Starbucks and environmental charity,&nbsp;Hubbub, today announce&nbsp;the first winners of The Cup Fund –&nbsp;the U.K.’s largest grant fund to bolster and scale paper cup recycling. Twelve programmes have been selected to receive grants of between £50,000&nbsp;and&nbsp;£100,000, all funded by the Starbucks 5p cup charge, to each develop long-term infrastructure. The funding is expected to have a significant impact:

The ability to recycle paper cups has increased over the last two years and there is now enough capacity in the U.K. to recycle all paper cups used. However, because cups have a plastic lining that stops hot drinks from leaking, they need to be collected separately from other paper goods. As a result, specific cup recycling points are needed as well as clear communication to help the public recycle easily. The Cup Fund was established to meet this need and is financed by&nbsp;Starbucks, from the 5p charge introduced on paper cups in 2018, to encourage customers to increase their use of reusable cups.

All cups collected by the funded projects will be recycled within the U.K. into new products including paper bags and greetings cards. These products will be manufactured locally to reduce travel and some of those products will go back into the locations where the cups were collected to create a closed loop.

The judging panel for The Cup Fund chose ambitious, large scale projects from organisations seeking support to make much needed improvements to infrastructure to collect and recycle paper cups. The winning projects are:

As well as financial funding, each project will receive ongoing guidance and advice from Hubbub to enable them to best spend the funds to deliver the greatest long-term impact.&nbsp;The charity has been at the forefront of coffee cup recycling campaigns for a number of years, bringing together large-scale collaborations of retailers, cup manufacturers, local authorities and other stakeholders to test and scale cup recycling in Manchester, London and Leeds.

The Cup Fund forms part of a wider partnership between Hubbub and Starbucks. In June this year, they joined forces to launch the first airport reusable cup trial in partnership with Gatwick to help cut paper cup waste and address throw-away culture. Starbucks has seen that education of passengers in travel hubs is key to helping increase the use of reusable cups—and through behaviour change studies such as the Gatwick trial, Starbucks and its industry partners are able to better understand consumer behaviour, break down barriers preventing the use of reusable cups and bring about meaningful behaviour change at scale. The Cup Fund is financed by&nbsp;Starbucks, who introduced a 5p charge on paper cups in 2018, to encourage customers to increase their use of reusable cups.&nbsp;

The instore charge has seen reusable cup use increase from 1.8% nationwide to over 5% of all hot drinks sold. In store cup recycling is also offered in over 375 Starbucks stores across Britain, in a scheme that means any brand of cup can be brought back to be recycled.

Today, Starbucks and Hubbub are launching the first airport reusable cup trial in partnership with Gatwick Airport. The trial will offer drop off points for Starbucks reusable cups throughout the international airport’s South Terminal to help cut paper cup waste and address throw-away culture.

This trial aims to offer a new approach to reuse, helping customers reduce disposable cup usage within closed environments such as travel hubs. Customers at the Starbucks store, which is operated in partnership with SSP, will have the option to borrow a free reusable cup for their drink instead of using a paper cup, which they can then drop off at one of five ‘Cup Check-In’ points throughout the airport before they board their flight. 

Over 5.3 million of the seven million paper cups used at Gatwick each year are already being recycled but as recycling requires empty cups to be placed in the dry recycling bins, Starbucks and Hubbub have identified the potential to increase reusable cup options as well to limit the number of cups used in travel hubs where on-the-go packaging is prevalent. 

The aim of the trial is to put 2,000 reusable Starbucks cups in circulation throughout Gatwick’s South Terminal, which could drastically reduce the number of paper cups being used each day. For example, if only 250 customers opted for reusable each day, it could see over 7,000 paper cups saved in one month.

Jaz Rabadia MBE, UK Senior Manager of Energy and Sustainability at Starbucks, “The purpose of working with Hubbub and Gatwick is to help create a new culture of reuse on-the-go by giving customers the option of a reusable cup instead of paper for free. We are optimistic that the ‘Cup Check-In’ points around the airport will provide enough places for customers to return their cups on the way to their gate, but also recognise this might not for everyone. Our goal is to save 7,000 disposable cups over the course of the month to find out the best ways to drive reuse where it is typically harder to do so – such as airports.”

