The Coffee Experience Center spans over 140 square meters (approx. 1,500 square feet) with designs inspired by rich copper tones and traditional Balinese Besek baskets, made with the same materials as the Starbucks Dewata Coffee Sanctuary including terracotta brickwork and terrazzo floors. Starbucks Coffee Japan will reduce its waste footprint through innovative re-use and recycling initiatives that positively impact its communities

Innovative coffee grounds recycle program will deliver new menu choices to consumers, while supporting local farmers

As part of Starbucks global commitment to reducing its waste footprint by 50% by 2030, Starbucks Coffee Japan today announced a series of re-usability and recycling initiatives to advance this goal. It will launch a new menu range featuring locally-sourced ingredients produced using recycled coffee grounds, as well as introduce tumbler recycling for customers and a cup share program.

Starbucks Coffee Japan will introduce three circularity strategies to reduce its waste footprint, while creating positive impact for local communities:

Producing new menu items through its Coffee Grounds Recycling Loop program

Customers can choose from three new food items that feature locally-sourced carrots and matcha green tea powder produced by its Coffee Grounds Recycling Loop program.

Through the program, Starbucks has partnered with farmers across Japan since 2014 to recycle used coffee grounds from its stores in Kanto and Kansai for agricultural compost and animal feed used to produce vegetables, green tea, and milk, which is incorporated into signature beverages, such as lattes.

Starbucks is now working with farmers to bring these ingredients back into its stores for customers to enjoy. Available nationwide, new menu items include:

Evolving the program is part of Starbucks ongoing approach to engaging its customers and communities in its resource-positive journey, by working with its farmers to create sustainable farming processes and offering customers new ways to enjoy locally-sourced and lower impact ingredients as part of their Starbucks Experience.

Coffee grounds are the top source of in-store food waste for Starbucks in Japan. By providing coffee grounds to the 28 farmers participating in the program, as well as using them to develop store furnishings such as art installations and trays, Starbucks will reduce coffee grounds waste by 50%.

Across the wider Asia Pacific region, Starbucks has also run a Coffee Grounds recycling program with farmers across South Korea since 2015, which produces a range of packaged food items that it sells in its stores. The company also runs the <a href="https://stories.starbucks.com/stories/2015/starbucks-coffee-grounds-for-the-garden/#:~:text=Starbucks%20started%20its%20Grounds%20for,ship%20espresso%20beans%20to%20stores.">Grounds for Your Garden</a> program across various markets around the world including the U.S., Indonesia, and many more, providing customers with used coffee grounds from stores to use as garden fertilizer.

In-store recycling and waste reduction

In a pilot project running this summer, Starbucks will launch a tumbler collection and recycling program, collecting used tumblers from customers across 500 stores nationwide. The recycled tumblers will be used to create new merchandise items, available in stores from 2022.

Starbucks will also launch a new food waste reduction program across all its stores nationwide. At the end of each day, customers will be able to purchase unsold fresh products about to expire at a discount.

Shifting from single-use to reusable cups

Starbucks will launch a Reusable Cup-Share program across select stores in the Marunouchi district of Tokyo. Customers will be served their beverage in a reusable cup and can return their cups at participating stores. Reusable cups will be collected, washed and sanitized by a third-party company.

The program will help create a culture of re-use on the go, by providing a convenient way for customers to reduce disposable cup usage within their immediate vicinity. It will provide valuable insights into how to scale the program across the market, as the company works towards its global goal of reducing waste by 50% by 2030.

The company continues to explore sustainable store design as part of its global efforts to reduce its environmental impact. It will open its Kokyo (Imperial Palace) Gaien Wadakura Fountain Park Store in Tokyo later this year. Designed using lower-impact materials, it will serve as a testbed for Starbucks Coffee Japan’s sustainability initiatives. In addition to its planet-positive initiatives, Starbucks Coffee Japan has also committed to creating opportunities for its partners (employees), with a focus on contributing to economic development in local communities through tailored career paths. This Earth Day, Starbucks invites customers to take simple actions that are good for the planet in their daily lifestyles. As part of its ‘GOOD GOOD’ movement, Starbucks will be rolling out a range of new sustainable packaging in its stores across the Chinese mainland, including coffee ground straws - the first major food and beverage retail chain in the market to do so at scale. Together with the launch of reusable for-here cold beverage cups and to-go wooden flatware, it marks the latest of Starbucks continuous efforts to reduce environmental impact at every stage of the coffee journey ‘from bean to cup’.

