste campaigners Clean Up Britain and aims to drive awareness, as well as encourage behaviour change for customers.

Starbucks is committing to leading on solutions to help reduce its impact on the environment, including with paper cups. This includes exploring ways to collect uncontaminated paper cups to enable effective recycling and testing new recyclable paper cup options to meet safety standards.

This reusable cup giveaway and awareness message on cup sleeves, accompanies the long-standing 25p discount offered to customers using a reusable cup - an incentive Starbucks has had in place for over a decade.

“Clean Up Britain champions long term sustainable change and we are extremely supportive of Starbucks efforts to promote reusable cups, and understand what prompts people to make the switch,” said John Read, founder of Clean Up Britain. “It won’t be easy - and will take time - but it’s great to see one of the world’s biggest coffee companies seeking solutions to this challenge.”

London, 27 January 2017 – Today, Starbucks new paper cup recycling bins arrive in stores as part of an ongoing strategy to help reduce paper cup waste. An initial 20 stores in Central and West London will offer the paper cup bin encouraging ‘from-street-to-in-store’ disposal to ensure more paper cups are recycled. The arrival of Starbucks new cup recycling bins follows a successful back of house trial run in partnership with waste management provider, Veolia, since last spring which confirmed the requirements for successful recycling of paper cups.

Created for Starbucks, the bins are designed to help enable effective recycling. Each bin features clearly indicated sections for consumers to tip away excess liquid, remove the sleeve and lid and then stack their cup separately. From here the cup can be recycled through the store’s waste collection, rather than relying on local recycling facilities.

Starbucks is encouraging all ‘to go’ customers to return any take-away paper cups back into store, not only Starbucks cups.

The news today also follows the announcement that Starbucks is supporting the Hubbub Square Mile Challenge, which will see a variety of businesses and Hubbub introducing coffee cup recycling facilities across the city in London in April 2017.

“This new bin design is a significant way to test not only how cups can be recycled in our stores but also how people will embrace the new behaviour. Paper cup waste is a complex but important issue across the industry," said Simon Redfern, vice president communications for Starbucks Europe. "To help tackle it, our strategy focuses on increasing ways we can reduce, reuse and recycle and these new bins provide a way for customers to help us make a difference. We’re asking customers to help us test this new approach so we can learn what works.”

Beyond the introduction of the new bins, Starbucks continues to offer its industry-leading 25p discount to customers using a reusable cup, an initiative Starbucks has had in place for over a decade.

Starbucks business customers can also recycle their paper cups via a ‘post-back’ Cup Care scheme offered by waste management partner, Veolia.

The holidays are traditionally a time of giving. For Starbucks in Great Britain, the Netherlands, France, Switzerland and Austria, they’re also about supporting those who give.

Starbucks Red Cup Cheer campaign is currently taking place across Europe through December 24. During this period, a portion of Starbucks holiday beverage sales in Great Britain, the Netherlands and France will be directed to select nonprofit organizations. Starbucks in Switzerland and Austria will be making donations and contributing volunteers to charitable organizations.

In Great Britain, <a href="https://www.neighbourly.com/campaign/58009e77c7ac880a982543a3">250 charities</a> nominated by Starbucks partners (employees) and customers will receive Red Cup grants of up to 1,000 pounds. The charities are asking customers to “Cheer” for them on Twitter by following, tweeting and posting their support using the hashtag #RedCupCheer. The nonprofits with the most social media activity – or cheers – will receive a larger share of the funds raised by Starbucks, which will donate 5 pence for every holiday beverage sold between December 1-24. All participating organizations will receive at least 500 pounds.

“Red Cup Cheer is all about celebrating the local charities that mean most to our customers and partners,” said Simon Redfern, vice president of Communications for Starbucks Europe, Middle East and Africa Region. “We’ve seen fantastic support for Red Cup Cheer and we hope the charities involved enjoy taking part and receiving recognition for the wonderful work they do in our communities.”

Starbucks, collaborates with Neighbourly, which connects charities and causes with companies and people. Last year, Starbucks and Neighbourly made donations to 200 nonprofits through the Red Cup campaign. Over the three-year history of the campaign, 350,000 pounds have been donated to 520 UK charities. The following organizations are supported by the Red Cup Cheer in additional countries across the EMEA region:

The Netherlands – The Starbucks Red Cup Cheer beneficiary in the Netherlands is <a href="https://www.vluchtelingenwerk.nl/">VluchtelingenWerk</a>, which provides support to refugees and asylum seekers. Starbucks partners will help the organization volunteering and raising awareness, while Starbucks donates 5 cents from the purchase of any holiday drink served through December 24.

