In response to Typhoon Yagi, a devastating storm that struck southern China and Southeast Asia, and its aftermath, The Starbucks Foundation has partnered with <a href="https://planet-water.org/starbucks/">Planet Water Foundation</a>, a non-profit organization, to provide clean water access to impacted communities. Through this support, Planet Water Foundation deployed AquaTower water filtration systems to provide clean, safe drinking water access in Yen Bai province in Vietnam, and Chiang Rai province in Thailand. These systems produce 1,000 liters of safe drinking water per hour, providing impacted community members with safe water for drinking, cooking, and other essential uses.

On November 7, Starbucks Vietnam marked a significant milestone in its 10-year journey in the market with the inauguration of its first Community Store. The Nguyen Huu Huan store not only celebrates the company's decade-long presence but also a continued commitment to social impact.

The Community Store is dedicated to supporting youth vocational education in Vietnam, with 3,000 VND (approximately $0.12 USD) per beverage sold at the store contributing to training programs with nonprofit partner REACH over the next three years. This store is part of a global initiative to strengthen communities, support economic opportunities, and create impact through partnerships with local nonprofit organizations.

“Over the past 10 years, Starbucks Vietnam has sought to fulfill our brand promise to uplift the everyday for customers, while contributing positively to our communities," said Ho Mai Ho, general manager of Starbucks Vietnam. "This Community Store is an extension of this promise, and we look forward to supporting the youth of Vietnam through this store," he added. 

The Starbucks Nguyen Huu Huan Community Store will support REACH, which provides the most vulnerable youth with vocational training, skills, and employment opportunities to build a better future for themselves and their families. With grant funding from The Starbucks Foundation, Starbucks Vietnam first partnered with REACH, in collaboration with The Asia Foundation, in 2016 to provide vocational training, career advice, and job placement services in the food and beverage industry (F&amp;B) for young people in Vietnam. Starbucks Vietnam partners (employees) volunteered to help mentor youth, and plan to continue volunteering with REACH's future cohorts.

“REACH is sincerely grateful for the opportunity to collaborate with Starbucks on its inaugural community store in Vietnam. With a rich history spanning 15 years, REACH has been a catalyst for positive change, empowering countless disadvantaged young individuals to reshape their futures through high-quality vocational training programs, successful job placements, and sustained support post-graduation,” said Pham Thi Thanh Tam, Founder and Executive Chief of REACH. “We hope that with the support from this Community Store, we will be able to extend educational and employment opportunities to even more marginalized youth, and contribute to the sustainable socio-economic development of Vietnam,” she added.

The store draws inspiration from our iconic Pike Place Market store in Seattle, honoring our heritage as it finds its home in Hanoi's vibrant Old Quarter. With an emphasis on our partnership with REACH, a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering disadvantaged youth through vocational training, the store proudly showcases a mural and artwork by local artists Nguyễn Tấn Lực and Trang Nhơn Khoah that convey the message of coffee, connection, and community.

The store offers a warm and inviting ambiance, thoughtfully designed to accommodate youth programs and workshops. Starbucks Vietnam celebrated 10 years of sustainable growth, and opened their 100th Starbucks® store on September 16th. As a special tribute to this milestone, and to honor Vietnam's rich coffee heritage, Starbucks proudly returns locally-sourced coffee Starbucks Reserve™ Vietnam Đưng K'Nớ. 

"This achievement fills us with so much joy, as we remain committed to delight our customers with the Starbucks Experience, and to build meaningful connections," said Patricia Marques, general manager of Starbucks Vietnam. The 100th Starbucks store in Vietnam is located in Lotte Mall West Lake, a new entertainment and shopping complex in Hanoi. The store was designed to pay homage to the beautiful natural environment that nurtures coffee beans. Through a carefully selected blue accent color and a warm material palette, the design seeks to capture the essence of the intertwined connection in nature, creating a distinctive space for customers to relax and enjoy connecting over a cup of coffee. 

Spotlighting the exquisite flavors of Vietnamese coffee from the Central Highlands of Vietnam

The new Starbucks Reserve™ Vietnam Đưng K'Nớ highlights smallholder farmers and the local coffee culture, and their significance throughout Starbucks journey in Vietnam. This blend is sourced from the Central Highlands of Vietnam and remote town of Đưng K'Nớ, home to the K’Ho people - a matriarchal indigenous community where 82 smallholder farmers work diligently to preserve the cultural traditions while embracing responsible farming practices.

