Starbucks and Jack Butcher Bring The Art of Conversation to Life in Hong Kong

During Hong Kong Art Week, amid the energy of Art Basel and the city’s cultural heartbeat, a simple invitation echoed across coffeehouses, galleries and heritage spaces: an invitation to pause, exchange and connect.

In collaboration with digital artist Jack Butcher, Starbucks brought The Art of Conversation to life through an interactive experience shaped by chance and human connection. From the show floor at Art Basel Hong Kong to the open air courtyards of Tai Kwun to select Starbucks® coffeehouses, the collaboration transformed everyday moments into opportunities to connect, reminding people that meaningful conversations often begin in the most unexpected ways.

A Conversation, Started by Chance

Across select Starbucks® coffeehouses and at Butcher’s participatory installation at the SILK Art House booth, guests received randomly assigned, limited-edition coasters marked with a dice pattern from one to six. The rules were simple. To complete a full set, guests had to talk—trading coasters, introducing themselves, sharing stories, and building connections with people they may not have otherwise met.

What began as a moment of chance quickly became a catalyst for connection. Once a complete set was assembled, guests could redeem it at Butcher’s booth for a single roll of the dice—an experience valued at US$88/HK$690 per roll. Each roll awarded a custom collectible set of single numbered dice matching the number rolled.

All 750 collectible dice sets were redeemed. But as Butcher emphasized, the true value of the experience lay not in the object itself but in the conversations and connections sparked along the way.

“Our coffeehouses are a third place, a space for people to connect, share ideas and create community,” said Nancy Lo, vice president, Product and Marketing, Starbucks Asia Pacific. “Through our collaboration with Jack Butcher at Art Basel Hong Kong, The Art of Conversation brought this belief to life, creating new spaces for genuine human connection within one of the world’s leading art fairs.”

An Evening of Art, Heritage and Espresso

The journey culminated at Art Basel’s Artists’ Night at Tai Kwun Prison Yard, a historic cultural landmark in Central. By invitation, artists, gallery owners and arts professionals gathered for an evening of performances, installations and late-night programming across the open air Prison Yard and surrounding venues.

Against the backdrop of heritage architecture and contemporary art, Starbucks and Jack Butcher brought The Art of Conversation into a new context—one that celebrated both Hong Kong’s past and its creative future.

Guests were delighted with an espresso martini inspired by Starbucks® signature coffee craft, offering a fresh twist on a classic evening cocktail. As conversations flowed and guests moved between sets and spaces, limited edition The Art of Conversation coasters were shared throughout the night—a small keepsake encouraging guests to carry the spirit of curiosity and connection into their everyday lives, long after the evening ended.

Jack Butcher and “Work, Luck, Play”

This activation formed part of Jack Butcher’s “Work, Luck, Play” installation at Art Basel 2026—three pieces exploring how effort, uncertainty, and human connection create meaning. “Work” moves from physical craft to digital abstraction, shown through four hands transitioning from detailed material labor to a pixelated cursor, capturing modern work’s shift to interface-driven gestures. “Luck” turns uncertainty into inevitability with six dice that cannot fail, collapsing chance into certainty. “Play”—as “The Art of Conversation”—invited guests to roll the dice, spark dialogue, and carry memories forward, forming a living experience where creativity brings people together.

A leading figure in experimental digital art, Butcher’s work has generated over $1 billion in secondary market sales, with exhibitions at Art Basel Miami Beach and Paris Photo, plus collaborations with cultural institutions and global brands. He has built a reputation for creating transparent, interactive art that invites participation and sparks conversation—perfectly embodied in this activation.
