Starbucks UK is a retail business for the trade of gourmet coffee, tea and related products in the UK. The business remains heavily dependent on volume sales and footfall. During the period, it has continued to shift its offering from high street to Drive Thru and delivery formats, to meet the demands of the evolving consumer, while navigating the challenges of COVID-19.

Reported revenues decreased by 33% during the period, to £243.3m (2019: £361.7m), where the impact of Covid-19 was recognised primarily in the second half of the year. The decline was primarily down to COVID-19-related store closures and restrictions for the retail industry, after the eased reopening for UK businesses during 2020.

Gross profit for the period decreased by 54% to £32.3m (2019: £69.9m), because of labour costs staying broadly neutral at £77m, as the Company did not make any redundancies during the period and continued to pay employees in full during store closures. Other key cost drivers include £1.8m of charges, related to the early termination of three leases on stores that were closed permanently; flexible financial and development terms offered to licensees for COVID-19-related store closures, including the waiving royalty payments and; a further £10.4m of impairment charges against 35 underperforming stores.

Starbucks UK reported a loss before tax in the period, of £40.9m (2019: loss before tax of £6.6m). The Company reported a negative UK corporation tax charge of £4.4m (2019 loss: £1.9m), recognising an increase in the deferred tax asset, relating directly to the loss in the period.

During the period, Starbucks UK accelerated its efforts to adapt its business model such that its offering meets the needs of the post-COVID consumer. The business has invested heavily to support the delivery platforms such as Uber Eats, Just Eat and on-the-go formats. At the end of the financial year 2020, 231 stores were a part of the Starbucks® Delivers initiative and active on the Uber Eats platform across various cities in the UK. The mobile order and pay (MOP) model has also been beneficial since the easing of lockdown, to support takeaway offerings, accounting for 6% of total sales during the period. Drive-Thru stores have been introduced across the country, with 200 stores trading at the end of FY20 (of which 87% were licenced).

Starbucks UK also continued to evolve its store portfolio and review its locations and rental agreements, accelerated by COVID-19. The Company has been in discussions with its landlords following the pandemic to seek rent concessions where trade has been impacted and to regear leases where property values have fallen. While no concessions have been reflected during this period, negotiations are expected in FY21 to utilise break clauses in its lease agreements where leases are no longer competitive.

Starbucks EMEA Companies are headquartered in London, consisting of six companies that service the franchise in the EMEA region: Starbucks EMEA Limited, Starbucks EMEA Holdings Ltd, Starbucks EMEA Investment Limited, Starbucks International Holdings Limited, Holding Company International and Starbucks Card Europe Limited. These businesses are collectively known as "Starbucks EMEA."

The aggregated companies reported lower aggregated revenues, down by 32% to $168m (FY19: $245m), driven almost entirely by store closures as a result of COVID. Starbucks EMEA waived royalties due from licensees between 1 April and 30 June 2020 when stores were closed, directly reducing revenue by 25% compared with FY19.

The EMEA companies reported a lower profit on ordinary activities of $104m (FY19: $171m), the decrease due to aggregated operating losses of $77m (FY19: $4.7m). The operating losses were partly offset by lower costs from COVID-19-related closures. There was continued support for Starbucks Italy of $23.3m and ongoing payroll costs of $50m.

The corporate tax expense for the EMEA companies was $3.1m for the period (FY19: $11.5m).

Despite the challenges of COVID-19, Starbucks EMEA has seen continued licensee store growth in the Middle East and Turkey, including the opening of 167 new stores (net of closures). The rapid roll-out of Drive-Thru boosted sales by 24% in the Middle East versus FY19. This performance however was offset by poorer performance in Europe, supressing revenues by 71%.

Post year-end and COVID-19 recovery update

At the date of filing, Starbucks is continuing to assess and respond to government mandated rules on social distancing and operational practicing, navigating local and national lockdown rules in the UK and EMEA. The region continues to be supported by Starbucks Corporation, given the strategic importance of the UK market to trial new initiatives in coffee, food service and point of sale. The business expects a continued shift of consumer behaviour which will drive further evolution of its stores, locations and offerings in the future.