“Starbucks new sustainable packaging solutions make it easier for our partners (employees) and customers to make small contributions towards a better planet in their daily lives. Sustainable packaging is an extension of the Starbucks ‘GOOD GOOD’ movement, as we seek to invite everyone to eat good, feel good and do good. We firmly believe that the cumulative impact of our every action, however small, can add up to effect real change and make a positive difference to the environment,” said Leo Tsoi, senior vice president, chief operating officer and president, Starbucks China Retail.

Starbucks new coffee ground straws are made using coffee grounds and Poly Lactic Acid (PLA), and are 90 percent biodegradable within four months under standard conditions, far exceeding the six-month criteria under both national and international regulatory requirements. Apart from being eco-friendlier, the material is more compact and resilient compared to paper straws, which will be gradually phased out. Customers will be able to enjoy a superior experience as coffee ground straws are more suited for stirring, and can be soaked in beverages for longer periods without turning soft. They also enable smoother suction for customers consuming beverages containing fruit bits. Coffee ground straws were first piloted in selected stores in the market in February, and have received positive feedback from customers. Starting tomorrow, it will be launched in more than 850 Starbucks stores in Shanghai, before subsequent roll out to the rest of the Chinese mainland by the end of the year.

To be launched concurrently in Starbucks stores in Shanghai are specially designed reusable for-here cold beverage cups made from food contact resin, which customers can choose to replace single use plastic cups in-store. Developed by Starbucks China’s R&amp;D team, the new cup had undergone rigorous testing for durability, and is able to withstand over 1,000 times of thorough washing and sanitizing. It was first piloted in Guangzhou and Hainan province last December, and will be rolled out to the rest of the market by the end of the year.

In addition, all Starbucks stores in the Chinese mainland will introduce newly developed biodegradable wooden flatware for to-go consumption, replacing plastic cutlery which will be discontinued. Reusable serve ware will continue to be provided for all in-store consumption. The initiatives are estimated to eliminate a total of over 500 tons of plastic and 350 tons of waste per year when fully rolled out. On top of sustainable packaging innovations, Starbucks will continue to promote waste reduction by offering a 4RMB discount for customers who bring their own tumblers/cups.

The introduction of the latest sustainable packaging solutions comes a year after Starbucks first launched its ‘GOOD GOOD’ Movement inspiring Chinese customers to explore new lifestyles that are good for the planet, starting with the market-wide offering of a plant-based food and beverage menu in partnership with plant-based innovators Beyond Meat, Inc. and Oatly. The menu continues to be refreshed, most recently with the launch of two ‘GOOD GOOD’ limited time offer beverages in late March – the new Oatmilk Velvet Latte, and the return of seasonal favorite Berries Oatmilk Black Tea Macchiato.

Starbucks sustainability efforts are driven by its aspiration to become a resource positive company that gives more than it takes from the planet. The company has set science-based preliminary targets for 50 percent reductions of carbon, water and waste globally&nbsp;by 2030, and just last month announced a new goal to achieve Carbon Neutral Green Coffee and conserve water usage in green coffee processing by 50 percent by 2030.

Starbucks Coffee Company, the global roaster and retailer of specialty coffee, announced today it will invest approximately $130 million (USD) in China to open a state-of-the-art roasting facility in 2022 as part of its new Coffee Innovation Park (CIP). As Starbucks largest manufacturing investment outside of the U.S. and its first in Asia, the CIP will incorporate a roasting plant, warehouse and distribution center, creating highly-skilled jobs and new career opportunities that will further drive smart and sustainable coffee manufacturing in China. The plant will serve as a key component of the Company’s global roasting network, and the bold infrastructure investment further deepens Starbucks multi-decade commitment to strengthen the specialty coffee industry in China, where it aims to have 6,000 stores by 2022.

“Starbucks has spent the past 20 years sharing its passion for coffee across China and helping to build a leading industry that makes us all proud. The roasting facilities at the Coffee Innovation Park will set a blueprint for the future of coffee roasting and supply chain management, and further elevate China’s coffee industry, while supporting Starbucks growth in China, with China,” said Belinda Wong, chairman and chief executive officer, Starbucks China. “Starbucks has always taken a long-term view in China, and our commitment to the market has never been stronger.” 

Building on Starbucks sustainability announcement in January, the CIP will incorporate advancements in sustainable manufacturing, smart supply chain innovation, and technology to support the aspiration to deliver the most energy- and water-efficient roasting operations for Starbucks in the world, while minimizing waste. The new roasting plant facility will be designed with the intent to apply for U.S. Green Building Council LEED Platinum certification, as well as China’s Three Star Green Building standards.