Rachel Thompson, Sustainability Lead, Gatwick Airport said: “There is strong public support for measures to reduce waste and we are delighted to support one of our retailers with an innovation that can help travellers do that. We are looking forward to seeing how the trial goes and what we can learn to improve the solution.&nbsp;

This trial fits well with Gatwick’s own circular economy ethos, which sees us utilise as many recovered resources as possible from within the airport estate.&nbsp; By redesigning and investing in new waste collection and sorting facilities, and also in training to raise awareness about our journey toward zero waste, we have so far managed to hit a waste recycling and reuse rate of 70% this year. This includes all empty coffee cups and plastics and we also send zero waste to landfill.”

We want to find out whether people will get on board with reusing cups, if we make it easy and convenient. What we learn here will provide valuable insight into how to deploy a reusable trial in not only other airports, but many other environments.”

This trial is part of Starbucks and Hubbub’s on-going partnership and commitment to reducing paper cup waste. During the last hour of trading, Starbucks stores in Spain will offer any fresh food nearing expiry at half price

100 per cent of the proceeds will be donated to Action Against Hunger, a leading humanitarian organisation, to fund its childhood malnutrition projects worldwide

Starbucks Spain has become the fifth European country to partner with Action Against Hunger, as the company look to expand efforts to tackle food waste in the retail industry, while at the same time fighting hunger in communities around the world. The programme also runs at stores in the United Kingdom, Austria, the Netherlands and Switzerland.

During the last hour of trading across the nearly 130 Starbucks stores in Spain, any fresh food nearing expiry will be sold at a 50 per cent discount. All proceeds from these sales will be donated to Action Against Hunger to fund childhood malnutrition prevention and treatment projects in nearly 50 countries across the world. 

In stores across Britain, the initiative has seen over £175,000 donated to Action Against Hunger and contributed to a reduction in food waste from stores by a third since January 2018.

Álvaro Salafranca, CEO of Starbucks Spain and Portugal, said: “Handling a challenge like food waste is no simple task, but we’re proud to have developed an effective and long-term programme. Following the success of the pilot project at 30 stores in Barcelona, we’re happy to be able to expand the programme to all stores in Spain. We are very excited to partner with Action Against Hunger on this initiative which allows us to help alleviate the impact of food poverty in the world.”

Carmen Gayo, Director, Communications and Fundraising for Action Against Hunger, said: “For our organisation, the food and restaurant sector is a natural ally. Starbucks not only provides us a chance to raise funds for our projects aimed at the recovery of malnourished children with this initiative, but also allows us to spread awareness for our cause by reaching millions of customers through the hundreds of outlets the brand has in Spain with the perfect message to get them directly involved in our project. The company and Starbucks customers are now a part of the generation that can end hunger.” Throughout the month of May, Starbucks will provide an additional incentive to get customers involved and spread awareness of the food waste programme. For every social media post on either Facebook or Instagram, the company will donate an additional €1 to Action Against Hunger– customers simply have to share a photo of the campaign sticker in-store.

Starbucks and environmental charity, Hubbub, have launched The Cup Fund, to kickstart paper cup recycling programmes in locations across the U.K. The Cup Fund will support at least 10 large-scale recycling programmes, offering grants of between £50,000 and £100,000 based on the specific needs of each application to develop long term infrastructure and ensure cups are collected and sent for recycling. 

The ability to recycle paper cups has increased over the last two years and there is now enough capacity in the U.K. to recycle all paper cups used. However, because cups have a plastic lining that stops hot drinks from leaking, they need to be collected separately from other paper goods. As a result, specific cup recycling points are needed as well as clear communication to help the public recycle easily.

Today’s launch of The Cup Fund invites applications from a range of organisations wanting to increase infrastructure but lacking funding, including local authorities, recycling companies, property owners and social enterprises to come forward. 

Trewin Restorick, CEO and Founder of Hubbub,&nbsp;said: “We know that local authorities and building managers are committed to achieving their recycling targets but with increased strain on their budgets, investing in infrastructure is difficult. The launch of The Cup Fund with Starbucks means we will be able to collect cups in significant volumes in areas where there may not have been any drop off points before. We’re looking for ambitious, large-scale projects that will transform cup recycling in high footfall areas.”

The Cup Fund is financed by Starbucks and builds on the existing partnership with Hubbub. In 2018 Starbucks introduced a 5p charge on paper cups, to encourage customers to increase their use of reusable cups and avoid the charge. 