The growth and expansion of the Circular Cup is testament to Cornwall’s thriving circular economy and a result of high-skilled manufacturing jobs created in the community. This will be celebrated at the G7 Summit hosted at Carbis Bay, in Cornwall, from 11-13 June, with the Circular Cup featuring as part of the world-leading conference.

Today, Starbucks announced that it will introduce a unique reusable Cup-Share program in all of its 3,840 stores in Europe, Middle East, and Africa by 2025 as it looks to reduce the amount of its single use waste. An initial trial will begin over the coming months in the U.K., France and Germany expanding shortly thereafter based on local operations, regulations, and customer feedback.

Introducing and scaling a reusable Cup-Share initiative in EMEA is a key part of Starbucks global <a href="https://stories.starbucks.com/stories/2020/starbucks-solidifies-pathway-to-a-planet-positive-future/">commitment</a> to reduce single use cup waste and goal to reduce waste by 50% by 2030. The program is designed to overcome barriers currently limiting reusable cup usage. This work also expands on the company’s comprehensive strategy to designing out waste which includes in-store recycling and ceramic availability, reusable discounts, as well as paper cup surcharges and developing a circular economy through merchandise like the Starbucks Circular Cup.

Duncan Moir, president Starbucks EMEA said:

“We have set an ambitious goal to be a resource positive company and I believe we have a responsibility to give our customers new and unique options to integrate reusables in their day to day lives. While we have made great strides in reducing the number of single use paper cups that leave our stores there is more to be done and we must make reusability the only option, long term”.

In the pilot projects, Starbucks will trial a Cup-Share program that allows customers to pay a small deposit for a reusable cup for hot and cold beverages. Tested to last up to 30 times and available in three sizes, each cup uses an identifying number associated with the Starbucks reusable cup to the deposit paid. The customer will then be able to use their reusable and return it to Starbucks via a kiosk or at the point of sale. Upon return, Starbucks will give the deposit back to the customer in the form of tender

As part of the Cup-Share program, Starbucks will be introducing a new reusable cup that uses patented foaming technology that results in a rigid and durable wall structure with up to 70% less plastic than current reusable cups. In addition, this unique wall structure provides insulation for both hot and cold liquids, so that it can be used for both hot and cold beverages without the need for any sleeve, helping to further reduce our resource footprint.

This initiative will be in addition to providing a 25-30 pence/cent discount for any customer bringing in their own reusable cup across the region. The company is also re-introducing its 5 pence/cent paper cup surcharge in the U.K. and Germany to encourage reusable usage with funds being directed to environmental charities addressing global waste issues. This re-introduction is compounded by Starbucks stores in Switzerland and Czech Republic also introducing a paper cup charge over the coming weeks.

Today, Starbucks announced that it is giving away free Tall filter coffees to thank transport workers and NHS staff for their work across the country throughout this difficult year, as the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s #RoyalTrainTour travels on its final day.

Available all day on Monday 14th December, all transport workers carrying a Rail Staff Travel Card, as well as NHS staff, first responders and care workers can order a free Tall filter coffee from any Starbucks store in Britain (England, Scotland and Wales) when they show their work identity card.

The free Tall filter coffee for NHS and transport workers announcement follows the launch of Starbucks NHS Charities Together (NHSCT) <a href="https://www.nhscharitiestogether.co.uk/christmas/">Christmas fundraising campaign</a> starting today.

Part of an ongoing partnership between Starbucks and NHSCT, which will soon see Starbucks stores across the UK paired with a local NHSCT charity, all the money raised from NHSCT’s Christmas campaign will provide additional support to NHS workers, volunteers and patients that goes above and beyond the health service. This includes mental health support, hot meals, a place to rest for staff during long shifts, as well as funding vital hospice and social care services.

Earlier this week, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were named joint patrons of NHS Charities Together - the couple's first joint patronage beyond their own Royal Foundation.

As the originators of the holiday coffee cup, the arrival of Starbucks festive cup design is emblematic of the start of the holiday season.

And this year, as part of ongoing sustainability efforts, Starbucks has launched a reusable version of the iconic holiday cups.

Featuring the same siren logo, plus clever patented technology, the heat sensitive cup will change from holly green to warm red when a hot drink is poured into it, adding an extra bit of magic to your Starbucks Experience this year.

