Brewing Time, Blending Generations: Starbucks Opens at Seoul’s Iconic Gwangjang Market

In one of Seoul’s most iconic traditional markets, Starbucks Korea has opened its newest Community Store, Starbucks Gwangjang Market. This vibrant new destination is more than a coffeehouse; it’s a celebration of Korea’s oldest traditional market and a tribute to over a century of its heritage.
A Coffeehouse Rooted in Heritage
Marking our 10th Community Store in Korea, the Gwangjang Market store brings the theme of “Brewing Time, Blending Generations” to life. Designed as a retro-inspired “Coffee General Store,” the space captures the market’s charm with vintage Korean signage, traditional storefront façades, and textile-inspired motifs.

A Commitment to Community
Every item sold at the Gwangjang Market store contributes to a greater cause with KRW 300 per item (approximately $0.22 USD) to be donated to support revitalization efforts within the local community. This initiative is part of a cooperative agreement signed with the Korean Commission for Corporate Partnership, Gwangjang Market Merchants Association, and Gwangjang Co., reinforcing a commitment to sustainable community growth.
“We hope this special Community Store becomes a platform for co-growth and revitalization of Gwangjang Market,” said Ryan Sohn, CEO of Starbucks Korea. “We will continue to introduce a variety of inclusive programs to support the local community.”

Three Floors of Discovery
Each level of the store offers a unique experience:
- 1st Floor – Coffee on the Go: Styled like a traditional market stall, this floor features a Cold Brew Bar featuring Nitro Cold Brew and a takeout counter.
- 2nd Floor – Artistic Heritage: An art gallery-like café space adorned with murals and installations co-created with local artists, inspired by the market’s fabric alleys and dynamic energy.
- 3rd Floor Rooftop – Retro Seoul: A picturesque rooftop framed by Korean-script signage and retro string lights—perfect for capturing memorable coffee moments.

Exclusive Flavors Inspired by the Market
To mark the opening, Starbucks is introducing a lineup of store-exclusive menu items that pay homage to Korea’s culinary traditions:
- Golden Mandarin Hop Fizzio – A refreshing citrus soda reminiscent of enjoying a chilled beer on the rooftop.
- Starbucks® Honey Hotteok Latte – Inspired by Korea’s beloved street snack ‘hotteok,’ will be newly launched at six special stores (Ewha, Daegu Jongro Gotaek, Kyungdong 1960, Ghana Art Park, Jangchung Lounge R, Gwangjang Market). It features the deep flavor of coffee blended with a subtle cinnamon aroma.
- Siru Honey Cake – Layers of brown sugar sponge made with black sugar and cocoa powder, and honey yogurt cream, modeled after traditional rice cakes.
- Pomokbo Strawberry Crepe, Threaded Baumkuchen, and Retro Bites – Menus inspired by the texture and color of fine traditional fabrics in South Korean culture and a collection of nostalgic local treats.
- Byuldabang Lager and select Starbucks cocktail beverages made with Byuldabang blend coffee.