Elevating Premium Coffee in China

From farm to cup, Starbucks has helped shape the specialty coffee industry in China through continued investment in training and infrastructure, including the opening of the Starbucks Yunnan Farmer Support Center in 2012 to provide open-source agronomy resources to coffee farmers throughout the region. The new CIP, wholly-owned and operated by Starbucks, will source coffees from China and around the world directly from origin for processing, roasting, packaging and distribution, for the first time in China. Construction of the CIP will begin later this year in the city of Kunshan, an hour from Shanghai.

Smart and Sustainable Manufacturing

With the CIP set to handle Starbucks largest roasting capacity outside the U.S., the investment highlights the Company’s ambition to further globalize its roasting network and reinforces Starbucks strategic focus on the U.S. and China as its two lead growth markets. Currently, Starbucks operates six other roasting facilities—one in Amsterdam to support European markets, and five in the U.S. The warehouse, roasting and distribution capabilities of the CIP will lay a strong foundation for continued business growth and development in China.

However, Starbucks vision extends far beyond roasting. Once in operation, the CIP will integrate green coffee bean warehouse management and processing, with plans to co-locate a highly-automated and ‘intelligent’ distribution center that will become the heart of Starbucks distribution network in China. The facility also will serve as a training ground for coffee roasters and key roles across Starbucks coffee supply chain in China.

The journey a coffee bean follows from farm to cup is an arduous one. It usually begins high in the hills of the Coffee Belt, a band that wraps around the Earth’s middle between the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn. Bucket by bucket, the beans are hand-picked and processed before trundling down winding roads to cargo ships destined for roasting plants and cafés around the world. 

To get the best beans, buyers from Starbucks have traveled to the source since the first store opened back in 1971. They journeyed to far-flung farms in places in Latin America, Asia and East Africa, taking time to get to know farmers and their communities along the way.&nbsp;&nbsp; 

When Starbucks launched its C.A.F.E. Practices sustainable sourcing program in 2004, the company knew that building on these personal relationships would be critical to the program’s success. It opened its first <a href="https://stories.starbucks.com/press/2018/starbucks-farmer-support-centers/">Farmer Support Center</a> that same year in San José, Costa Rica, and hired a team of agronomists to bring farmers into the program.

Carlos Mario Rodriguez, director and global head of coffee research and development for Starbucks, was part of that first Farmer Support Center agronomy team. He drove his pickup truck over countless miles of narrow roads to visit farmers and help them with a range of sustainability issues and ensure a long-term supply of quality coffee. He helped them set up their own test plots, showed them how to space trees correctly and offered suggestions to manage erosion and reduce the use of pesticides.&nbsp;

William Chacon, owner of the Café Las Peñas farm in Sabanilla, Costa Rica, has been working with Starbucks agronomists for more than 10 years, even when his farm is not selling to Starbucks. 

“There are many problems related to deforestation, and the coffee gets damaged by disease, and so the quality suffers too,” said Chacon. “With Starbucks help, we are producing new varieties of coffee. The quality is good because the leaves and the plants grow healthy.” 

In the Farmer Support Center's first year of operation, 43.5 million pounds of green (unroasted) coffee were purchased from C.A.F.E. Practices-approved suppliers, representing 14.5 percent of total coffee purchases. In the 15 years that followed, purchases under the program continued to grow and Starbucks expanded its global network of farmer support. A satellite location in Guatemala City opened in 2006, followed by Rwanda in 2009, Tanzania in 2011 and Colombia in 2012. Field by field, farm by farm – this new approach to sustainable sourcing was taking root.

In 2012, Starbucks opened its sixth Farmer Support Center, and first in Asia, in Yunnan, China’s Pu’er region. Alan Tong was the first agronomist at the <a href="https://stories.starbucks.com/stories/2017/yunnan-single-origin-coffee/">China Farmer Support Center</a>, starting with just 25 coffee growers.

Since then, he and his team have trained nearly 10,000 farmers in China in sustainable farming practices and 1,200 farms are now verified through C.A.F.E. Practices. They are also putting resources toward <a href="https://stories.starbucks.com/press/2018/starbucks-deepens-its-commitment-in-yunnan-communities/">creating pathways out of poverty in coffee farming communities</a> across the region.