Starbucks Reserve™ Vietnam Đưng K'Nớ is a delicious, smooth coffee featuring a light roast that brings out balanced notes of fresh lemongrass and sweet apricot. Starbucks opens 100th store in Vietnam

Starbucks Vietnam and Food Bank Vietnam joined together in partnership to combat hunger by signing a strategic cooperation agreement on August 22, 2023. Through the agreement, the two parties announced their plans to conduct a pilot program that aims to enhance awareness about food waste reduction and provide quality food supplies to communities in need.

Partnership in reducing food waste and combating hunger

Starbucks Vietnam and Food Bank Vietnam are constructing a pilot program focused on reducing food waste in select stores in Ho Chi Minh City. This initiative sets the premise for programs to minimize food waste in the community as well as provide food to communities in need.

Through this partnership, the two parties are jointly committed to creating a positive impact on the communities in need in Vietnam.

"We are really happy to kick off this project with Food Bank Vietnam. Starbucks truly appreciates what the community gives us, and our mission is to give back as much as possible to create a better and more sustainable life," said Ms. Patricia Marques, General Manager of Starbucks Vietnam. "After a decade in the Vietnamese market, we continue to commit to sustainable business practices, reducing environmental impacts, and working towards a modern sustainable community. This agreement is the first stage of our commitment to hunger relief, and we look forward to expanding this meaningful initiative in the future."

The partnership between Food Bank Vietnam and Starbucks Vietnam marks a significant step towards food waste reduction and environmental protection. Both organizations will make efforts to continuously cooperate and present new initiatives in order to enhance the environment and provide hunger relief in Vietnam.

"The agreement solidifies both enterprises as significant partners to co-create and develop new societal values in the future” said Ms. Nguyen Hoang Truc Linh, CEO of Food Bank Vietnam. "Food Bank Vietnam takes on the role of raising awareness and combating food waste through green activities, including distributing and sharing Starbucks products with various entities, including organizations, shelters, open homes, and individuals in need."

In addition to the partnership with Food Bank Vietnam, Starbucks Vietnam, together with its nonprofit partners, has also created positive impact on the local communities it serves. Starbucks partners (employees) have assisted in the building of nine Aqua Towers with Planet Water Foundation, providing access to clean, safe drinking water, handwashing and sanitation infrastructure across rural Vietnam. A "Reusable Campaign” at stores also encourages customers to shift from single-use plastics to reusables, including reusable cup through a "Personal Cup" campaign encouraging customers to enjoy their favorite drinks with their own serve ware.

This year, Starbucks Vietnam celebrates its 10-year anniversary with the unveiling of the newly renovated New World store, the first store opened in the market, and nationwide anniversary promotions from January to May. In the decade since the brand entered the market, Starbucks Vietnam is currently in 8 Vietnamese cities/provinces and has over 1,200 partners (employees) in 92 stores delivering the Starbucks Experience every day.

Paying tribute to Vietnam’s heritage and culture, many Starbucks® stores in Vietnam feature unique architectural styles and traditional elements, such as the Starbucks® Tran Hung Dao store in Hoi An.

The 10th anniversary celebration of Starbucks Vietnam kicked off in January. First-phase promotions included a range of limited-edition merchandise, customers programs and giveaway activities. The second-phase started in May, featuring the unveiling of the newly renovated Starbucks® New World, the first Starbucks® store in Vietnam. 

The special space has been transformed into a brand new, cozy and beautifully-designed coffee house. Customers will have access to a wide range of merchandise items, all while enjoying their favorite Starbucks beverages on this unique commemoration.

Starbucks Vietnam’s Commitment to Communities and Sustainability

Besides a decade of coffee inspiration for customers, Starbucks Vietnam, together with its partners, has also created more positive impact to the local communities it serves.

From April 28th, coffee lovers can now enjoy their favorite beverages on the beautiful white-sand beach at the Starbucks Beach House Sun Primavera in Phu Quoc, the first Starbucks store on the island.

Known for its enticing white-sand beaches, Phu Quoc is the peaceful oasis to escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. Located right at the seashore, the Beach House Sun Primavera store offers more than 140 seats inside and at the spacious outdoor patio where customers are treated to the stunning panoramic view of the infinite ocean which intersects with the horizon, evoking a sense of calm and tranquility.

