How do you create inventive, beautiful and delicious beverages for people who love the new yet treasure the cultural culinary traditions of old?

It’s a question that Vanessa Chan, Ellis Ng and their teams consider every day as they brainstorm, test and perfect new beverage recipes designed especially for Starbucks discerning customers across Asia Pacific.

They’re constantly creating, always in pursuit of the next must-have beverage… created and served as only Starbucks can.

Today, they’ve agreed to sneak us an inside look at how their respective teams develop innovative beverages that are uniquely Starbucks across 14 diverse markets in the Asia Pacific* region.

Exploring new ways for customers to experience local flavors and traditions

Home to some of the world’s most diverse coffee and tea drinking cultures, Asia serves as a constant source of inspiration for Starbucks. This week it launched the <a href="https://stories.starbucks.com/asia/stories/2021/explore-japan-with-47-local-beverages/">47 Jimoto Frappuccino® blended beverage series</a> to mark Starbucks 25th anniversary in Japan. Thoughtfully created by local partners, each of the 47 beverages celebrate the communities across Japan’s 47 different prefectures, paying tribute to their unique cultures and tastes. For the Asia Pacific development teams, locally-relevant inspiration is just as important.

“Our creative process for creating seasonal beverages starts with the customer in mind. We create innovative experiences that excite our customers, providing a variety of choices so they can find the beverage that is right for them,” says Ellis, who leads product R&amp;D for Starbucks Asia Pacific. 

“Based on the unique Starbucks Experience we want to provide our customers, we work with our insights team and suppliers to identify unique ingredients from across the region that complement the flavor profiles of our coffees and teas.”

The team then takes a selection of beverage ideas to partners across Starbucks 14 markets in Asia Pacific to ensure they align with local nuances and customer preferences. Once a shortlist is narrowed down, it’s time to get creative: “By focusing on the latest trends, combined with high quality ingredients and a passion for craft, we’re able to develop beverages that delight our customers’ thirst for innovation,” says Vanessa.

Innovating the tea experience to suit evolving lifestyles

As you’d expect in a region with a deep appreciation for tea, creating innovative tea experiences that fit customers’ evolving lifestyles is an important focus for Starbucks in Asia.

“During the past 18 months our lifestyles have changed. Customers are increasingly exploring plant-based foods, and looking for the occasional light indulgence that makes their day as they navigate this new normal,” says Vanessa. “Expanding our tea platform to cater to a variety of routines is another way for us to surprise and delight our customers.”

From the soft mouthfeel of Azuki beans to the chewiness of jelly chunks, Asian beverages are defined as much by texture as they are by taste. Starbucks <a href="https://stories.starbucks.com/asia/stories/2020/refreshing-new-tea-ology-drinks-in-asia-this-summer/">limited-time Tea-logy range</a> and this summer’s <a href="https://stories.starbucks.com/asia/stories/2021/enjoy-tea-lightful-summer-drinks-at-starbucks-in-asia/">Zen Cloud Oolong Tea beverages</a> mix seasonal fruits with Teavana™ tea bases, using a variety of foam flavors and fruit jellies to create an interesting mouthfeel, making for the perfect seasonal refreshment.

“We continue to experiment with texture, having recently created an aromatic tea foam which is thicker than our cold brew foams. It’s the perfect light indulgence that elevates the tea experience,” shares Ellis.

Customers across Asia can enjoy its silky texture in beverages including <a href="https://stories.starbucks.com/asia/stories/2021/enjoy-tea-lightful-summer-drinks-at-starbucks-in-asia/">Starbucks® Cocoa Golden Monkey and Starbucks® Triple Golden Monkey</a>, serving as the perfect complement to the bold and fragrant Asian flavors of the new Teavana™ Golden Monkey Black Tea.

Starbucks also continues to expand its use of plant-based ingredients across its tea range. By using plant-based milks such as oat milk to premium Teavana™ tea bases, the team has created a fresh take on Asia’s much-loved milk tea beverage, catered to customers’ lifestyle preferences.

Infusing beloved flavors with a fresh twist

In Asia, holiday celebrations are unique from one community to the next, presenting a creative challenge for the product team. “For our customers in Asia, sharing food with family is what makes festive celebrations so special,” says Ellis, as he talks about the creative process behind Starbucks much-loved Holiday beverages.

“The idea of sharing a warm apple pie with our loved ones inspired us to create our <a href="https://stories.starbucks.com/asia/stories/2020/starbucks-brings-back-the-holidays-in-asia/">Jolly Baked Apple series</a>. Pairing fruit with coffee sounds like an unexpected combination, but we created a caramel-like baked apple flavor that complements coffee, while evoking that feeling of sharing your favourite holiday pie with friends and family.”