All proceeds are donated to Hubbub to carry out environmental projects that increase recycling as well as behaviour change studies to understand more about consumer behaviour, including the barriers that stop more people using a reusable cup.&nbsp; 

The instore charge has seen reusable cup use increase from 1.8% nationwide to over 5% of all hot drinks sold. Instore cup recycling is also offered in over 350 Starbucks stores across Britain, in a scheme that means any brand of cup can be brought back to be recycled.

Winning schemes will be selected by an independent panel consisting of experts in recycling and infrastructure, including The Local Authority Recycling Advisory Committee (LARAC) and the Chartered Institution of Wastes Management (CIWM). As well as financial funding, Hubbub will provide ongoing guidance and advice to the winning programmes to help them deliver infrastructure with a long-term benefit. Starbucks, McDonald’s and other industry leaders partner in pre-competitive collaboration to push the boundaries of sustainable design and find innovative cup solutions.

The NextGen Consortium, convened by Closed Loop Partners,&nbsp; announced today the winners of the NextGen Cup Challenge – an open-sourced, global innovation challenge to redesign the fiber to-go cup and create a widely recyclable and/or compostable cup.

After a rigorous four-month review process by an esteemed group of judges including NextGen Consortium business leaders, as well as experts in recycling, composting and packaging, the Challenge narrowed the nearly 500 submissions from over 50 countries down to 12 winners.

These 12 winning solutions — broadly categorized into innovative cup liners, new materials, and reusable cup service models — have the potential to turn the 250 billion fiber to-go cups used annually from waste into a valuable material in the recycling system.

“This is a notable milestone to achieve our aspiration of sustainable coffee, served sustainably which is a particular passion for our over 350,000 Starbucks partners,” said&nbsp;John Kelly, Senior Vice President of Global Public Affairs and Social Impact at Starbucks. “We’re a founding partner of the NextGen Consortium because we believe it will take the scale and influence of many global companies to make recyclable, compostable to-go cups an industry standard rather than the exception.”

Many of the largest players in the food and beverage industry have united within the NextGen Consortium, making it a unique pre-competitive collaboration. Starbucks and McDonald’s were early investors and founding partners of the NextGen Consortium, with The Coca-Cola Company, Yum! Brands, Nestlé and Wendy’s joining as supporting partners. The World Wildlife Fund acts as an advisory member of the Consortium, and OpenIDEO is an innovation partner. Collectively representing a significant portion of the cups market, these brands are not only demonstrating their commitment to ending cup waste and driving innovation in packaging, but also accelerating the paths to global scale.

The NextGen Challenge winner solutions are advancing the transition to a more circular economy where materials are continuously cycled and reliance on raw materials is reduced.&nbsp; “By working across the entire value chain and engaging key stakeholders, winners of the NextGen Cup Challenge are tackling a complex problem in a holistic way, sending valuable material back into the supply chain – benefiting people, the planet, and businesses,” said&nbsp;Erin Simon, Director, Sustainability R&amp;D, World Wildlife Fund.

Up to six winners will enter the NextGen Circular Business Accelerator, where they’ll gain access to a network of experts, business and technical resources and testing opportunities to ensure these innovations can successfully scale to serve the needs of the industry and maintain the performance standards we know and trust.

The Challenge is just the first stage of the NextGen Consortium’s three-year effort.&nbsp; Next, the NextGen Circular Business Accelerator, with testing and piloting opportunities, will help solutions get onto the shelf.&nbsp; Further, the Consortium is working with suppliers, recyclers and composters to ensure that the winning solutions can get successfully recovered for the highest value. The Consortium will work together to support the needs of the recycling and composting system and identify ways to make it easy for consumers to choose the right bin.

These companies are rethinking the polyethylene plastic liners in cups that can currently make to-go cups difficult to recycle.

Plans to launch food waste programme in four additional European countries

British stores have raised £125,000 for Action Against Hunger since programme launched last year

November 8, 2018 – Today, Starbucks announced its partnership with Action Against Hunger will expand to Austria, the Netherlands, Switzerland and France, increasing the company’s efforts to tackle food waste in the retail industry, while at the same time fighting hunger in communities in need around the world.

The partnership has been extended following last year’s launch of a programme combating food waste in Starbucks nearly 350 company-owned stores across Britain, which has now raised £125,000 for Action Against Hunger.

Beginning today, during the last hour of trading at Starbucks 85 company-owned stores across Austria, the Netherlands and Switzerland, any food nearing expiry that would otherwise be thrown out will be sold at a 50 percent discount. The entire sale of each item will be donated to Action Against Hunger, a leading humanitarian organisation, to help fund its projects that aid malnourished children worldwide. A similar programme addressing food waste and supporting Action Against Hunger will debut in France in 2019.