France – <a href="http://www.protection-civile.org/">La Protection Civile</a>, which provides support for people affected by emergencies and natural disasters in Europe and North Africa, will receive 5 cents from the purchase of any holiday drink purchased in France.

Switzerland – <a href="http://www.wunderlampe.ch/">Wunderlampe</a>, the Red Cup Cheer charity partner in Switzerland, makes wishes come true for chronically ill and disabled children. In addition to a charitable donation, Starbucks partners will hold a celebration with Wunderlampe personnel and help raise awareness and funds for their work.

Austria – Starbucks partners in Austria are supporting <a href="https://www.gruft.at/">Caritas Gruft</a>, a nonprofit that provides care for homeless people in Vienna. Their support ranges from warm food, hot showers, clean clothes and a safe place to sleep to long-term assistance from the charity’s team of social workers, psychiatrists, psychotherapists and civilian volunteers. In addition to a charitable donation, Starbucks partners will volunteer at Caritas Gruft, cooking dinner on December 21 and collecting clothes for beneficiaries.

Aaron Swift returned from an emotional four-day journey in Rwanda with one goal in mind.

“I wanted to find a way to help Rwandan farmers and educate my peers at the same time,” said Swift, a four-year partner (employee) and shift supervisor at a Starbucks store in Manchester, England.

Swift visited Rwanda in 2014 as part of <a href="https://news.starbucks.com/news/an-emotional-return-to-rwanda-for-the-starbucks-origin-experience">Starbucks Origin Experience</a>, where select partners travel to coffee-growing regions to gain a greater understanding and appreciation for farmers who grow coffee. Having witnessed a cow-giving ceremony while in the city of Kigali, Swift realized providing a cow was an ideal means of giving back to the farmers.

“A cow means that farmers can invest back into their livelihood and in their community,” said Swift. “They can use milk for drinking and selling, the manure to increase the crop yield, and the animal as collateral for a loan to buy farming materials.”

After searching for the ideal charity to help with this endeavor, Swift and fellow partners selected <a href="https://www.sendacow.org/">Send a Cow</a>, which works in seven African countries to provide training, tools, seeds and livestock to help those in need lift themselves out of poverty. With the organization in place, Swift invited Starbucks stores in the UK North West to accept donations for a two-week trial in 2014.

Starbucks UK raised enough money to fund the equivalent of 11 cows in the first year. Encouraged by the results, the company initiated <a href="https://www.sendacow.org/cowproject">The Big Cow Project</a> in 2015 with more than 700 stores participating and an end result of nearly £40,000 (nearly $60,000 USD) in donations. As an added bonus, the total raised will be matched by the UK government to support Send a Cow’s projects in both Rwanda and Ethiopia.

“The Starbucks Big Cow Project was led by one young partner with the passion to make a difference,” said Rhys Iley, vice president operations, Starbucks UK. “Partners across the country have been so inspired to raise funds for farmers in Rwanda and the teams have really enjoyed getting behind this worthwhile cause.”

“We have been inspired by the enthusiasm of Starbucks partners and their customers,” said Simon Barnes, chief executive of Send a Cow. “Thanks to their fantastic support we have been able to spread the work of Send a Cow to high streets across the UK and Ireland and use the daily Starbucks habit to save lives and ensure futures, not for one day, or even one week, but forever.”

Swift is overwhelmed by Starbucks customers’ generosity.

“It feels great to not only provide cows for Rwandan farmers, but also help so many Rwandan communities,” he said.

The campaign motivated many partners in addition to Swift, most notably <a href="https://news.starbucks.com/news/partner-store-chalk-designs">Becca Turner</a>, a store manager in London. Due to her exceptional fundraising efforts, Turner was chosen to visit Rwanda this month to witness Send a Cow in action and report back to Starbucks partners about the impact of The Big Cow Project.

“I am incredibly lucky to have the chance to see Send a Cow’s work first-hand in beautiful Rwanda,” said Turner. “This was not achieved alone. It is through my hard-working store partners that I’m able to go and experience something as incredible as this.”

Also taking Swift’s lead, a group of Starbucks partners in Germany have raised enough money to fund their first cow, and the initiative is set to go wider in Europe this year.

Next for Swift is to focus on his work as one of four coffee ambassadors in the UK. He will help coordinate education events for partners as well as the local <a href="https://news.starbucks.com/news/starbucks-coffee-masters-share-passion-for-coffee">Coffee Master Program</a>.

“I’ve learned so much from this experience,” added Swift. “I’m sure the campaign will be a yearly tradition for some time to come.”