To ensure customers enjoy deliver the signature Starbucks Experience surrounded by the vibrant nature of Phu Quoc, the Beach House Sun Primavera store features a design theme that delivers a joyful and inviting beach vibe. With shades of blue accent colors and a selected earthy palette, the store is a celebration of the beauty of the sky and the sea just outside the store.

Starbucks today announced its first Greener Stores in the Asia Pacific region, as part of the <a href="https://stories.starbucks.com/press/2023/starbucks-verifies-3500-greener-stores-globally/">company’s global expansion of its Greener Store Framework to over 3,500 stores in 20 markets</a>. Located in Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam, the five stores are amongst the first of their kind in the company’s Asia Pacific region, with over 20 more expected to be certified this year. This latest round of certifications sets the company well on its way to achieving its goal of 10,000 Greener Stores globally by 2025.

In support of Starbucks 2030 goals of reducing carbon, water, and waste footprints by 50%, the open-source Greener Stores Framework was co-developed with the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). The framework includes a set of 25 performance-based standards across environmental impact areas such as energy efficiency, water stewardship, and waste diversion, designed to accelerate the transformation of retail towards lower-impact stores.

“We're excited to continue expanding our Greener Store portfolio worldwide, a key step towards reaching our ambitious resource positive goals. Having been on a sustainability journey for many years now, we’ve already seen results of our Greener Stores in the United States where they first piloted. In fact, when compared to historic store practices, these Greener Stores have shown to deliver 30% water savings and 30% energy reduction,” said Michael Kobori, Starbucks chief sustainability officer. “With a company of Starbucks scale – any one action, no matter how small, has the potential for massive impact. We are heartened by our partners around the world who are stepping up to adopt our Greener Store standards. This is testament of their energy and passion for sustainability that continues to drive our innovation.”

Greener Stores: paving the way towards a more sustainable future

The new Greener Stores in the Asia Pacific region help reduce Starbucks environmental impact through performance-based standards that incorporate design and extend throughout the life of a store. Each Greener Store has a unique combination of sustainable features that qualify for third-party verification on a quarterly basis. This ranges from features like energy and water efficient equipment and appliances, low-emitting paints and sealants, Grounds for Your Garden program, as well as energy efficient HVAC temperature systems and more. Additionally, the new Greener Stores in Asia include elements that go beyond the standard to deliver more robust energy, carbon, water, and waste reductions.

Singapore’s first Greener Store is strategically located at Jurong Lake Gardens, a showcase for sustainable design and operations, set amidst lush greenery, restored wetlands and habitats for biodiversity. The Greener store itself is similarly designed with long-term, eco-conscious operations in mind, with responsible design, construction and operation, including energy and water efficiency.

Thailand has certified three Greener Stores that operate entirely on electricity, and feature precise energy monitoring capabilities using a detailed energy management system (EMS) that captures energy use data in real-time to maintain high performance and efficiency. The system will enable the stores to identify inefficiencies and help control and conserve energy in the future.

In Vietnam, the Greener Store is equipped with 100% LED lighting and sun shading features that reduce heat gain and energy consumption within the store. The store operates entirely on electricity and has a long-term contract to buy Renewable Energy Certificates to offset the energy used in stores.

“The new Greener Stores in the Asia Pacific region are poised to set a new standard in sustainable retail which we hope will accelerate our movement towards Starbucks resource positive goals,” said Scott Keller, senior vice president, Store Development &amp; Design. “As one of our fastest growing regions, we want to ensure that we are driving growth with a sustainable future in mind for our communities and planet – and Greener Stores are one of the ways that will help us achieve that vision.”

Starbucks also today announced its first in-region Greener Stores in Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA), as the company continues its global expansion of the Greener Store Framework to leverage its scale for good to accelerate the global movement towards a more sustainable future. The company is also expanding in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) by building all new stores in the region under the Greener Stores framework by the end of 2023 and going forward. In China and Japan, Starbucks plans to update its existing store portfolios by applying Greener Store standards. The aim for Starbucks China is to operate 2,500 Greener Stores in the market by 2025.

Starbucks has set bold global aspirations towards a resource-positive future and can only achieve its goals with the help of partners, customers, industry experts and advocates.