Each colour-change will last as long as your drink does, meaning you can keep track of how much you have left easily without opening the lid. Once your drink is finished, or turns cold, the cup will revert back to Starbucks classic green, ready to be used again.

This October, during Black History Month, Starbucks is proud to celebrate the unique stories of our partners and what this month means to them.

Q. Tell us a bit about yourself, your career, role in the business and how long you have been a partner?

A. I am Basil, I live in London, married for 33-years, and have three grown-up children.

I have been proud to be a partner for other 12-years and currently work in Finance as Credit Controller. I am also a Coffee Master, a Mental Health First Aider, and the Chair of the Starbucks EMEA Black Partner Network. Outside of work, I am also a trustee for the Hogarth Charitable Trust, a children’s charity based in Chiswick.

Q. Basil, as the chair of the Black Partner Network, please can you tell us a little more about it.

A. The EMEA Black Partner Network was established in July, it follows to some extent the best practice and legacy of our Black Partner Network in the US which was established way back in 2007.&nbsp;

The Black Partner Network aims are to encourage diversity, promote inclusion, and contribute to the success of our partners and our business. Giving partners the opportunity to act with courage, no longer be bystanders, and challenge the status quo to influence our culture through the lens of humanity.

The Black Partner Network is led by partners, for partners, and is open and available to all EMEA Support Centre Partners to join to share, learn, listen, contribute, and grow.

Q. What does Black History Month mean to you, and why is it important to celebrate the landmark?

A. Black History is a time when the African diaspora can take time out to appreciate, by celebrating the people who came before them, and what they had fought for, and the present pioneers.

It’s to recognise their contribution to humankind, that was hidden from the rest of the world by design and bring awareness to the those whom choses to be enlighten by these facts, that the enslaved was an interruption to African history.

And that this diaspora refers to the many communities of people of African descent dispersed throughout the world because of historic involuntary movements, this being the result of the Arab and Atlantic slave trade.

From a personal impact perspective, and from my own family history, it’s an opportunity for me to reflect on my Great, Great, Great-Uncle’s contribution, who died on in battlefield defending the British empire – mother country as it as was known then – 1914-1918.

A. My name is Michelle Lisette Wilson, I am mixed race, my mother is from Belize, Central America and my father is Scottish, born in Dunfermline. I have been a Store Manager in Dunfermline Kingsgate Centre for just over two-years now. I began my Starbucks career as a supervisor in 2015 and it is the best decision I have ever made. Having worked in retail from the age of 16 I have had the pleasure of working in many different workplace environments and I can safely say none have been as welcoming, enjoyable and as motivating as working for Starbucks. The team I joined, and currently work with are my second little family, who I value massively. &nbsp;Past and present partners still socialise together and when old partners pass through from time to time it is like they have never been away. So far, I have had an amazing career and I cannot wait to see what the future holds.

A. Black History Month means so much as it's an opportunity for people of colour to celebrate their culture and the accomplishments of Black people through the ages. During Black History Month articles and stories are shared through social media and on the news. Museums and Art Galleries use this month to celebrate and try to educate. The more we discuss these things the more we can affect change. My hope is that more people will begin to know how oppressed Black people were and know more about their history. That they will begin to understand what Black people have been through and continue to go through. NOW is the time for change.

Never have we had a generation where so much is accepted and normalised, publicised or advertised. People can literally do or be whatever they want, the choices and opportunities are endless. So why is it we still find ourselves fighting for basic human rights for certain cultural groups? It makes no sense to me!

As the great Anti-Racism Educator Dr Jane Elliot once said, “There's only one race, the Human Race.”

A. My name is Rebecca Sotomi, manager of the Drive Thru store in Belvedere, Kent. I started at Starbucks 10 years ago as a barista and have risen through the ranks to where I am today. My journey with Starbucks has been an incredible and enjoyable one. I have had the opportunity to make friends and meet people both customers and partners. I have really grown from a shy and unsure 20-something to the confident self-assured woman I am today. I owe that to Starbucks.