From festive traditions to the art of tea, Asia Pacific was also one of Starbucks first regions to launch Starbucks Pure Matcha globally. Using high-quality pure Japanese matcha tea powder gives the team flexibility to adjust the flavor, sweetness and intensity of its seasonal matcha beverages. <a href="https://stories.starbucks.com/asia/stories/2021/cozy-winter-beverages-arrive-at-starbucks/">This year, the result was the Pistachio Pure Matcha Latte</a>, an earthy twist on customers’ favorite Matcha Green Tea Latte.

The team frequently looks to local innovation across the wider region for examples of how Starbucks is creating new beverage experiences, and customers are increasingly seeking out local ingredients and flavors. Baristas in Ibaraki, Japan, created the IBARAKI Melon Igappe Creamy Frappuccino® Blended Cream to celebrate the area’s most popular fruit. Elsewhere in Asia, Starbucks Coffee Korea invited customers to celebrate strawberry season with limited-time beverages featuring premium <a href="https://stories.starbucks.com/asia/stories/2020/starbucks-koreas-new-menu-enchants-strawberry-lovers/">local Seolhyang strawberries</a>.

“Our farmers and suppliers are a constant source of inspiration, as they have their fingers on the pulse of the specific ingredients and flavors that resonate with our local audiences,” Ellis shares.

Taking innovation to the next level

Asia Pacific continues to lead tea innovation for Starbucks globally, and the region continues to debut new flavors and iconic beverage collections, such as the <a href="https://stories.starbucks.com/asia/stories/2021/step-forward-into-spring-with-starbucks-japans-new-cherry-blossom-collection/">Cherry Blossom</a> series, which are born in Asia but go on to become loved by customers around the world.

Beyond its stores, Starbucks provides customers with locally-relevant ways to enjoy their favorite beverages in channels outside retail stores. Customers in Japan can brew their own hot and iced coffee at home using single-serve origami filters, developed first for the local market. And for those on the go, Starbucks also developed a series of seasonal Chilled Cup beverages, available across convenience stores in select markets across Asia.

Looking toward the future, Asia’s dynamic culture and rich traditions inspire Vanessa and Ellis to imagine new ways to perfect the Starbucks Experience for customers.

“For us, Asia is like the perfect mood board. It has rich coffee origins, a huge tea culture and diverse cuisines – all underpinned by a desire for the new. This helps us create breakthrough beverages that are unique to the region, delivered in a way only Starbucks can,” they add.

This month, Starbucks marks its 22nd year in South Korea with the opening of a new store in Seoul. The store offers an immersive Starbucks Experience for customers with seasonal and core beverages, Starbucks Reserve and Teavana beverages, as well as delicious food choices. Customers can also take their Starbucks Experience to-go with a convenient pick-up area for online orders near the entrance.

The interior of the store features a spacious coffee seminar area, a cozy fireplace, and a large digital art wall installation that visualizes Starbucks coffee stories. The first digital art wall series includes illustrated scenes from Starbucks coffee farm Hacienda Alsacia, Puerto Rico, by local artist Lee Kyu-tae.

To mark the opening of the new store, Starbucks Reserve stores across Korea will introduce 7 new seasonal beverages including the Shakerato Affogato, Powdered Soybean Black Milk Tea, Byulgung Omija Youthberry Tea and more.

Located in Bangkok, the Starbucks Reserve® Chao Phraya Riverfront marks Starbucks 417th store in Thailand, as the company continues to accelerate coffee innovation and growth across Asia Pacific

The store is home to Thailand’s first Teavana™ Bar and will be the first to serve the Muan Jai™ Blend, sourced in partnership with Northern Thai coffee farming communities

Today, Starbucks celebrates the opening of its largest store in Thailand with Starbucks Reserve® Chao Phraya Riverfront at ICONSIAM, Bangkok. It marks Starbucks 12th Reserve Bar and 417th store in Thailand, reaffirming the company’s commitment to accelerating growth across one of Southeast Asia’s most dynamic markets.

The store represents two firsts for Starbucks in Thailand. It is the first store to serve the Muan Jai™ Blend, a bold coffee from Northern Thailand, and also introduces the first Teavana™ Bar for customers seeking a reimagined tea experience.

Offering panoramic views over the iconic Chao Phraya river that flows through Bangkok’s vibrant urban center, the store was designed to create a welcoming Third Place where people can unwind and connect over signature, hand-crafted beverages.

“For 22 years, Starbucks has been elevating coffee craftsmanship and bringing unique experiences to our customers in Thailand. Today marks a significant milestone as we introduce an exciting new store that recognizes our coffee heritage while celebrating Thailand’s rich and diverse culture,” said Sara Trilling, president, Starbucks Asia Pacific.