Starbucks store managers carefully manage their food product orders online, allocating precise items per store, which helps to reduce waste. However, on the occasions when fresh items would be thrown away, store managers will now display labels offering a half-price discount during the last hour before closing. One hundred percent of each sale’s proceeds are donated to Action Against Hunger.

Robert Lynch, vice president retail operations, Starbucks Europe Middle East and Africa, said: “Tackling a challenge like food waste is not an easy one, but we’re proud to have raised £125,000 for Action Against Hunger over the past year. Three-month London trial showed 126% increase in reusable cup use by customers

Environmental charity Hubbub will continue to use proceeds on projects to reduce plastic pollution across the UK

Tuesday 10th July: &nbsp;Starbucks today announces that it will test a 5p paper cup charge across all 950 stores in Britain from Thursday 26th July, following a three-month trial in London. The charge will see all stores add 5p on to the cost of any drink purchased in a paper cup in a bid to further encourage customers to bring in a reusable cup.&nbsp; Customers using reusable cups already receive a longstanding 25p discount off any Starbucks drink, aimed at reducing paper cup waste. The announcement comes after positive trial results showed a 126% uplift in the use of reusable cups in participating stores, measured by the number of customers redeeming the reusable 25p cup discount.&nbsp;

Throughout the three-month trial Starbucks worked with environmental charity and behavioural change experts Hubbub, who compiled a report evaluating the overall impact of the charge on customer behaviour. The report shows that the percentage of customers bringing in their own cup or tumbler increased in the trial stores from 2.2% before the trial to 5.8% during the trial.[i] Mornings see the highest volume of customers going reusable, with 8% of all hot drinks served in reusable mugs or tumblers.

The results indicate that a nationwide roll out of a 5p charge with supporting instore communications and staff training would have an impact on reducing paper cup use. Starbucks is continuing to work with the industry to share the findings of this trial charge, as well as leading in innovations to support reducing plastics waste, and finding alternatives to single-use paper cups. Earlier this year Starbucks committed $10m to develop a fully recyclable and compostable hot cup in partnership with Closed Loop Partners, through the NextGen Cup Challenge.&nbsp;

Starbucks policy is to serve all drink in-store customers with ceramic cups, and all company-owned stores in Britain offer paper cup recycling. Earlier this week, the company has announced plans to eliminate single-use plastic straws globally by 2020, making a new Starbucks strawless lid a standard on all iced coffee, tea and espresso beverages. This new lid has already launched in 150 stores across Europe, Middle East and Africa and will reach all stores through a phased rollout. Starbucks is also introducing straws made from alternative-materials, including paper or PLA compostable plastic, for Frappuccino blended beverages or customers who prefer or need a straw. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Martin Brok, president, Starbucks Europe, Middle East and Africa said: “We saw encouraging results from the first three months of this trial with Hubbub, and what stood out to us was the positive response we had from our partners (employees) and customers who continue to push us to innovate and find ways to reduce waste. Extending this to all our stores across Britain is an exciting step and we’re hoping this charge will remind customers to rethink their use of single-use plastic as it has with plastic bags.”

The funds raised from the 5p cup charge to all stores in Britain will continue to support recycling and sustainability efforts with Hubbub, with a focus to reduce plastic pollution across the UK and prompt consumers to rethink how we use plastic.

Gardeners are being encouraged to call on the help of their local Starbucks store and pick up the stores’ used coffee grounds to help boost crops growth.

The Allotments &amp; Gardens Council UK are sharing the benefits of using coffee grounds on plants with their members across Britain, who can visit their local Starbucks store and pick up free used coffee grounds.

According to the Allotments &amp; Gardens Council UK, used coffee grounds provide a great, long-term way to enrich soil and eliminate the need for other fertilisers, and they can also speed up the composting process – making them the perfect natural material to use in private gardens, allotments and outdoor spaces.

Starbucks ‘Grounds For Your Garden’ offers an effective way to reuse waste material - even the packaging is reused when baristas scoop used the coffee grounds into empty bags&nbsp; used to deliver the espresso beans. &nbsp;Customers can pick up a free bag of used coffee grounds, which will be located by the checkout in their local Starbucks store, or they can ask their barista.&nbsp;

The Allotments &amp; Gardens Council UK support societies across the UK. Jeff Bond, board member for The Allotments and Gardens and Council UK, commented: “Our members are always looking for new ways to boost their crop growth and this scheme really benefits gardeners in local communities who may not have access to this natural fertiliser. Used coffee grounds are high in nitrogen so they are fantastic for plant growth and we can use them for growing a range of plants on the allotments from, tomatoes to marrows and even pumpkins!”