After opening two more Farmer Support Centers in Ethiopia (2014) and Indonesia (2015), Starbucks’ oldest Farmer Support Center also became its newest. In 2016 the San José agronomy center moved from its downtown office building to a farm 15 miles up a mountain road to the foot of the Poàs Volcano. The 600-acre working farm and visitor’s center at <a href="https://stories.starbucks.com/stories/2018/coffee-sustainability/">Hacienda Alsacia</a> serves as Starbucks global agronomy research and development center.

“I can show [farmers] how we have been doing things,” said Victor Trejos, general manager of Hacienda Alsacia. “How we have been planting, how we fertilize, soil tests … and how they can do the same.” 

The farm includes 14 hectares dedicated to research. It’s a testing ground to push the boundaries of agronomy research to breed trees that are resistant to coffee leaf rust, or roya, which is ravaging coffee crops in Latin America. The team also analyzes soil, fine tunes pruning techniques, and supports farmers in other ways to increase coffee trees’ quality and productivity. Its findings aren’t kept in a company vault; they are shared freely with researchers and farmers everywhere.

Starbucks opened its tenth Farmer Support Center in <a href="https://stories.starbucks.com/press/2021/starbucks-opens-farmer-support-center-in-brazil-for-coffee-growing/">Brazil</a> in August 2021.&nbsp;To date, Starbucks has trained&nbsp;more than 200,000 farmers providing free access to education and resources through its Farmer Support Centers. Its aspiration is to&nbsp;<a href="https://stories.starbucks.com/stories/2015/making-coffee-the-worlds-first-sustainably-sourced-agriculture-product/">make coffee the world’s first sustainably sourced agricultural product</a>.

But for Rodriguez, the accomplishment is best measured one farm, one farmer at a time.

“To me, as a professional, as a partner, it’s the best part really when you start working with a particular farmer and see that they are improving their living conditions and being able to keep producing coffee as a good business,” he said. “That’s the best. It’s really something that motivates us.”

Starbucks announces latest progress and plans for sustainable coffee, served sustainably

Company will trial new greener cups in several markets worldwide in the coming year, roll out new strawless lids in the U.S. and Canada, and provide customers an opportunity to digitally trace their coffee’s journey from seed to cup

SEATTLE – Sipping your hot coffee from a paper cup that you can recycle or compost in your community. Enjoying a cold coffee beverage with a recyclable, strawless lid instead of a conventional plastic straw. And checking the Starbucks mobile app to see the journey of your packaged coffee beans as they were grown, processed, traded and roasted. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Starbucks leadership will unveil progress and plans on all these fronts at the <a href="https://stories.starbucks.com/stories/2019/coverage-of-starbucks-2019-annual-meeting-of-shareholders/">company’s annual meeting of shareholders</a>, noting that sustainable coffee, served sustainably is an area of particular passion for Starbucks and its more than 380,000 partners (employees) around the world.

“It was at our shareholders meeting one year ago that we launched multi-year initiatives around greener cups and digitally traceable coffee,” said Kevin Johnson, president and ceo of Starbucks. “Today thanks to many valuable collaborations, we’re seeing significant, tangible progress toward a greener future.”

Over the next year in several markets worldwide, the company will trial new, greener cups. Shareholders will hear the news today as they sip coffee from one of the cup technologies that will be trialed. Starbucks customers in New York, San Francisco, Seattle, Vancouver and London will help test a few different cups that will be both recyclable and compostable in those municipalities’ facilities. Starbucks will choose the cup technologies from <a href="https://stories.starbucks.com/press/2019/closed-loop-partners-announces-12-winners-of-the-nextgen-cup-challenge/">NextGen Cup Challenge winners</a> announced earlier this month, working with expertise and support from the <a href="https://www.nextgenconsortium.com/">NextGen Consortium</a>.&nbsp;

Starbucks initiated the Consortium last spring with Closed Loop Partners, and its mission includes identifying cup technologies that can be both recyclable and compostable on a global scale. In addition, the Consortium aims to leverage the scale of its powerful members and industry experts – which a year later include not only Starbucks but also another founding partner McDonald’s, along with supporting partners The Coca-Cola Company, Nestlé, Yum! Brands, Wendy’s and advisory partner the World Wildlife Fund – to work with municipalities to increase acceptance of these new paper cups in recycling and composting programs by showing their value and ability to be recovered and diverted from landfills. 

The Consortium’s work supports Starbucks many efforts to <a href="https://www.starbucks.com/responsibility/environment">minimize its environmental footprint</a>, which include a goal made in 2016 to double the recycled content, recyclability and the reusability of its cups by 2022.

