For the <a href="https://stories.starbucks.com/asia/stories/2021/starbucks-recognized-by-japans-pride-index-2021/">second year in a row</a>, Starbucks Japan has been recognized with a Gold ranking from the PRIDE Index 2022, the highest honor for companies promoting diversity and inclusion of the LGBTQIA+ community in Japan. Starbucks also recently announced that it has donated more than 5 million yen (approximately $35,000 USD) to local non-profit partner ReBit, to expand a popular diversity and inclusion program which visits schools across Japan.

The Rainbow School Project was created to raise awareness of gender diversity and LGBTQIA+ inclusion, and help schools provide secure and welcoming spaces for all students. According to a ReBit survey of more than 2,670 LGBTQIA+ youth in Japan, there is a 5.7 year gap between when young people first begin to seek information about their sexuality and gender identity (average age 12.5) and when they feel they actually received answers for the first time (average age 18.2). This period of confusion can be isolating and lonely, so the Rainbow School Project was designed to create an open dialogue between students, teachers and the community, to embrace and celebrate diversity.

"We are delighted to be working with Starbucks Coffee Japan on this project for the third year," said Mika Yakushi, representative director of ReBit. "We would like to express our sincere gratitude to all Starbucks customers whose purchases went towards this donation. We hope that through this project, our collective efforts to increase the number of inclusive schools will spread throughout Japan."

In addition to donations, Starbucks baristas have participated in the school visits, sharing their experiences and encouragement to young people and spreading a culture of warmth and belonging beyond Starbucks stores to the wider community.

On September 28, Starbucks will release a first-of-its-kind merchandise collection in collaboration with PEANUTS, one of the best-loved comic strips in the world. The limited-edition collection features beloved characters like Snoopy and his friends finding everyday happiness through the power of coffee and connection, and will be available in the Starbucks Japan online store while supplies last.

With a shared desire to create connections and feelings of belonging, Starbucks and PEANUTS developed new, never-before-seen designs that express a simple, yet powerful message: “Happiness is Connecting Together.” Backed by warm pastel colors, Snoopy and his friends try on the iconic Starbucks green apron, practice their coffee craft as baristas, and relax with a delicious Starbucks Frappuccino® blended beverage.

The collection will release in two parts on the Starbucks Japan online store, while supplies last. The first release on September 28 includes lifestyle accessories, tumblers, T-shirts, and caps. The second release on October 5 will include serve ware, stainless bottles and mugs.

Starbucks is excited to announce the launch of new seasonal cherry blossom beverages and merchandise, available February 15 for a limited time at stores in Japan. 

With delicate pink designs inspired by cherry blossom in full bloom, these delicious new offerings are the perfect treats to welcome spring. The Sakura Strawberry Shiratama Frappuccino® blended beverage features a dreamy blend of strawberries and cream with a topping of whipped cream, chewy rice flour dumplings and strawberry shaved chocolate topping. The Sakura Saita Milk Latte blends sweet and tart strawberry sauce with luscious steam milk, finished with handcrafted latte art of a cherry tree in full bloom. And while supplies last, customers can customize any beverage topped with foam or whipped cream with sakura latte art handcrafted by Starbucks baristas.

A gorgeous lineup of merchandise is available, inspired by the sense of beauty and ephemeral nature of cherry blossoms. Each piece captures different expressions of cherries in full bloom, with soft pinks and refined blues that evoke the spring sky.