Being African-Nigerian growing up, I felt uncertain of my place in the world and was unsure of how I would be received. This made me quiet and observant being slow to think about what my responses should be. I did not enjoy the benefit of being able to discover myself out loud. I've been blessed to not have had to deal with any overtly discriminatory behavior, but I have been cautious in certain places where I find myself.&nbsp;

A. Black history month is so important because it highlights the plight of a race of people who were for centuries repressed and oppressed. It also highlights the strengths and capabilities of the amazing men and women who broke free from their oppression and achieved incredible feats. Lastly, Black history month is important because it is vital that we don't forget.

As George Santayana so eloquently said, “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it”.

A. My name is Longji Longhor, I am a two-and-a-half-year partner and currently work within the Accounts Payable Department. The heartbeat of the company being responsible for all outgoing payments to our suppliers.

Q. Longji, as the co-chair of the Black Partner Network, please can you tell us a little more about it.

A. I am one of two co-chairs of the Black Partner Network, created following the death of George Floyd.

Whilst the Black Partner Network was born out of an unwarted situation, I am very proud to say that we have made huge strides in a short space of time, showing we really can make the best of a bad situation.&nbsp;

A. Black History is so important for me as it is a time for us to reflect on the rich history and heritage we have.&nbsp; A lot of our history was lost during the burning of the Library of Alexandria, pillaging of the Library of Timbuktu, and with the 400 years of slavery.

However, when I think of black history and people that has really helped shape our history, I think of people such as: Mohammed Ali, Rosa Parks, Kofi Annan, Oprah Winfrey, Frederick Douglass, Lewis Hamilton, Maya Angelou, Nelson Mandela, Bob Marley, Harriet Tubman, Martin Luther King, Jr, Wole Soyinka &amp; Barack Obama to list a few.

When I think of black history, I think of the great achievements black people have done to contribute to the world we live in of recent years. I think of Barack Obama becoming the first Black president in the United States, I think of Lewis Hamilton equalling Michael Schumacher race wins and on course to becoming the most successful F1 driver in F1 history and a plethora of other achievements Black people have accomplished.

This is why Black History Month is important to me. I believe in due course the world will become a better place.

Starbucks honours Black History Month

Starbucks reached the milestone with the opening of the Narmanli Han

18 years after first arriving in Istanbul, Starbucks has reached a historic new milestone, having just opened Turkey’s 500th store, the Narmanli Han. Epitomising Starbucks continued growth in the region, the unique store design combines historic architecture with the familiarity and sense of community the Starbucks Experience is known for.

Situated on the famous Istiklal Avenue, the store is based in the heart of Istanbul, an area popular with tourists and affectionately referred to as Istanbul’s “Champs-Élysées”. The location is of special significance for Starbucks as its 200th store in Turkey is also located on the same street, in Taksim Square.

Built in 1831, the store’s unique design – created by Swiss-Italian architects, Gaspare and Giuseppe Fossati – takes inspiration from Istanbul’s renowned architecture. The historic building has undergone significant renovation projects over recent years, maintaining elements of local heritage, while embracing the latest in Starbuck innovation. Set over two floors, the Narmanli Han is equipped with digital menu boards and the latest Mastrena espresso machines, complimenting the store’s modern furnishings. On the second-floor, guests can enjoy the view of the surrounding areawhile experiencing the local atmosphere from the balcony. While outside, customers can relax in a large courtyard, complete with a distinctive water feature to soothe the senses.

To complete the bespoke Starbucks Experience, the store serves a range of traditional Turkish coffee. &nbsp;Steeped in heritage and treasured by locals, Turkish coffee plays an important role in social gatherings and is an integral part of the local culture. Despite the name, ‘Turkish Coffee’ actually refers to the preparation process, rather than the coffee itself, which in fact coming from Central and South America. These coffee beans are roasted, then ground into a fine powder, before being combined with water and sugar. The coffee is made in a "cezve", or Turkish coffee pot, and served in small cups where the grounds are allowed to settle, before being enjoyed.

However you have your coffee at the Narmanli Han, it will be expertly and passionately handcrafted and made with the world’s highest quality Arabica coffee, all of which is verified as 99 percent ethically sourced through its Coffee and Farmer Equity (C.A.F.E.) Practices programme, developed in partnership with Conservation International.