Today, we are proud to share news from Starbucks Spain which has launched two new food waste projects in stores across Madrid and Barcelona.

<a href="https://www.hofo.es/">Hope Food</a> is an entrepreneurial social scheme that redistributes unsold fresh food to two charities in Madrid at the end of each day. Mensajeros de la Paz and Cottolengo work with the homeless and disabled community as well as families in need.

Since launching a trial with Hope Food at the beginning of 2018, 2,300 kilograms of food has been donated to date, creating more than 1,800 full meals for those supported by the charity. &nbsp;

Stores in Barcelona have teamed up with <a href="https://www.wesaveeat.com/">WeSAVEat</a>, a mobile app where users can buy surplus food from stores at a reduced price at the end of each day. Through the WeSAVEat app, the Starbucks stores in Barcelona post two bundles of food for sale, combining a savoury item with two sweet products. Users can then purchase these bundles half price through the app, picking them up instore at closing time.

Speaking about the partnerships, Álvaro Salafranca, director general of Starbucks Spain and Portugal, said: “Our store teams are passionate about helping those in need in their local community so we are delighted to have found charity support partners in these two cities that are able to facilitate us offering our unsold food to those who will benefit most.”

Reinforces commitment to advancing Starbucks sustainability commitments in the Netherlands and driving industry-wide awareness and participation of cup recycling

Amsterdam, 03&nbsp;May 2018 – Starbucks now offers paper cup recycling in 11 of its company-operated stores in Amsterdam, Utrecht and The Hague.

Following a similar cup collection and recycling process proving successful in UK Starbucks stores, customers in the Netherlands can now return any used paper cup to 11 stores in the Netherlands. Cups will be sorted and collected by the store teams for onward recycling, in collaboration with local providers SUEZ and Essity. Waste management company SUEZ will collect and break down the material, and Essity will recycle them into new paper products.

“Reducing waste is part of Starbucks global environmental goals and this new cup recycling initiative in the Netherlands underlines our commitment.” says Susanne Folkerts, supply chain project manager, Starbucks EMEA. “By taking the lead in trialing cup collection and recycling, we’re optimistic about influencing partner (employee) and customer behaviours and hopefully inspire others in the industry to participate.” she adds.

This announcement underlines Starbucks commitment to reducing its impact on the environment, by providing opportunities to help recycle more paper cups. This is in addition to offering a longstanding discount of 30 cents for customers bringing their own tumblers, providing the option of using reusable cups that are sold in stores from €2, and always offering customers ceramic mugs if they choose to drink in store.

“We know our customers and store teams want to reduce paper cup waste and so we’re delighted that we now have a system to recycle paper cups from our stores. We are confident that we can make a difference, on top of our reusable cup discount and increased ceramic mug use.” says Babette van den Berge, District Manager, Starbucks Netherlands.

The cup recycling will first trial in 11 company-operated Starbucks stores in the Netherlands, with plans to expand to more Starbucks stores across the country, operated by licensed business partners.

Na een succesvol vergelijkbaar verzamelproces voor recycling in deelnemende Britse winkels, kunnen klanten in Nederland nu elke gebruikte papieren beker bij elf Nederlandse locaties inleveren. Deze bekers worden door het personeel verzameld en in samenwerking met lokale leveranciers Essity en SUEZ gesorteerd voor verdere recycling. Afvalbeheerbedrijf SUEZ verzamelt het materiaal en breekt het af, wat Essity vervolgens recycled tot nieuwe papierproducten.

"Het terugdringen van afval is onderdeel van de wereldwijde milieudoelstellingen van Starbucks en dit nieuwe bekerrecycling-initiatief in Nederland benadrukt onze toewijding", zegt Susanne Folkerts, supply chain projectmanager, Starbucks EMEA. Dit is in aanvulling op de korting van dertig cent die Starbucks al een langere tijd biedt aan klanten die een herbruikbare beker meenemen, het aanbieden van de herbruikbare bekers die voor €2 in de winkels worden verkocht, en het aanbieden van keramische mokken voor klanten die ervoor kiezen om de bestelling in de Nederlandse winkels te nuttigen.