Celebrating coffee craftsmanship and tea discovery

Customers can now experience the Muan Jai™ Blend with any Starbucks® handcrafted espresso beverages, as well as choose from a range of Starbucks® signature beverages and premium Starbucks Reserve® coffees that change throughout the year and can be enjoyed in a variety of brewing methods. The store also features extensive food menu, including artisanal pastries freshly baked in-store and Starbucks® signature desserts served with ice cream. 

At the Teavana™ Bar, customers can immerse themselves in a hands-on tea experience, exploring different flavors and high-quality tea varieties through beverages including the Lychee Earl Grey Tea and Peach Mojito.

Honoring Starbucks commitment to Thai coffee communities

Starbucks is dedicated to partnering with farmers across Asia Pacific to bring the region’s high-quality coffees to the world ethically and sustainably. Starbucks developed Muan&nbsp;Jai™ Blend, which means “wholehearted happiness”, in collaboration with farmers in Northern Thailand where it has been sourcing coffee in partnership with local farming communities since 2003.

Starbucks Reserve® Chao Phraya Riverfront will be the first store in Thailand to serve the distinctive blend, which was previously only available to customers as packaged whole bean coffee. In addition to giving a proportion of proceeds from Muan&nbsp;Jai™ Blend packaged coffee back to the community, for every cup of Muan Jai™ coffee served in-store, Starbucks will donate 10 baht to Northern Thai farming communities. 

“Thailand has a rich history of coffee production and we’re proud to have shared our passion for coffee with our customers, partners and communities since first opening our doors herein 1998,” said Nednapa Srisamai, managing director, Starbucks Coffee Thailand. “The store is a fantastic showcase of craftsmanship and underscores our commitment to nurturing moments of connection over a cup of coffee. We look forward to sharing the Starbucks Experience with our customers at this breathtaking new location.”

Bringing the coffee experience to life through local design

Inspired by its rich riverside setting and history, the store was designed to bring the coffee experience to life for customers while celebrating local Thai culture. Located atop of ICONSIAM one of Bangkok’s premier lifestyle destinations, the 1,260 square meter store features distinct artwork and design pieces created in partnership with local artisans.

As guests arrive, they are greeted by a colorful mural that depicts Thai coffee farming landscapes and Bangkok’s familiar landmarks. Taking design cues from the Chao Phraya river, flowing terrazzo flooring guides customers to a range of intimate coffee experiences.

As the centerpiece of the store, the Starbucks Reserve® bar features a wood-carved mural that pays homage to the traditional art of Thai wood carving, depicting rural scenes and coffee craftsmanship. Here customers can experience an expansive range of Starbucks Reserve® coffees, while appreciating artwork that celebrates local coffee-growing communities and their stories. At the main bar, customers can enjoy Starbucks® signature beverages, including the Muan Jai™ Blend, or choose from a selection of Teavana™ teas.

Customers are invited to ascend a feature staircase, inspired by the flavor wheel Starbucks uses to qualify its unique Starbucks Reserve® coffees, to explore the mezzanine floor above. The staircase features a coffee tree from Northern Thailand at the center and transforms into a compass, guiding customers on a bean-to-cup coffee journey that celebrates global coffee culture and Starbucks heritage. On the mezzanine floor, Starbucks Baristas guide customers through the different tastes and aromas of Starbucks Reserve®&nbsp;coffees, with a colorful artwork depicting the flavor wheel acting as a perfect backdrop.

The mezzanine ceiling features beautifully crafted lanterns in a nod to Bangkok’s Loy Krathong festival, while stadium seating mirrors the river’s contours, offering spectacular views over the city. Customers can also wind down on the outdoor terrace while enjoying panoramic views of the river.

On July 24, Starbucks celebrated its 21st anniversary in South Korea by opening the market’s largest Starbucks store in Yangpyeong, Gyeonggido near the scenic Namhan River. Spanning three stories and over 1,203 square meters (about 13,000 square feet), the new store is a reflection of Starbucks commitment to offering more ways for customers in Korea to enjoy the Starbucks Experience.

The Yangpyeong drive-thru store is the first Starbucks store in Korea to bring together a Reserve coffee bar, Teavana bar and drive-thru format. The result is a new experience for Korean customers that incorporates an interactive space with premium coffee and tea at the heart, featuring the ease and convenience of a Starbucks drive-thru.

Starbucks also shared plans to invite local talent to perform on the store’s rooftop, demonstrating Starbucks Korea’s ongoing efforts to create opportunities for young people in Korea.