“It is with great intention that we move forward with highly collaborative and innovative work to bring both recyclable and compostable cups to scale around the world,” Johnson said. “We are reimagining the future for Starbucks, and for the more than 30,000 communities we serve each day, with a great sense of responsibility for a more sustainable planet.” 

“We applaud Starbucks speed in committing to test NextGen winners that were identified less than a month ago, and the innovative collaboration at work here among so many global food and beverage companies,” said Kate Daly, Executive Director of the Center for the Circular Economy at Closed Loop Partners. “We look forward to continuing to build on this momentum, so that we can help recyclable and compostable options be the norm rather than the exception for to-go cups.”

Starbucks will roll out new lightweight, recyclable strawless lids to all stores in the United States and Canada in the next year. This is a key milestone as the company works to phase out plastic straws from its more than 30,000 stores worldwide by 2020, eliminating more than 1 billion straws a year – a goal that was <a href="https://stories.starbucks.com/stories/2018/starbucks-announces-environmental-milestone/">announced last July.</a>

Newly redesigned, lightweight recyclable strawless lids will roll out this summer to Starbucks locations in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, Washington, D.C., Indianapolis and Toronto, while the rest of the U.S. and Canada will receive them by early 2020. 

The new lids have 9% less plastic than the current lid and straw. Frappuccino® drinks and other blended beverages will continue to have a different, domed lid made from recyclable plastic and will be accompanied by a straw, except where local law prohibits it. Starbucks is testing alternative material straws for blended beverages and is exploring some of this month’s winning NextGen technologies that could apply to straws. (Plastic straws will continue to be available upon request for Starbucks customers who need or request them.) 

“We are pleased to see Starbucks exploring more ways to reduce its overall plastic footprint less than a year after first announcing its decision to phase out plastic straws,” said Susan Ruffo, managing director for international initiatives at Ocean Conservancy. “Redesigning products and packaging to be more sustainable is a long-term commitment, not a one-time decision, and Starbucks is clearly in for the long haul. We look forward to seeing how the company continues to do its part to fight ocean plastic and we hope others follow suit.”

“Starbucks is invested in developing solutions that seek to improve the sustainability of their products,” said Erin Simon, Director of Sustainability R&amp;D at World Wildlife Fund. “When companies begin to rethink their plastic footprint, innovation, research and measurement are the key elements needed to set them on a path toward continuous improvement.”

Starbucks will preview a feature for the Starbucks mobile app that shows its coffee beans' journey from bean to cup. Senior vice president of Global Coffee &amp; Tea Michelle Burns will unveil for shareholders a future feature for the Starbucks mobile app. The reveal will accompany an on-stage tasting of digitally traceable Starbucks Pike Place® Roast, the package of which, in the future app feature, can be scanned to see its journey &nbsp;from origin to the package.

As the audience will sip their Pike Place from one of the new greener cups the company will trial, they’ll learn that 80% of their cup’s coffee beans came from Colombia and 20% came from Brazil. They’ll see the beans are verified as 100% ethically and sustainably sourced; information about Starbucks responsible sourcing standards and open-source Farmer Support Center in Colombia; where the beans were roasted, (in Kent, Wash.); and brewing tips for a perfect cup.

Now one year into a two-year project to explore the benefits of digital traceability, Burns emphasizes Starbucks ambition of <a href="https://stories.starbucks.com/stories/2019/knowledge-is-valuable-coffee-journey-going-digital-for-customers-farmers/">greater empowerment for coffee farmers</a> as customers better understand where their coffee comes from and who grows it. Eventually, customers will be able to use the Starbucks mobile app to trace the journey of their Starbucks packaged coffee.

“We’re thrilled to be working with Starbucks and its suppliers on engaging coffee farmers in real, two-way dialogue on this topic,” said Bambi Semroc, Vice President of Sustainable Markets and Strategy for Conservation International, which is conducting farmer interviews in Costa Rica, Rwanda and Colombia for the project. “We are innovating to help connect coffee drinkers with coffee communities, with the goal to return more value to farmers by first listening to their stories, their knowledge and their needs.”

Costa Rican Coffee Institute (ICAFE) has also been focused on the importance of access to information in coffee farming communities. Xinia Chaves, Executive Director of ICAFE said, “We’ve learned in the past year that collecting and communicating transparent information throughout the entire coffee value chain of Café de Costa Rica has an enormous impact for all the actors that take part in it.”
